Glen | 1 comments I just finished reading "Creation of Death" by Nora Roberts as J.D. Robb. It's an excellently written novel and has a tremendous plot and a lot of suspense. In the novel the author talks a lot about the Urban wars of New York in the early 20th century. I have studied a lot of history and I don't remember anything like that so I'm thinking it is just fiction built into the novel. That's my slant on it but it is an excellent book to read.

Vanessa (vanessamc) | 646 comments Hi Glen,

Yes the urban wars are fictional, at least at the moment. Let's hope it never comes true.

Sara ♥ (saranicole) | 1038 comments This book... Well, I'm sure glad they caught the guy! What a CRAZY CRAZY CRAZY guy! What did you think about how Eve had Roarke pull some strings at the end?

Oh, and I just read Salvation, and we get to see the cake Ariel bakes Eve (which she promises to do in this book! :)

Ooohhh! I had forgotten what she had Roarke do in the end. It forces you to really pay attention to Eve's guidelines/justifications for when you move that gray line.

This is a very tough story.

Vanessa (vanessamc) | 646 comments I am do to read this book next in my quest to read all of them in order. I'm stalling a little bit because it is so intense, but sooner or later, I'll miss my fix and will have to start it, exhausting or no. If I remember correctly one of the reasons I find it so tiring is that no one in this book gets any sleep and the "look how amazing Eve is," is a little overdone.

Vanessa (vanessamc) | 646 comments Well, I just started this one. I considered skipping it, but I must complete my quest. The first part is really troublesome, there's way too much time spent with the killer. Having Eve describe the crimes is bad enough, but I don't actually want to be there. Oh well, it's still an in death book, and I love them. I wonder if it would okay to skip just the parts with the killer- will I still be true to my goals? Sure, I tell myself, since I've listened to it twice already.

Sara ♥ (saranicole) | 1038 comments Fast forward. I have been... ;)

Vanessa (vanessamc) | 646 comments Thanks Sara, but I'm already 4 discs in. I have been skipping the killer parts and I probably will fast forward through some of the tedium. There are some interesting character explorations in the book, which I think Robb/Roberts was trying to focus on here, but it's a little overdone. I do appreciate some of them, though. They do help to build the characters, and that's mainly why I'm continuing. I love that part.

Sara ♥ (saranicole) | 1038 comments That's exactly what I do... skip through the killer parts and the gruesome descriptions of the db's... I listened to them once, and that was MORE than enough for me!

Vanessa (vanessamc) | 646 comments It's been a little slow going, but I am enjoying it more this time. There is some humor, some in depth detective work and some side benefits such as Trina almost being a victim. There's also a great scene where Eve spots a tail and then a kid causes an accident and she has to chase him down, and he bites her. I had forgotten about that little tidbit.

Vanessa (vanessamc) | 646 comments Well, I finally finished and I must say that I enjoyed it more this time. I skipped the disgusting moments with the killer (it's my 3rd time through and so I figured I could). Anyway, there were some side bits and some humor, a lot more than I remember. It only took me longer because I was listening to another at the same time. Well, onto Strangers!!

Karon (agmommy) | 182 comments Susan Erickson's voice for the killer was just way too creepy. I guess it gave me a deeper appreciation for how insane he was. No remorse, he saw the process of dying as beautiful. Sick! Yes, Eve & Roarke crossed the line at the end and boy did Eve cover her tracks on that. I'm so glad she did; that she made this thing right. The killer got his just desserts in this one...you don't see that happen very often.

I don't understand how, after 2 energy pills and a tranquilizer that Eve pulled out of unconsciousness. I would think it would do her in after no sleep! But oh how I loved her response to Ariel's question to the killer. Totally unexpected and "coherent!" Caught him totally off-guard. Awesome!

Dee Sauter (indeathaddict) | 1070 comments This is a book that was really gruesome. I really like how Eve saved Ariel, but I still think it would have been nice if Robert Lowell would have gotten a blast of cold water on him, or a swift kick (I realize Eve couldn't have allowed that one, but still...)

Question: Each one of the torture murders showed the characters of each of the victims. Would you give up or fight to live?

Karon (agmommy) | 182 comments This question was posed on a duplicate thread. My mind is still made up on that one....I'd give up and let death come like Gia Rossi did. The killer got "off" on the process of death so I wouldn't give him the satisfaction of torchering me until I croaked.

Vera M. | 446 comments Very intense book especially coming right after innocent in death. It is gruesome but kept me reading to see how they were going to get this guy!!!

I really liked the very end when eve and roarke stumble in the door and the summerset interaction. Ending with "... And now that the children are home.." So sweet!

Jonetta (ejaygirl) | 15057 comments Mod
I'd forgotten about that ending. Thanks for that reminder!

Chelsealuv Krigbaum it shows how much Summerset loves Eve. ;)

I just finished this book on my second time through the series, and I thought to check this message board to see if anyone else had the same thoughts I did -- so thanks Sara! :-) My opinion was always divided at the lines that Eve crossed at the end of the novel. On the one hand, of course you want the villian to get it (especially this one, he's the worst of all the books, in my opinion!) But at the same time, that was a BIG step over the line, especially for Eve who lives by the letter of the Law. So the question I pose is: should the defendant's rights and civil liberties been adhered to (regardless of how much much the situation sucked!) or do you feel Eve and Roarke were right to screw with him illegally?

Cast List (view spoiler)

There are no spoilers in the list. It's only set up this way because of its length and for easy reference.

Belles | 156 comments This was a great book. I like how this was personal for almost everyone on the police force. The strain and tension were almost palpable. I love what Eve had Roarke do at the end to ensure justice for all the victims.

Jonetta (ejaygirl) | 15057 comments Mod
That was truly poetic justice.
