SA Book & Challenge Lovers discussion

As the name implies this is a Challenge made up of everyone's input and ideas.

How it works?

Each person can choose 5 "reading goals" they want to add. But you can only list your 5 until Monday afternoon (19th). I will then put everything together and tada we have a new challenge :)

Still a little confused?

Just have a look at the type of things others nominate and you can jump right in.

This challenge will last one year and start on the 20th this month.

Oh and please try and make it do-able. Not something like "read 50 books starting with the letter S".
Try and keep it to 1 book per nomination if possible. Also please try not to nominate something tailored to your needs: Read 2 Dan Brown books etc.

Oh, now I understand! I thought you would have to choose one person's set of 6. Does this mean the challenge has 18 different steps so far (some of them with multiple books)? If I use my name for number 7, that already means reading 31 books, and others might add more.

Perhaps you could just pick 6 (or some other number) from the list? Or get a point for each one that you complete? Otherwise it could be very long.

My number 1: Read a book that's been on your shelf for a long time ("a long time" is relative, so just pick one of the unread books that's been on your shelf the longest).

I thought there might have been a misunderstanding :)

It does seem to be getting long lol. Maybe i should make it a year challenge?

The problem is that each step can have multiple books, and the list could get very long. Also, some people might not be able to do certain challenges. For example, I don't often read series, so it could be ages before I read 5 "next in series" books. Reading two books released in 2010 might not be do-able if you don't have access to a good library or don't buy new books.

If you pick a fixed number of steps to do, it'll be easier to complete the challenge by the end of the year. If you get a point for every step you complete, we can have rankings.

Oh, there's also a lot of crossover with some challenges. For example I could read Love Hurts, a 2010 publication by Lauren Lilac, a South African author. It's a genre I normally avoid, and it's random because I haven't heard of the title or author. Does that mean I've completed 8 steps, or do I have to pick just one?

How about this. We Renominate. 5 each. We try and keep each nomination to 1 book if possible (some might require reading another book etc).

I hazard a guess in saying only 6 of us will nominate. So 30 books + the few that can't be avoided.

We might not be able to finish it, but we can give it a hard try! :)

We can also have ratings :)

Oh and you can only use a book in one category!

That's a lot better, and ja, I don't think you'll end up with that many nominations.
I think a challenge is better if you have a decent chance of finishing though, or you can accumulate points (as with the Read Your Name challenge).

I'll leave my 6 as is, and just take out the series one, as that involves 2 books.

This is a lot like my Random Reading Goals in the reading goals folder, but I guess I can just add any of these to that :)

I guess it depends on how many steps there are. 10 or 15 books isn't too bad. More than that and I'd say make it a year.

Otherwise, I'm still in favour of a point system. It would also mean that there can be as many steps as you want, so you could extend the cut-off date and give more people a chance to add to the list.

Are there any rules for nomination? I think that the challenge should at least be applicable to anyone - something you can tailor to your own reading patterns. For example, don't make a Dan Brown challenge, or a sci fi challenge, because some people might not be interested in those things.

Im Loving this challenge, but I also think that it should be longer (a year perhaps) otherwise I don't think we would have enough time to get all the challenges done. It would also be very cool if we could make a score card that we could update as we go along just to make it interesting. My competetive nature is coming out :D

I hear what you are saying about the nominations being applicable to everyone. I'll keep a eye out, and at the end of the nominations if anyone thinks a nomination is too tailored and won't really work we can change it :)

Also just wondering about challenges like your number 5 challenge Lu - Read a book by an author who's name and surname starts with the same letter, example Rick Riordan. It's impossible to search for a book based on those criteria, so unless you already have something in mind, it could be really frustrating.

I was thinking about that too, I think when I post the final results I'll give a few suggestions by each one. And if anyone needs more help they can ask and we can pool our brains :)

We need to start thinking about the rules. For example can one book overlap and cover 2 challenges? I was thinking about reading The Book Thief which is narrated by death and set during the holocaust which would cover A book with an unusual narrator and learning something new ( about the holocaust) Or do we have to have 1 book per challenge?

I asked Lu about this a few posts above - she said one book can only be used for one challenge I'm afraid.

I was also thinking about completing multiple challenges in one fell swoop :)

Damn I should have read all the posts I was starting to get really creative with my list! :D

I'm a bit worried here. We only have 25 nominations. I would like to have atleast 30. Niecole, Emma you guys out there? This starts tomorrow and I just want everything set up by later tonight :(
