message 262: by Vanessa (new)

Vanessa (vanessamc) | 394 comments Wow, I haven't been on this thread in a while -- so many great books!

I'm currently reading Where's My Hero? by Lisa Kleypas and listening to two audio books. One is Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen , which I am enjoying, but would really like to strangle Mrs. Bennett. I've supplemented that great literary masterpiece with a Sharon McCone mystery, Wolf in the Shadows by Marcia Muller . I also started listening to The Neighbor (Detective D.D. Warren, #3) by Lisa Gardner , but probably will not continue until I've finished the Muller book.

Hi D.G., I just finished that one, what do you think of it?

message 264: by Melanie (new)

Melanie (melaina) | 1339 comments I'd never read Sandra Hill before: the whole Viking theme seemed a little over-the-top.. But I read The Last Viking (Viking II, #1) by Sandra Hill last night, and oh, it was so funny:-D A little cliched, what with the time travelling big macho hero from the past (but he has an obsession with the Home Improvement show!lol).. But it definitely worked for me:-) I'm giving it 5 stars for pure entertainement value, and am looking forwards to reading more SH!!

D.G. | 4477 comments Tammy wrote: "Hi D.G., I just finished that one, what do you think of it?"

So far I'm not impressed. Maybe it's because my last historical had a very similar premise: plain, plump (read: buxom), spinster conquests most desirable bachelor. Also the hero seems to be too much of a jerk.

But maybe I'll get better. I'm just 100 pgs. in.

message 266: by Rebecca (new)

Rebecca (bexsi) | 812 comments I finished Moon Called (Mercedes Thompson, #1) by Patricia Briggs Moon Called and it was actually Good once I got to the middle, I felt the beggining was slow (maybe thats not the right word, it was hard for me to get into.) I have started A Kiss of Shadows (Meredith Gentry, #1) by Laurell K. Hamilton A Kiss of Shadows.

Melanie (melaina) | 1339 comments Ick... I just read Susan Johnson's Sexy As Hell (Berkley Sensation) by Susan Johnson ... Please tell me her other books are better... This one is a 1* for me because the plot could have been great but...

****SPOILER****

The ass**** cheated on her! Not once, not twice, but over and over! And with two different women!!! And the worst????HE NEVER F***ING APOLOGIZES!!!!!!! No groveling, nothing! I get it. He has problems. He was in love with his now dead Indian girlfriend. Ok. But what kind of romance is this??? yeah, the sex was hot, but seriously? Oz never talks to Isolde about his past, and he's sooo convinced that she's cheating on him, that the baby isn't his.. And did I mention that he DOESN'T APOLOGIZE?????... AAAAArgh!!! What a terrible romance! I liked the first half ok, but after he first leaves her, I felt only disgust with the hero, and with that lily-livered heroine.. Seriously? She sleeps with him again while they're separated??? AAAAAAAAAArrrrgh!!!

***END SPOILER/RANT****

Please please tell me that her other books are better! I have a whole bunch of them and now I'm debating whether to give them away without having read them!

I used to read a lot of Susan Johnson's books when I was younger, and she was like a guilty pleasure for me. However, I only like her historicals. Somehow, I don't like her contemporaries at all, and her later works just feels flat.

Please tell me that her other books are better? Which was your favorite? I only have historicals:

Pure Sin by Susan Johnson Brazen by Susan Johnson A Touch of Sin by Susan Johnson Taboo (St. John-Duras, #3) by Susan Johnson Legendary Lover (St. John-Duras) by Susan Johnson Gorgeous As Sin by Susan Johnson To Please a Lady by Susan Johnson Force Of Nature by Susan Johnson

If any others have a unrepentant cheating hero, please oh please let me know! That'll teach me to buy the backlist of an author I've never read before!

LOL....Her heroes are pretty much man-sluts. It's like reading soft porn...LOL

I think I've read the first 5 books in your list. I like Brazen (that's part of the Braddock-Black series, which I thoroughly enjoyed). The St. John-Duras series is okay. I've tried reading Force of Nature a long time ago, but couldn't finish it. My favorite is her Russian (Kuzan) series. But its not PC at all...if you know what I mean.

message 274: by D.G. (last edited Oct 25, 2010 01:55PM) (new)

D.G. | 4477 comments I've only read a few books in the Braddock-Black and they were good but I think I stopped reading after book 3 or 4 becuase the heroes seemed all the same.

message 275: by Melanie (new)

Melanie (melaina) | 1339 comments Thank you Yz & DG! I guess I'll give her another try! AT least the ones you mentioned Yz:-) Lol.. btw I don't mind man-sluts as long as they restrain themselves to pre-heroine encounters, or at least as long as they do some serious groveling!!

No Julie. Of the five books, Devil in Winter was my least favorite.

message 277: by Julianna (new)

Julianna (authorjuliannad) | 1888 comments Drq, it's nice to not be alone and have someone else putting DIW at the bottom of the Wallflower list too, but I'm curious why you didn't care for it. I occasionally see others who agree that it was weak, but almost always for different reasons than mine. What makes me such an oddball is that I didn't like Sebastian much at all. Was it Sebastian that didn't do it for you or something else?

message 278: by Dee (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 7316 comments reading Confessions of a Jane Austen Addict by Laurie Viera Rigler - wasn't sure what I would think of it, but it isn't too bad...seems similar to the Lost in Austen series that was on BBC a few years ago (I never watched it but heard lots about it)...

Also reading Unmasqued An Erotic Novel of The Phantom of The Opera by Colette Gale - only a chapter or so in so far..

Melanie, I've read quite a few Susan Johnson awhile ago so I don't remember every one but I know I really liked Wicked (St. John-Duras, #2) by Susan Johnson and Gorgeous As Sin by Susan Johnson . The H in Wicked is just that, very wicked but all ends well and I just felt drawn to that story. Gorgeous as Sin is lighter, less angst and a great couple if I remember correctly- I gave that one a high rating so I must have loved it at the time.

@Fran: I know, they're hilarious! I think one of my fave quotes was [talking about the hero's job]: "Danger can make any job sexy. Except proctology. Dangerous proctology makes us all want to curl up in a tiny ball and cry" LOL
