Jonathan Lopez | 4726 comments Most of the South fries it, Sarah. There's no shortening in the batter since you're cooking it in oil:

Have you ever been to Sylvia's in NYC? They serve southern fried cornbread. It's the only place I've ever had it. It's great.

message 52: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 13814 comments I've probably had fried cornbread and didn't even know it. I've had some good southern breakfasts.

Michele bookloverforever (lovebooks14) | 1970 comments I didn't know that Omega 3 in large doses is really good for the brain. I take it because it's good for arthritis, bursitis: it reduces the irritants in the blood and tissue surrounding the joints. But a recent study showed it could prevent neural decay and encourage neural growth. Also, did not know that walking a few steps backwards each day makes the brain grow/move in different ways.

Michele, please be careful--Omega-3 MAY have positive side effects, but it may also have negative side effects. In addition, because the FDA doesn't regulate the contents of supplements, just the claims, you don't know what's actually in those.

Michele bookloverforever (lovebooks14) | 1970 comments mine are fish oil. my doctor said 3000 milligrams ok. I am also trying the walk backwards a few steps thing. My doctor has me on 1200 milligrams of calcium and 2000 milligrams vit.D. I use melatonin to help me sleep.

Michele bookloverforever (lovebooks14) | 1970 comments question: does cod liver oil have omega 3? It does not say so on the label, list of ingredients.

I don't know about cod liver oil, but flaxseed meal is a good source of omega 3. I sprinkle a couple of spoonfuls on my cereal.

Brittomart I didn't know that the average height for American adult males is 5ft 9in. I thought it was at least 6ft

message 59: by [deleted user] (new)

There you go Bun. It depends on the category you fit into. It doesn't have an over all average for the USA.

message 60: by janine (new)

janine | 7709 comments i come from the second tallest country on that list and i am above average. just.

Michele bookloverforever (lovebooks14) | 1970 comments avweage height for women used to be 5'4". for men it used to be 5'10".

message 62: by RandomAnthony (new)

RandomAnthony | 14536 comments The "rook" part comes from the Dutch verb "roken," to smoke. It's a smoked sausage.

The first syllable of the word rookwurst is pronounced like Al Roker's last name (which means "smoker" in Dutch), not like a rook on a chess board.

I am extremely disappointed in some of you for letting a post with "smoked sausage", "to smoke", and "Al Roker" pass without exuberant juvenile commentary.

...and also a misspelling. It's rookworst, not rookwurst. I too hang my head in shame.

No wait...
What's a lignan?

message 67: by Félix (new)

Félix (habitseven) Yayboowhat?

message 68: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 13814 comments Lignans. Bun said that I'm eating lots of them in my flaxseed meal, but I need her to tell me if that's a good thing or a bad thing. Do I need to get this looked at?

message 69: by Félix (new)

Félix (habitseven) Good word.

message 70: by Lori (new)

Lori Probably a very good thing, Sarah, since flaxseed is so healthy!

For those taking Omega supplements, make sure the balance between 3 and 6 is good, in this modern day our bodies are out of whack with too much 6 and there's belief this contributes to so many "epidemics" these days: depression, obesity, flammatory diseases, etc.

Brittomart I didn't know that Alan Alda was on M*A*S*H

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) Did he do something other than MASH? That's all I know him for.

Félix (habitseven) He played the senior senator who ran against Jed B.

message 86: by Lori (new)

Lori I just got him confused with Alan Arkin. Whom I've loved ever since the 60s The Russians Are Coming!

I didn't like Mash either.

message 87: by Félix (new)

Félix (habitseven) Alan Arkin was genius in that movie with Steve what's his name from Office. The one with the little girl and the VW bus. Oh crap I have no more memory.

message 88: by Brittomart (new)

Brittomart Little Miss Sunshine, Larry?

He most deservedly won an Oscar for that.

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) M*A*S*H* ranks right up there with Hee Haw and Lawrence Welk in terms of shows that my parents watched which made me want to gouge my eyes out.

I didn't know that "trayf" means not kosher. Weirdly, I came across it twice today.

message 98: by Sarah (last edited Dec 02, 2010 08:54AM) (new)

Sarah | 13814 comments It does!
My childhood dog's best trick was that you would put food in front of her and tell her it was treyf, and she'd wait patiently til you said "kosher," at which point she would gobble it down.
