Ann (annabell123) So my aunt told me today that she wants a kindle. I just want to know what is the best ereader out there, because I have been looking at the nook also. And it looks like nook has an app for my android phone, which I intend to use. But I don't know that I would buy an ereader for myself and then pay for the books because I use the library so often. So, what ereader do you have and are all of the books over $10?

message 2: by Barbara (new)

Barbara I have the kindle and love it
if I don't buy directly from author I buy from amazon

If you use the library a lot the nook will be great
For you. You can download books to the nook from
The library. I think up to 10 books for 14 days once thew 14
Are up books from library disappear from your nook and a lot of other sites

Best buy has both, you can play around with to see
Which one you like better

message 3: by Ann (new)

Ann (annabell123) So is there a library on the barnes and noble website, or should my local library offer books for the nook?

message 4: by Danielle (new)

Danielle (Smiley1881) I love my Kindle! I don't know anything about borrowing from the library because my library doesn't offer these services but I know Kindle is soon going to have a lending feature and the Kindle is ranked the #1 e-reader.

message 5: by Barbara (new)

Barbara Barnes and noble is where you can purchase ebooks
For the nook and they also offer free ebooks. You have to
Check daily or whenever you want to see what free
For the day , same with the kindle.

Local librarys allow you to download to the nook
Its the libaries that have digital ebooks its a website
That will tell you. I don't remember the site but
Will try to get from my friend , she has a nook
And gets most of her books downloaded from library

message 6: by Ann (new)

Ann (annabell123) I just checked that website, and my library does not have ebooks. So maybe I will wait until the kindle has a lending feature.

message 7: by Barbara (new)

Barbara The library borrowing is only for the nook

I love my kindle and wouldn't trade it for anything

Even pdf file books that authors send to me to review
I can move to my kindle

message 8: by Barbara (new)

Barbara Kindle soon will be allowing kindle users to lend books to another kindle user

message 9: by Ann (new)

Ann (annabell123) Oh I see, well I will keep checking around. I may be able to get ebooks from another library. That is what I am checking into now.

message 10: by Barbara (new)

Barbara Here is the website to use for the nook and dlownloading
Ebooks

www.overdrive.com

message 11: by Ann (new)

Ann (annabell123) Thank you so much! I will definitely consider buying one now.

message 12: by Alisha (new)

Alisha (schalazeal) | 13 comments The use of e-libraries is such a great consideration to make. It opens up a whole new resource! :o) I'll note that the Kindle is (currently) the one exception with regard to e-library accesibility. Most other major devices (Nook, Sony readers, Kobo reader, iPad...) allow for this, either directly to the device or via cabled file transfer.

message 13: by Taye (new)

Taye (taye06) | 1 comments Thanks Nook4Beth for the link to the library. I have a Nook and an iPad, and I absolutely love my Nook (named Jericho). Having the ability to download ebooks from a library saved me a lot of money. Overdrive is supposed to come out with an app that will enable ipad to download books from overdrive.

I love the name of your nook and idea behind it, very appropriate. :)

I have an iPad and couldn't be happier! I have all the eReader apps on it: nook, Kindle, Kobo, Bluefire, Stanza, so on. So, I'm able to grab books where ever I can find 'um. It's like having all those eReaders bundled into one, plus all the other great benefits of an iPad.

My vote is for an iPad, but really depends on what you're looking for. Hope Santa's good to everyone! *<|:)

message 15: by Danielle (new)

Danielle (Smiley1881) So are you guys saying that the Kindle can't borrow books from these places but the Nook can?

message 16: by Danielle (new)

Danielle (Smiley1881) @ Steph, The ipads do look really awesome if you want to send me one for the holidays. =) hehe

Wish I could, hun. Hopefully Santa'll be good to ya this year! :)

Brodie wrote: "I have the Sony E Reader. I hate that it has no back lighting. I know - battery life but more often than not I will read on my computer because I can't see unless the room is very well lit."

Brodie, that's absolutely the reason I never bought an eReader and stuck with my iTouch/Phone until I got the iPad. I prefer to read my eBooks in bed at night vs. PB/HB b/c there's no page turning noise (what little there is) or book light to keep my snoozin' hubby awake. No other eReader offers a back light, from what I've found. These iGadgets work great for that.

There's no need to worry about eye strain as you can dim the screen (at least with my fave eReader, Stanza, you can) and/or switch to "night mode" with a darker background/lighter text. (In fact, you can completely modify the background and text colors with Stanza.) All of these options make night reading very easy for me and my eyes. :)

message 18: by Ann (new)

Ann (annabell123) Well, for right now I have an android phone, so I now have the nook app, but I don't think I will want to read on it much. Maybe when I am out and about it would be really nice.

message 19: by Danielle (new)

Danielle (Smiley1881) I didn't know that you could adjust the back lighting to night mode. That's great because that's one of the major reasons I bought a Kindle because I didn't want eyestrain.

message 20: by [deleted user] (new)

Nook4Beth, from what I've heard, you can read PDF files on Kindle as well. Maybe I'm wrong though.

message 21: by Jane (PS), Moderator (new)

Jane (PS) | 24334 comments I have just purchased yesterday the new Sony PRS650. I bought this 'cos I was sick of being restricted to my computer to read the ebooks I had purchased. I hope I don't end up with your issue Brodie!! :)

But I purchased the Sony 650 'cos there were no restrictions on where I purchased my ebooks (I was not limited to B&N or Amazon) and I can download from my library via Overdrive and play mp3 and AAC audio as well... It also handles the 'flow' on pdf files better than the Kobo (supposedly).

Ann: there is a Sony Touch Edition thread in Admin if you want to read up on the Sony...

When I checked out the cost of books, I was disappointed at how expensive books were with Amazon and the main retailers. I can buy paperbacks free freighted from Book Depository for less than some of the Amazon ebooks... I plan to buy my ebooks from Books on Board, Book Depository, Fictionwise etc. And of course, the library...

I don't know if that option is available on the Kindle. I was mainly speaking of Stanza - a diff eReader program I use most often on my iGadgets. (You can download it here: www.lexcycle.com)

Nook4Beth wrote: "I want to get the iPad to replace my laptop...."

You can do just about everything on an iPad that you can do on a laptop. But, right now at least, there's no hard drive. So, you cannot store anything on the iPad, unless you have an iApp that'll store/read the file. Example: VLC has an iApp that allows you to store/view video files. Stanza/Bluefire eReader have iApps that allows you to store/read eBooks. Dropbox has an iApp that allows you to store/view PDFs and just about any type of file.

Hope that makes sense.

message 23: by Gigi (new)

Gigi | 1149 comments I love that Text-to-Speech feature. Its great when I'm some place where reading my kindle wouldn't be convenient. However, I will admit that its a little annoying that I can't borrow any downloadable media from the library website though. If you get a Kindle make sure you get the Kindle that offers 3G, in addition to Wi-Fi.

message 24: by Steph (new)

Steph (angel4492) | 386 comments No worries. :) It's a great addition to a laptop/computer and perfect for full screen web browsing, etc. LOVE mine! Wasn't convinced initially, but my SIL had one. After being able to check hers out, test run some apps, etc, I fell in love.

I try not to look at what Apple's newer/upcoming releases of iGadgets I already have will include b/c they're always smaller, faster, better and I get whiny. LOL! Things in the electronic world change too fast - you can never have "the best" for too long these days. I have a webcam on my laptop, thought I think I've only used it twice with Skype, so that wouldn't hold me back from buying and enjoying the iPad now. :)

Hope you enjoy it, if you get one!

message 25: by Ann (new)

Ann (annabell123) Man now I think I really need one of these! I think my dad is planning on getting a car starter for me for Christmas...which would be nice because I live in Minnesota. However, right now I am willing to go outside to start my car in 30 below temps if I could just have a NOOK instead! lol

message 26: by Hina (new)

Hina (hinaj) | 2581 comments I am sorry, but I just had to post. I bought the ipad and its definitely worth its money and my most used app is the kindle. I just love it, but additionally the ipad allows me to do so much more, I have literally everything on the Ipad from organizer, to do list, my notes, finances that I can't survive now without it being with me and all the books I can read on my commute is awesome!!

message 27: by Dee (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 7316 comments Jane - too late now, but you aren't limited to just B&N or Amazon if you buy a nook or kindle...you just can't buy from Amazon and put on a Nook or vice versa...probably about 50% of my stuff comes from other retailers (fictionwise; all romance ebooks; samhein; ellora's cave) etc

Dang it all - it is all so confusing!! :) Oh well. I'm sure the Sony will still be pretty good... On the plus side, Sony and Kobo are the 'big' ereaders in Australia as far as sales and support, being sold at all the major book and department stores.

I'm going to read my first book on it today... :)

message 29: by Dee (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 7316 comments good luck!!

just wanted to point it out - My mom is in Australia and I got her a kindle for christmas last year and its linked to my account in the US, so she just grabbed books that I have already bought to read or grabs the free ones

message 30: by Jane (PS), Moderator (new)

Jane (PS) | 24334 comments That's a good system! Trouble is, none of my friends or family read my sort of books... (I think...)

My mother only likes autobiographies... I just can't see her wanting to read my books!! :)

message 31: by Dee (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 7316 comments i'm lucky - my mom introduced me to romances at a young age (11) and erotic romance at 15...what more could a teen ask for? ;)

message 32: by Jane (PS), Moderator (new)

Jane (PS) | 24334 comments Hahaha! Buckley's chance for me!!!

Some of my nieces read romance but I'm wary what I put in front of them!! As it is, I'm not sure my sister approves of the ones I have let them read...! (Try to keep the fruity factor down...)

Christine (Cagnes) (cagnes) | 118 comments I have a Kindle 2 & love it! The dictionary is one of my favorite features & I tend to use it often, since it's so quick & easy to use.

If you're interested in a super fast dictionary, good search & highlighting features the Kindle is the one to go with. Here's a comparison video just before the new Kindle was released...

message 34: by D.G. (new)

D.G. | 4477 comments I'm planning to get a Nook too, mostly because I can borrow from the library and lend to others. My preference would be to the get the Nook Color because it's backlit but I never like to get anything first generation (I'm sure in less than a year they'll come up with a better version) and also because it weights almost 1 lb with only 8 hrs. of battery life. So my plan is to the get the cheaper Nook now and get a Nook Color in their 2nd or 3rd generation later.

message 35: by Brenda (new)

Brenda My (wonderful) husband bought me a Nook yesterday. I LOVE IT!!! I don't know how I was ever without one. It was a toss up with the Kindle, but I was told the Kindle didn't allow to add pdf's or epub files... is that true? Also, I love the touch screen feature. I didn't get the new "color" version of the Nook, but it WILL be on my wishlist next year. :)

message 36: by Dee (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 7316 comments you can use pdf's on the kindle natively, but they don't always format well - i normally convert them - but it doesn't accept epub - according to Bezos at the most recent shareholder's mtg - by using epub, there are additional licensing fees, plus in order to push out updates, they have to go to the epub people first which adds in a delay, whereas right now they can just update kindles as needed via the wireless

message 37: by Brenda (new)

Brenda Oh I see. I've added a bunch of pdf's the my Nook, and so far the formatting looks the same as the book I bought on the B&N site. Hopefully it continues that way. I know how electronics can deceive sometimes, lol. :)

message 38: by Dee (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 7316 comments i think the nook and the sony actually reflow pdf's whereas the kindle it is more of a fixed image - but don't know for sure...I have a kindle, but rarely use the PDF - unless a book isn't available in mobi from a publisher - then i'll get like .lit or .epub and convert

message 39: by Brenda (new)

Brenda I returned my Nook yesterday in exchange for the new Nook Color. It's really nice! I haven't had any problems so far, and the lit screen doesn't seem to bother my eyes when reading for long periods of time (there's a brighness adjustment.) I have to admit, the original Nook had a more realistic look for the book pages (looked just like paper), but the color covers & magazine feature on this one is REALLY a plus. It feels really comfortable holding, and flipping pages. I can also store 1000's of photos on it to take wherever I go. It has wi-fi and is almost like having a mini-laptop - all touch screen. I can even keep up with groups/notifications on Goodreads with it. :)

message 40: by Ann (new)

Ann (annabell123) So I totally have to share this....I don't have a nook yet, but I do have it on my android phone. I was searching on amazon and barnes and noble for a couple of books that are new releases, but my library doesn't have yet. The one book was $2.39 and the other was free! I am sooo excited! I am also signing up now for those websites that Nook4Beth talked about. I am so going to buy one of these when tax money comes in!

message 41: by Shary (new)

Shary Im in love with my Kobo. Good price and easy to use.... Wireless.

I love it...

message 42: by Brenda (new)

Brenda I almost bought the Kobo... So far I'm happy with the Nook. I think I'm just happy to have an e-reader. lol.

message 43: by Ann (Noumena12) (new)

Ann (Noumena12) (noumena12) | 150 comments My Kindle is my preferred reading device. I LOVE the e-ink. But I supplement it by reading on my Droid or iTouch when necessary.

message 44: by Ashley (new)

Ashley (ashleylaura87) | 444 comments Well I started my ereading on the Kindle app for my iPhone. I loved being able to read while my bf was sleeping. Minimal light, didn't bother me much, and very compact so I can read without it feeling too heavy.
Then, I bought an iPad. I'll admit, I haven't read on it much, because there are just so many other things you can do on it. But the times I have used it, I used the Kindle app.
Then, my brother bought me a Kindle 3 for my birthday. And, I'll admit I'm hooked. He helped me load a ton of content on it and now I don't have to bring 10+ books with me when I travel! :)

I'll admit I'm a gadget girl...I love having these devices! They all have there own "best" features.

If I would have bought an ereader for myself, I was leaning more towards the Nook, but now that I have the Kindle, I am very happy with it.

message 45: by Brenda (new)

Brenda Ashley, I have the Nook Color and VERY happy with it (it's amazing!) but, I'd love to get a Kindle too just to be able to try it out and also have something with a better battery life when I'm on the road/traveling/etc. The battery life on my Nook isn't the greatest. I have noticed if I turn wi-fi off, it lasts closer to the 8 hour mark that they claim. But, with the wi-fi on, and heavy use, I'm lucky to get 4-5 hours. The Kindle is favored by most, so you have a GREAT e-reader. :)

message 46: by Phillip (new)

Phillip Duck (PhillipThomasDuck) | 11 comments I received a Kindle for Christmas!! I absolutely love it! It changed my life, and no I'm not exaggerating LOL. Totally serious! I never understood how Kindle owners would go on and on about how much they love them, until I received mine.
