Still reading Curse of the Mistwraith by Janny Wurts and will move on the Ships of Merior next. Of course I'll read this months QR selections too.

Nancy | 2838 comments I've just started Dennis Lehane's Gone, Baby, Gone. It's the fourth book in a great series. I'm behind on our group reads and hope to catch up soon, though these next 8 weeks will be very busy for me with two classes.

Debbie (amdial) | 116 comments I'm in the last 200 pages of The Historian by Elizabeth Kostova The Historian by Elizabeth Kostova. It's a fantastic book, if I had the time I would have sat down and read the whole thing right away. Next up Gorilla, My Love by Toni Cade Bambara Gorilla, My Love by Toni Cade Bambara, For colored girls who have considered suicide/When the rainbow is enuf by Ntozake Shange For colored girls who have considered suicide/When the rainbow is enuf by Ntozake Shange, then finally Maurice by E.M. Forster Maurice by E.M. Forster. All of them are different group reads, I'm trying to catch up!

Debbie (amdial) | 116 comments I forgot The Shadow of the Wind by Carlos Ruiz Zafón The Shadow of the Wind by Carlos Ruiz Zafón. Gorilla, My Love hasn't come in as expected so Shadow moves up the list. I finished The Historian and for colored girls who have considered suicide/when the rainbow is enuf, both of which blew me away for completely different reasons.

Tom | 95 comments I'm at the end of Billy Bathgate by EL Doctorow, which is really, really well-written. Wow is he a good writer! But I just put that down since against all odds of it not coming in for another 6 months due to demand, my reserved library copy of The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet's Nest by Stieg Larsson came in! Just cracked that open last night and am looking forward to finishing up Lisbeth's journey!

I finished the 1st book of the epic fantasy series Wars of Light and Shadow by Janny Wurts and am beginning the second, Ships of Merior. This is the best epic fantasy I've read in decades. Janny's being very involved on GR is a great plus. I have never before had such easy access to an author.

I'm also about half way through Probation one of next months selections for QR. The book has an interesting, clever, if cynical style. And, I have not a clue of what its denouement will be.

Nancy | 2838 comments Kernos, Janny is very active on Beyond Reality.

I'd like to try one of her stories, but have no idea where to start. Any suggestions?

Here is a list of her books: http://www.goodreads.com/author/list/...

I learned about Janny from the Empire Trilogy which she wrote with Raymond Feist. It is actually the 2nd trilogy in the Riftwar Cycle by Feist and one should really read it before Empire. I really like Feist too and have read Empire 3 or 4 times. Wurts reminds me of CJ Cherryh in her depth of character and complexity of plot.

The only other book of hers I have read is Mistwraith. For pure Wurts, I would suggest starting with this if you like long adult epic fantasy series. It has recently been republished as mass market PBs and eBooks. She does have a couple of shorter trilogies and some stand-alones, but I have not read them yet.

She is a good example of how GR has changed my reading. Before GR, and being distant from bookstores, the SFBC was my major source of books. Riftwar was carried by the club, War of Light an Shadow was not. So, I had never heard of the latter. And, likely without Janny's participation in GR I would not have been so eager to start it.

QR is similar. Before QR, I rarely read a queer-related book and was unfamiliar with the modern repertoire, since the late '70s.

I am currently reading Salt by Adam Roberts which is supposedly a SF, but after 50 pages, seems more a political primer.

Next up will be The Carnivorous Lamb, and then Janny's Fugitive Prince. What comes next will depend on how I feel.
