What's the Name of That Book??? discussion

This was a short story about a tree, perhaps a giant oak or redwood, and the story about it's life. One chapter was a forest fire that scarred his trunk, then the final chapter was a man saving him from being cut down. The only character in this story is the tree itself. I remember first reading it in about grade 5 or 6 in one of the school readers. Any help would be very appreciated.

I'm almost sure I know this book but I just checked the "tree" books on my shelves and I don't think I see it, but it sure sounds familiar. Hope somebody knows!

It was in a school reader, and one of the other short stories was Farley Mowat's Owls in the Family..that much I remember..but for the life of me, that title of the one about the tree simply eludes me.

OK, this is probably not right, but is it Shel Silverstein's The Giving Tree?

no thats not it. This would be about a grade 6 level reading.

Hans Christian Anderson has a story about the life of a tree, but the plot is very different than what you describe.

I remember it too. Unfortunately, I don't remember the title either!
