Jane (PS) | 24334 comments Here is where we ask questions, discuss, and make suggestions for the challenge.

Special thanks to the members who regularly stop by at the Suggestions Thread and share their input. I relied heavily on the suggestions - hope you approve of my selections!

1. April: Read a book which title or author’s name starts with “A”.

2. Birthday: Read a book from an April B-day celebrant’s GR bookshelf whose “day” falls on the same “day” as yours. If no one has the exact same day, then go for the closest date. (http://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/2...)

3. Geography: Read a book whose author, setting or character is from Maryland.

4. Fourth Month: Read a book that is fourth in a series, or has four words in the title.

5. The Royal Wedding: Read a book with a royal character, a book centring on a wedding or a book with a predominantly blue cover.

6. April Fool's Day: Read a book from the fifth or seventh category of either the February or March Monthly Reading Challenge.

7. Find-A-Rainbow Day: Read an LGBT book, a book with at least 3 of the 7 colours of a rainbow (violet, indigo, blue, green, yellow, orange, red) on it's cover, or a book with a title that includes the word: dream/s, wish/es, or rainbow.

8. Taxes are due in US (15 April): Read a book with an accountant/book-keeper character, or due to a shortage of funds, read a free or borrowed (library, friend etc) book.

9. Pets Are Wonderful month (nodding also to Pet Owners Day, World Rat Day and National Hairball Awareness Day): Read a book with a character that owns a pet or has an animal on the cover.

10. Reader's Choice

Challenge Duration: April 1 – April 30, 2011

Penney (pschoener) | 3553 comments Dee I still have Faith and Fidelity on my TBR from one of the PIFM recs you gave me. Now is a great time to finally get to it :)

Dee (austhokie) | 7316 comments i love it because its classed as an LGBT, but they don't actually completely hook up until the third book in the series - but its still a really sweet romance

~KarenH~ | 11359 comments Just to make the Geography challenge really easy - Nora Roberts is from Maryland.

Laura Lulu (lauralulu) A GLBT UF series that is supposed to be really good--I'm reading the 1st one still this month, so I'm excited #2 will fit for April. :)

PsyCop Series

message 12: by Jane (PS), Moderator (new)

Jane (PS) | 24334 comments Looks interesting - thanks Laura Lulu. :)

Diane, FYI, all the old challenge posts are moved to a folder toward the bottom of the topics page. :)

Lynne (lovetoreadgal) | 1182 comments Hi Jane, this post doesn't have anything to do with the April Challenge, but I wanted to let you know that I finally finished "If Angels Burn" and that ironing scene is horrific. Yikes!! The book kept me off balance with the great intelligence and smart-mouth of the doctor and her story vs. all the brutality and violence. Still trying to decide how much I liked it.

message 18: by Jane (PS), Moderator (new)

Jane (PS) | 24334 comments LOL Lynne!!!!

I really liked the story but, yes, that ironing scene! Yik, cringe and OWWWWWWW!!!! Strangely I haven't read any more of the series. But I think I still want to - more of matter of getting through ALL my current TBR books. :)

I think I might want to read more of the series too, but it's not at the top of my pile. I'll let you know if I run across any more intriguing torture scenes, if you'll think of me the same way...

message 20: by Jane (PS), Moderator (new)

Jane (PS) | 24334 comments LOL - noice! Nothing like a good torture scene - not! :)

message 21: by Lindy (new)

Lindy (lindylee) | 260 comments Are there an authors or books set in Iowa????? For April I woudl have thought Alabama or Arizona

Lindy

message 22: by Fran, Moderator (new)

Fran | 12279 comments It's Maryland this month, though not sure why. Nora Roberts, Mary Jo Putney, Kathy Love

message 23: by Lindy (new)

Lindy (lindylee) | 260 comments Did i look at 2010? Maryland is an improvement

message 24: by Dee (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 7316 comments i think the way Yz does it, is that she goes down the list of members of the group and where people are from in order and that place is the place of the month

message 25: by Fran, Moderator (new)

Fran | 12279 comments Thanks Dee, that's an interesting way to do it- I like it.

message 26: by Melanie (new)

Melanie (melaina) | 1339 comments Interesting, yes.. Let's just hope Yz'll skip me, lol .. But maybe by then I'll be in the US..

message 27: by Jane (PS), Moderator (new)

Jane (PS) | 24334 comments Not too many suitable authors in Switzerland?? But the story could be based in Switzerland. I recall a Mills & Boon from the early 80s being set over there... Could probably even remember the author if I could be bothered... :)

message 28: by Sandra (new)

Sandra | 4260 comments I seem to remember a pink cover, she was a teacher, there was snow, she had to rescue the obnoxious girl student, I think his name had something to do with Falcons or was that the mountain. LOL.

Am I close Jane?

message 29: by Jane (PS), Moderator (new)

Jane (PS) | 24334 comments LOL! There must be 2 books from the eighties!!

The book I'm thinking of had an English heroine who was a brunette (book cover red). She had a bet with some friends that she could get some playboy to propose (or something). To do this, she had to get into a disguise (put on a blonde wig) and then place herself in his way on the ski-fields in St Moritz or somewhere like that... (All the friends went over with her.)

OK - I'm off to see if I can find the author. I'll give myself 10mins...

message 30: by Jane (PS), Moderator (new)

Jane (PS) | 24334 comments Found it!! My memory was a little faulty on storyline, but this is it:- The Ice Maiden by Sally Wentworth. Mine was another edition, probably from 1980 - I'm sure the cover was red!! :)

message 31: by Sandra (new)

Sandra | 4260 comments Classic!

Definitely not the same one I'm thinking of, so you're right there must be 2 set in Switzerland. For the life of me I can't think who wrote the one I'm thinking of, and surprisingly it's not on my shelf.

message 32: by Melanie (new)

Melanie (melaina) | 1339 comments Lol.. Jane & Sandra, I'm impressed:-) Ramuz is a Swiss author, I think you might have a Alex Ryder (YA) book set there, and maybe a Ludlum? As far as romance, can't think of anything:-D

message 33: by Jane (PS), Moderator (new)

Jane (PS) | 24334 comments *blushing* Thanks. But I can't take all the credit. I couldn't remember the author's name so I looked (and found) a Harlequin group on GR (thanks to Lady Danielle) and in their 'vintage' (or some word like that) thread, one of the members had listed this book as worth reading! What's the chance?? (As soon as I saw the author's name, I knew I had struck gold - her books were generally pretty good.)

Perhaps you should give the Harlequin group a go for inspiration Sandra (If it is frustrating you...)

message 34: by Sandra (new)

Sandra | 4260 comments Thanks Jane, I'll have to go check them out. I haven't listed all my old Harlequins, still got bags of them down in my shed. I periodically grab a bag & go through them before passing them on.

Also Trevanian wrote about Switzerland I think.

Jim son of Jim (formerly PhotoJim) (jim_formerly_photojim) | 5294 comments Can I use Swap for my 'Four' book? It has four letters. It is about four people. They do a lot of 'four'nicating.

What do you think?

*edit - the sole purpose of this post is to use the fornicating pun. I actually plan on using it in the A category.

message 36: by Jane (PS), Moderator (new)

Jane (PS) | 24334 comments ROFLMAO!!! I'm guessing there is also a bit of 'four'play? Now I have to go check that book out ;)

...It had occurred to me that if this trend continued, that letters in a single word may need to be incorporated...

Jim son of Jim (formerly PhotoJim) (jim_formerly_photojim) | 5294 comments Certainly there is 'four'play. And she does this trick with his 'four'skin. Talk about being best friends 'four'ever.

Shannon Carly (shannibal) | 141 comments Just a question...I was planning on participating this month and had selected my challange books awhile ago. I've read a few now already, but I just realized I never posted my list or progress. Is it too late now to post since I've read some of the books already? I feel like such a moron!!! lol :)

message 39: by Debbie (new)

Debbie (db_debber) | 2757 comments Not to late at all Shannon, just go to the Monthly Challenge thread and post your list including what you have read.

message 40: by Shannon Carly (new)
