Sarah | 13814 comments Jennifer Garner will apparently play the young, sexy Miss Marple. Not a joke.

http://www.avclub.com/articles/oh-for...

Jackie "the Librarian" | 8991 comments Well, that's just silly! Miss Marple is supposed to be a deceptively sweet, woolly old lady who has observed people for years and so knows character, and the propensity for murder, when she sees it.

How is the young and lovely Miss Garner appropriate for this particular role?

message 3: by Jim (new)

Jim | 6484 comments Extremely odd choice. I agree Barb, Hollywood's obsession with youth is past credible. Diane Lane would have made a much more age appropriate choice, but must not have the box office appeal of a Jennifer Garner.

Also Diane Lane can act, Jennifer Garner, not so much. . .

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) Seriously? Marple always struck me as older. I am also opposed to this choice.

Even with the age consideration, Diane Lane is sexier anyway, regardless of age.

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) I think Scarlett is pretty in a very classic way, but I'm not all over it like most people are.

We all know that I just can't find SJP attractive.

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) I'll just sit and stare at my Rachel Weisz instead...

Jim | 6484 comments There are just so many choices that could have been. It seems they are putting themselves behind the 8 ball to start out.

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) You should see the rabid fans who are upset over Katherine Heigl being cast as Stephanie Plum for the book series being made into a movie.

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) I do agree though. Poor casting choice.

message 11: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 13814 comments Marple is supposed to be older. They went with a what-if of "what would she have been like as a younger woman?" while ignoring the part about her wisdom coming from experience.
It's Disney deciding Marple needs an origin story to show where she got her wisdom.
I kind of can't stand Jennifer Garner. She's so glowingly pretty I feel like I have to squint to look at her. Her face makes me uncomfortable. That movie with Ricky Gervais and the lying kind of rubbed it in.

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) To be fair, I do think she's pretty when she smiles that very big smile of hers. Her smile is absolutely stunning. The rest of the time, her features look a bit awkward, as if not everything fits on her face correctly if that makes sense.

I have nothing against her though. Just not sure how she fits this particular role.

Well I was going to go with Helen Mirren, but thought you could probably make Diane Lane look a little older, and maybe Miss Marple could have been a younger looking older lady since I wasn't quite sure of her age.

message 14: by Jim (new)

Jim | 6484 comments Either way Jennifer Garner seems like an odd choice.

message 15: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 13814 comments I think it may be Jennifer Garner's own production company pitching it, so she may have decided she wants to play her and that's that.

Interestingly, according to something else I read, Angela Lansbury was just 59 when she first played Miss Marple.

message 16: by Jim (new)

Jim | 6484 comments BunWat wrote: "I'm not sure I'd ever buy Helen Mirren as dithery and ineffectual even if she was supposed to be faking."

Good point.

Jackie "the Librarian" | 8991 comments Yeah, no, not Helen Mirren. Or Judy Dench.
How about that actress who is Emma Thompson's mom, in real life. She's Nurse Pomfrey in the Harry Potter movies, she played Bridget Jones' mom, and she was the mother in Sense and Sensibility, too.

Gemma something...
Gemma Jones.

Jackie "the Librarian" | 8991 comments Oh! And! By the way, Jennifer Garner is NOT ENGLISH.
Stupid, stupid idea...

message 19: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 13814 comments Well yes, there's that too. Maybe she only became English with age.

message 20: by Félix (new)

Félix (habitseven) I think JG is from WV.

message 22: by Rebecca (new)

Rebecca White (rebecca_white) | 1027 comments Jennifer Garner was perfect in Juno. I think she's one of those people who responds to a good role. But no, not Miss Marple.

What's next, Justin Bieber to play Hercule Poirot?

Jackie "the Librarian" | 8991 comments I want to see Justin Bieber just TRY to grow that mustache!
I know, he's not Belgian, either. :)

Except Christian Bale likes to give interviews in the accent of the movie he's promoting. So he was speaking American English when he did the interviews for Batman. That's part of why his British accent sounded so strange when he switched movies and started using it again. And why does he sound almost Cockney? I always expect a more genteel accent.

Yeah, he does a perfect American accent.

Obama's American accent is not half bad, for a Kenyan.

Oh yeah! I forgot about that. They were married in the home of Wilma Mankiller. And sadly, Mr. Bale died 3 years later.

You know who does a really bad American accent, is Jeremy Northam.

(Jeremy Northam, NOT Kevin Costner!)

Heidi (heidihooo) | 10825 comments BunWat wrote: "But Miss Marple isn't supposed to be sexy."

I know... I was responding more to your mention of age appropriateness, mixed with everyone else's requirement of sexiness. Frankly, I think Maggie Smith would be a perfect Ms. Marple.

ms.petra (mspetra) Stacia learned how to read last week wrote: "You should see the rabid fans who are upset over Katherine Heigl being cast as Stephanie Plum for the book series being made into a movie."

I always envisioned Sandra Bullock as Stephanie and Queen Latifah as Lula!

ms.petra (mspetra) This is the Jen I actually love! However, I have to agree with Bun on Geraldine McEwan as Ms. Marple. PERFECT!

I liked Julia McKinzie's Miss Marple better than Geraldine McEwen's.

I don't think I saw Sliding Doors but it was lame in Emma. It killed me to see her in that role because Jeremy Northam was so perfect for George Knightley.

I didn't like the 1996 version of Emma at all. Toni Collette as Harriet Smith was poorly cast as well.

I don't think I saw the Kate Beckinsale Emma. I saw the Romola Garai one, which was okay. Jonny Lee Miller (the former Mr. Angelina Jolie) was decent as Knightley but I had the impression he was shorter than Romola.

Are we missing any Emmas?

message 48: by Jammies (new)

Jammies Misha, Joan Hixon will always be my perfect Miss Marple too!

I'd love to see Joan Plowright as "Miss Marple."

message 50: by Jammies (new)

Jammies Heidi, that says a lot about Ms. Hayes, since she only played the character twice!
