We have cleaned everything up in the buddy reads section and the BOTM section. Things were getting a bit cluttered. Let us start anew for buddy reads in 2017 - you let me know what book and I will put up the thread for you and we will schedule it and then you can lead the discussion. We will help you put together your reading schedule and then you are good to go. Send Bentley a PM.

Michael (michaelbl) | 407 comments Getting ready for a trip to India. Will not be starting on any new theme reads or buddy reads until I am back. Bentley for a while it was looking like I might have an overnight lay over in NYC, but now just a couple hours to kill at JFK airport.

Michael I just saw your note - how was your trip?

message 19: by Michael (new)

Michael (michaelbl) | 407 comments It was excellent. We covered a lot of territory across northern India. We were in country about 3 weeks, so was ready to come home when we got to the end. Even took my first ride on an elephant.

Bentley | 44291 comments Mod
I did that in Singapore - one uncomfortable bumpy bony feeling ride (lol).

Where did you go in Northern India?

message 21: by Michael (new)

Michael (michaelbl) | 407 comments Well we flew into New Delhi then for various lengths of time to Dharamsala (Visited the Dali Lama's compound; and a friend there has a café with great wood fired pizza), back to New Delhi, Nagaland next specificall Changtongya (near border with Myanmar), Siliguri, Gangtok in province of Sikkim (Near
November 6,2017 Gangtok, Sikkim (Near Nepal), Alipurdura, Makrapara (near Bhutan) and here stayed in Jungle hotel (where we rode the elephant) and Kolkota. These are most the places we visited not necessarily in order.

At one point it looked like I might have an overnight layover at JFK and gave serious thought to seeing if you would have time for a coffee and book discussion. :-) I ended up with only a couple of hours of layover in New York.

The Dalai Lama's compound sounded interesting. The other places sounded terrific as well. What a trip - was it for business or pleasure or both?

I would have loved to meet up with you in NYC if I was around - but it sounds like you had a tight flight and layover schedule.

message 23: by Michael (new)

Michael (michaelbl) | 407 comments The compound is very interesting and there is a small museum there that shows the history of their escape from Tibet. I also had the chance to visit Mother Theresa's tomb and convent. She is a hero of the poor and is was an honor to be able to visit her home. The trip was basically to visit some friends and sightsee I did do a little bit of small business consulting informally with a couple of friends there that want to start businesses. Couldn't do anything too formal because I was on a tourist visa.

Yeah my travel agent managed to shorten my lay overs. Sometime when I am transiting through New York I plan to take some time and see at least something of the city.

I may be going back to Sikkim and Nepal in 2019 but have to see what the funds look like.

message 24: by Lindsay (new)

Lindsay I'd like to join the read for A Higher Loyalty , please.

Hello Michael,

I am glad you decided to visit India. Was this your first Indian trip? I am asking this because I was surprised when I read the names of places you had visited. You visited the north and north-east areas. Generally, most of the foreigners visit Delhi-Jaipur-Agra (also called the golden triangle) but you boldly chose to visit the lesser known northeastern states like Nagaland & Sikkim. Even I, as an Indian haven't ever been there. How was your experience? I am sure you may have been surprised at the diversity and difference of cultures between different states like Delhi and Nagaland etc.

Hello, Rohit, this was my second visit to India. On the first trip we spent quite a lot of time in Delhi and saw many of the sites there which are fascinating. India has a very rich and diverse history. This trip was based on visiting with friends in various areas and even making some new friends. I very much enjoy the northern part of India but I probably do not fit the typical tourist mode. I always come back with tons of pictures. I am also always open to suggestions for the next trip. I still want to do the "tea train" trip and perhaps a regular passenger rail trip across India.
