D.G. | 4477 comments I'm going to check the sites just to see the pronunciation.

I keep pronouncing Neveah as 'Nivea'.

message 652: by D.G. (new)

D.G. | 4477 comments I know it says in that site that the pronunciation is different but that's such a new name that there could be several different ways to pronounce each name and they could be interchangeable. That's why I propose to use Nevaeh for Neveah.

message 653: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 1103 comments I checked on both sites that are linked on the front. The 2 different spellings aren't listed at all on 1 site and pronounced differently at another.

But I'm ok with them counting as the same because then I can use the book I had originally planned to use.

message 654: by Hayley (new)

Hayley (mrsjohnson1985) I thought in the list of names it was Nevaeh not Neveah? I've never even heard of Neveah. I have Nevaeh because it's Heaven spelled backwards...

message 655: by Hayley (new)

Hayley (mrsjohnson1985) And thanks D.G., I appreciate your help with the William look-up. I thought it did say William in the first book but wasn't sure.

message 656: by Jane (PS), Moderator (new)

Jane (PS) | 24334 comments The list is Nevaeh, so unless Yz was dyslexic when she typed it out, then the name isn't well enough known to appear on both the pronounciation links.

In this one special instance, I will allow either spelling to count toward marking the name off :)

...Off to note this in the FAQs...

message 657: by D.G. (new)

D.G. | 4477 comments Thanks Jane!

Not that I have any hopes of getting that marked up...at least, unless it shows up in a book I'm already planning to read. I promise when I join not to read a book because of a name! :)

message 658: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 1103 comments yay! Although that Relentless book looks good too.

message 659: by Jane (PS), Moderator (new)

Jane (PS) | 24334 comments Me too DG.

Once a week I think back on my books and try to recall the names used in the book(s)... My list is haphazard at best! I'm definitely reading as I like and then marking off the names that I can remember! (And it is so much harder with audiobooks 'cos I'm driving as I listen - can't write anything down... safely... :)

message 660: by Courtney (new)

Courtney K (cklueh) | 510 comments I'm doing so bad with this challenge. I read Young Adult Paranormal and Fantasy books. Most of the names are strange or made-up by the author.

message 661: by Jane (PS), Moderator (last edited Jun 08, 2011 05:41PM) (new)

Jane (PS) | 24334 comments Sci-fi rom and steam punk doesn't help either - trust me :)

I suspect erotica is the most productive category if the book meets the page requirement ;)

message 662: by Hayley (new)

Hayley (mrsjohnson1985) Question: Both sites that were given in the FAQ cannot pronounce "Halleigh". I googled it and it does say it's a variant of Hayley. I would pronounce it ~Hey Lee~ but I want to make sure it's okay to use this name for the name given in the challenge for "Hailey".

message 663: by Dee (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 7316 comments I lost my paper that had my names on it!! fuck fuck fuckity fuck!! ;) lol!

message 664: by Hayley (last edited Jun 08, 2011 06:51PM) (new)

Hayley (mrsjohnson1985) Ooh don't you hate that Dee lol.

message 665: by Dee (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 7316 comments I don't remember half the names in books i'd read and i've returned them to the library...hopefully its just under the bed or something

message 666: by Hayley (new)

Hayley (mrsjohnson1985) I have a horrible memory. If I didn't write down the names that I come across I would forget them all...

message 667: by Jane (PS), Moderator (new)

Jane (PS) | 24334 comments A bit of internet surfing and I think the intention on this name is to pronounce it like Halle Berry's first name. Charlene Harris notes it on her community board as being pronounced as HAL-lee.

Sorry Hayley - it might be a variant, but I don't think the pronounciation is the same :(

message 668: by Hayley (new)

Hayley (mrsjohnson1985) Awh poo...... Oh well I tried lol. Looks like so far I'm only getting 1 name out of this book *sigh*. Thanks for researching Jane. I just saw it was a variant and got excited. I'm like hmmm well it could be pronounced like my name or Halle...

message 669: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 1103 comments I'm sure I've missed names in audiobooks. I've caught a couple. But I'm not going to crash or pull the car over to write a name down that I think is on the list. Then I forget by the time I get home.

message 670: by D.G. (new)

D.G. | 4477 comments I listen to audiobooks in the subway mostly (or at work, LOL!) so if I hear a name, I have time to write it down.

Oh Dee! Did you have all the names in there? I've been updating my list as soon as I start a book.

message 671: by D.G. (last edited Jun 09, 2011 04:13AM) (new)

D.G. | 4477 comments Ladies - Have you used Google Books to search names?

Google Books has previews of most books and those include usually a good chunk of the book. There's a search function and all you have to do is search the name. It's not foul proof of course because if the pages where a particular character shows up are not in the preview, then it won't find the name but I was able to double check like 15 names in the 56 hr. audiobook I was listening. That's how I confirmed Bill's name for Hayley too.

message 672: by Lisa Kay (new)

Lisa Kay (lisakayalicemaria) | 1885 comments Thanks for the info, D.G.! I'll have to check it out.

Yes, I can see where that would be a problem. I just read a YA Fantasy and there wasn't one name in it; not even close. Enjoyed the book, though! :)

message 674: by Dee (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 7316 comments I was just writing down names on a piece of paper by my bed...because that's what I read quite a bit - and my computer is in the other room

message 675: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 1103 comments I've been using the search feature on Amazon for some books.

message 676: by Katharina (new)

Katharina | 802 comments I just got lucky with a book I've been reading for another challenge. My first book that lets me check off 4 names. :)

2 of them (Henry and Isabel) are mostly referred to by their titles but their first names are mentioned a few times. A couple women called the guy "Oh Henry" when they were alone with him. ;) And then on the last few pages of the book one character's real name is revealed as Molly. Plus Adrian is the H.

There is also a Lucy in the book but her role is very minor. Now I'm off to mark the names in the spreadsheet.

message 677: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 1103 comments Right now I'm mostly reading books I want to read and marking off names as I get them. But I like having at least one possible book option for each name. So if I get every name filled in but the few that I don't actually own a book for-I can try to get those too.
I've lucked out on a few that had 3 or 4 names. I could have marked of Sam like 10 x's now. Same with Elizabeth, Ellie and Sarah.

message 678: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 1103 comments I still have no idea of a book for a female Addison. I guess I won't be able to get them all in afterall unless I come across one by accident.

message 679: by Lisa Kay (new)

Lisa Kay (lisakayalicemaria) | 1885 comments Female Addison:
Reaper (Soul Screamers, #3.5) by Rachel Vincent My Soul to Keep (Soul Screamers, #3) by Rachel Vincent Meddling with a Millionaire (Harlequin Desire) by Cat Schield Journey into the Realm The Elf Girl by Markelle Grabo Grey's Anatomy Overheard at the Emerald City Bar / Notes from the Nurses' Station by Chris Van Dusen

message 680: by Daffodil (new)

Daffodil (daffodil--ripcranberry) | 1058 comments Woohoo! I read Sweet Possession (Sweet, #5) by Maya Banks a couple days ago and managed to knock a couple of the harder male names off the list.

Connor Malone is the main male lead. But, Nathan Tucker, Grayson "Gray" Montgomery (McNab rule) and Micah Hudson put in various appearances.

message 681: by D.G. (new)

D.G. | 4477 comments I have #3 in that series...I'll have to see if I find some of the names there!

message 682: by Daffodil (new)

Daffodil (daffodil--ripcranberry) | 1058 comments I almost forgot:

Cattleman's Choice by Diana Palmer has a Carson.

message 683: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 1103 comments I have Sweet Posession I think. I have a couple of those anyway.

message 684: by Dee (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 7316 comments I have all the sweet books...I just don't know if I can fit them into any of my challenges right now...lol!

message 685: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 1103 comments I'm such an idiot. I have an Addison book afterall. I was just looking at my audiobooks to see what I want to listen to next that had a challenge name in the description and I have: Wit's End and there's an Addison right on the descripton. It's the main characters Aunt.

message 686: by Lisa Kay (new)

Lisa Kay (lisakayalicemaria) | 1885 comments Mary wrote: "I'm such an idiot. I have an Addison book afterall..."

LOL! I did that with Reagan. I just knew I had read that name recently. Then, when I gave up, I picked up a book I was meaning to read - and there she was! :)

(These names have, at times, driven me a little crazy. But then I let go. I don't want to read a book just for the name, but when I see one that applies, I get all excited!)

message 687: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 1103 comments I don't want to read a book just for the name, but when I see one that applies, I get all excited

That's me. I don't intend on going out of my way to get one that I'm missing. But I want at least one possible title for each name-just incase my library has it and I fill all the other names.

message 688: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 1103 comments OK I think this falls under the Dead Character rule, but I'm asking anyway: I'm reading a book in which a house is haunted. The hero and hereoine keep like hearing voices and even dream about the people who died in the house 100 years ago. In the dreams and visios they talk (and even have sex). Can I use these two "ghosts"? They are both on the list.

message 689: by Jane (PS), Moderator (new)

Jane (PS) | 24334 comments Sounds pretty right to me Mary. Go ahead and use them ;)

message 690: by Tania (last edited Jun 10, 2011 05:16PM) (new)

Tania | 644 comments I just heard back from Lauren Dane - Ben in Laid Bare is a Ben not a Benjamin. But she says that Ben Stoner from Wolf Unbound is a Benjamin.

I'll update the names sheet.

message 691: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 1103 comments I got a lot of names in the last 2 days. My daughter is spending the weekend with my parents.

There's an Aubrey in Inner Harbor by Nora Roberts BTW. It's a child. There's also a Stella, Cameron, Grace, Anna and Ethan.

message 692: by ~Megan~ (new)

~Megan~ (megadee) Aubrey is all grown-up and plays a big part in the next book, Chesapeake Blue. I wouldn't mind re-reading these books!

Great, Mary, thanks! I've read the first in that series (and used some of the names) and they have all of them on audio at my library. Wonderful!

message 694: by Lisa Kay (last edited Jun 11, 2011 09:15PM) (new)

Lisa Kay (lisakayalicemaria) | 1885 comments Aaaahhhhhhgggh! I'm reading A Game of Thrones; there are 328 characters in this book and I can only use one! (There are more that apply to this challenge; however, I have already used them.)

message 695: by Dina (new)

Dina (missdina) | 807 comments LOL, Lisa Kay! Did you count all the characters in that book?!

message 696: by Lisa Kay (new)

Lisa Kay (lisakayalicemaria) | 1885 comments LMAO! Nope. I can be obsessive, but not that obsessive! That is what is posted on shelfari!

message 697: by D.G. (new)

D.G. | 4477 comments I noticed that a few people were using Alina for Alana but those names don't sound at all the same to me. I also checked the pronunciation sites and they are pronounced differently so I know it's not me...can I have a ruling on this one, Jane? :)

I'm not Jane, but those two names don't sound the same to me, D.G.

message 699: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 1103 comments I noticed that too and was too chicken to mention it here. Not that I'm monitoring what people use-more like looking to see if a book I have fits names that I don't know it does. I've found a few books I own already that I had no idea had names I could use.

So I was just checking some ebooks that I put on CDs to see if they worked on my laptop (before I dismantle my ancient desk top).

Anyway I found: Obsession which apprently has a Sebastian, Devin and Caleb. Since I have no memory of this book, I might reread it for this. It may have more, those are just the 3 that I noticed right away.

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 1103 comments Oh and Trigon Rituals has an Alea which could possible be used for Aaliyah?

I don't plan using this for that name because I came across Aaliyah as a name in a book by a favorite author of mine. (found by seeing what others are using btw) But thought I'd mention it here.
