~KarenH~ | 11350 comments Thanks, Jane and Sandra! I figured they were too short to stand alone, but they're even shorter than I was estimating. I'm sure it won't be a problem to read all three ;) and since the short story at the end is the only one I'm sure at this point has a name in it that I can use, I'll definitely be tacking it on.

Thanks again!

Sandra the wonderful green sandal' has looked up these books for you Karen - the first three are novellas of between 55 - 85 pages. You noted the last one is the shortest (Sandra said it is self-published). Use the novella ruling - at least 3 novellas (add the fourth if there is a name you need) in a series with a max of 4 names marked off for the bundle. Enjoy :)

Amazon does have Wild, but for those of us who read ebooks, it's much cheaper to buy the two stories, Golden Eyes and Amber Eyes separately - a little over $7 for the two vs. almost $11 for the paperback version of Wild.

message 755: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 1103 comments I got it for like $7 at Borders with the coupon and free shipping.

I'm almost disappointed with how much I am liking Kiss of Midnight (Midnight Breed, #1) by Lara Adrian . Because the last thing I need is another series to collect.

~Megan~ (megadee) Oh man, I love that series, Mary!!

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 1103 comments I got it on audio from the library.

But I don't think I want the rest in audio. I tend to prefer romances in print. At least ones with sex in them.

That is my pronounciation for the names as well :)

I just finished reading that as well, Mary - it was great!

My 'create your own challenge' this year has all these first in series books that I had collected over the last couple of years but not started - I'm more than half way through the list and am now hooked on another 3 or 4 series! *sigh* :)

message 763: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 1103 comments Ugh I gave myself a spoiler on the series. But I'll still stick with it.

I haven't ready anything tonight. I share a duplex with my sister. She had a bunch of friends over and I was outside with them.

My problem is when someone wants to catch a lift with me home (eg brother in law) - I have to pick another book 'cos I refuse to listen to anything spicy with him!! :) ...The drive is 6 hours - how hard is that to forgo a good book and listen to something more mainstream - esp if you are in the middle of the book??!!

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 1103 comments All the YA I read is audiobooks with my daughter. Right now we are listening to Shiver.

I'm in the office by myself most of the day on Fridays. So I listen on my IPOD. Anyway-major sex scene while I'm unlockign doors and turning off the alarm.

Although the sex in the Midnight Breed book aren't super graphic (so far-only on disc 4). I mean they're graphic but it's not like straight erotica. I could not do a Lora Leigh book on audio. I did one of the BDB books on audio and many of the Carpathian books on audio.

message 770: by D.G. (new)

D.G. | 4477 comments Sex scenes on audio bring forth my inner teenage girl. I'd giggle a lot!

I can't imagine listening erotica on audio either and my library has tons of those. Maybe I should give one a try to LMAO.

message 771: by Jane (PS), Moderator (new)

Jane (PS) | 24334 comments I have a few Carpathians on audio (my preference is to read them) - whilst I love these books, the sex scenes are interminable: I tune out for quite of bit of them.

I don't know how I would handle straight erotica on audio - my library certainly doesn't have them so I guess I'll never find out...

Let us know DG - I'll have to live vicariously through you :)

Dee (austhokie) | 7316 comments here's a question - what is someone is using another name to hide who they really are? In One Foot in the Grave - he introduces himself as Liam at the very beginning, but she quickly figures out his real name (which i've already marked off)...not sure how much more of a role he is going to play, but can I use the name he is hiding under, if he ends up being more than a one-stop wonder?

message 774: by Jane (PS), Moderator (last edited Jun 17, 2011 05:22PM) (new)

Jane (PS) | 24334 comments Of course! ;) ...In the meantime, I'm going to double check for LLeigh at my library *grins* ...I have to admit to being rather intrigued...

As I thought: nope - not there :(

I was considering that earlier this month Dee when I read that book. I decided I couldn't use it. He changes back to William pretty quickly and once we know he is William, then he isn't Liam... Make sense?

...He is only referred to as Liam in the very beginning...

message 777: by Dee (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 7316 comments but wasn't his name Ian...not william...I've only read a couple of chapters - but I already have an Ian (and its not mcnabb!)

message 778: by Jane (PS), Moderator (new)

Jane (PS) | 24334 comments From my rulings:If a character has changed their first name, which name can be marked off?
Either name may be used for the tournament - ie their birth name or their 'new' (deed-poll etc) name may be used to mark off a name on the list. They have clearly been known by both names during their life.

Hmmm - now I'm starting to wonder about this again...

Dee wrote: 'but wasn't his name Ian...not william...'

No - I don't want jump ahead of the storyline for you. His original name was William, but he has more recently been known as Liam, and other than that beginning section he reverts to William. Once you have read a bit more, let me know what you think...

message 779: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 1103 comments I used Anthony for a character that was a Drag Queen and going by the name Ms. Dread. It's revealed in the book that his name is really Anthony.

I'm going to use Henri for Henry. I looked it up on the pronouncenames site and it lists en-hri and hen-hree as possible pronunciations for both. Henri is the 1st name of one of the bad guys (Foulard) in Destiny by Alex Archer.

message 780: by Dee (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 7316 comments because of the other rulings you made is that as long as they were referred that name at least once...even if something else was used the rest of the time - it could count ;) (just to be a pain in the butt)

message 781: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 1103 comments I remember that too, that's where the McNab rule came in right? Because anyone who has read the series regularly knows his name is Ian even if he isn't called Ian in every book. Like Bill Compton in the Sookie Books. He is alwasy called Bill but in book 1 or 2 it's made aware that it's short for William.

message 782: by Dee (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 7316 comments I think so...like drew/andrew..abby/abigail (even though they are both on the list)

message 783: by Jane (PS), Moderator (new)

Jane (PS) | 24334 comments OK - Liam from One Foot in the Grave is fine for marking off. It is clear that he has been known as 'Liam' for quite a while (eg half a century or so); it is just that he is also known as William.

...I suppose it is like the shortened forms of the various names as well...

Justified through a combination of about three rulings!!

message 784: by Dee (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 7316 comments lol! yay!! (this is me procrastinating cause I don't wanna write my paper...) - arguing is so much more fun ;)

Jane (PS) | 24334 comments LOL!

message 786: by ~KarenH~, Moderator (new)

~KarenH~ | 11350 comments Whew! I'm glad that ruling went the direction it did, because I've added 3 names recently where the person goes by a nickname and there's only 1 brief mention of their real name anywhere in the book, but the real name is what I marked off - Robert for Bobby Ray in The Beast in Him, and Madelyn(Madeline) for Maddie and Jackson for Jax in Simply Irresistible.

message 787: by Mary X (last edited Jun 18, 2011 02:27PM) (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 1103 comments Well woohoo! I picked up a book I've had for a long time now because it has a Riley, Caroline and an Aidan. Well it has a Madeline too.

It's The Girl Most Likely To... if anyone needs those names.

message 788: by D.G. (new)

D.G. | 4477 comments That's a good of bunch names, Mary.

I meant to ask a question about recurring characters, sort of related to the Evil Character rule. I read a book where the heroine's brother is not a big part of the plot (he just shows up twice for small things but she thinks about him a lot) but as a recurring character, we know his personality and he's been prominent in a few of that past books, but just not in this one. Can I mark his name off? I thought I could but then I figured it would be better to ask.

message 789: by Jane (PS), Moderator (new)

Jane (PS) | 24334 comments Yes DG - I think that this is also along the McNab ruling - he is well-known from prior books and continues to appear in the current book, even though in a diminished capacity...

message 790: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 1103 comments She let me do that with Violet from the Ladies #1 Detective Agency books. She was only talked about (a lot) in the latest book. But was allowed because she was in pretty much all of the other books. She's also a main character's arch nemesis. Even though she never had a conversation-her past deeds were mentioned and her current evil doings were discussed.

message 791: by Dee (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 7316 comments I managed to find 4 in A Dirty Job - and keeping my eye out for others (I have one name marked off that is in another book i've read)...so I might end up using it instead...also got 4 from Letters from Home (highly recommend by the way)

message 792: by Amanda (new)

Amanda D. (tinyminx) | 634 comments Totally not sure if this was clarified in regards to the "If a character has changed their first name, which name can be marked off?" question, but what if two characters with two separate names actually turn out to be the same person throughout the story? For example, the Sarah Smith you've been reading about turns out to be the Natalie Jones that you've also been reading about in the book. Would only one name count because it's the same character although they've been portrayed as two for a certain amount of time?

Yes. You could use either of the two names, but not both - because it is the same person...

message 795: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 1103 comments Well darn. I picked up a book to read for Kaylee and it's only 148 pgs. Can I still count it? It's tradesized and there's no blank pages anywhere in it. It would probably be over 150 pgs in mass market paperback form. Probably the size of a Desire or Sillhouette book.

message 796: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 1103 comments I have 3books to read for the Erotica Box on PBS and I don't think there's a single name in them. 2 are paranormals taking place in made-up worlds so lots of made-up names. The 3rd is a historical but in flipping through I can see: Penelope, Severus and Antonia. Maybe I'll get lucky.

Annoying isn't it - it has happened to me as well. I can't bend on this rule though, otherwise it gets too confusing...

Is it part of a series? Can you invoke the novella rule?

message 798: by Mary X (last edited Jun 19, 2011 04:03PM) (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 1103 comments I don't think it is and even it was-I don't want to have to get other book to go with it just to get that name. I'll just skip that name if I don't come across something else.
