Hayley (mrsjohnson1985) Funny, seems that everyone is doing the same kind of "plan". I searched a few of those names using my library handy tools online and some of those names aren't mentioned in any books that I could find, which is fine (but then again this is only for main character search). It was kind of fun seeing which books had what names though!

message 102: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 1103 comments I'm hoping this will get me to read some books that have been lingering in my TBR pile for years. And that I can resist the urget to acquire books for names I don't have before I've gone through all the names I do have.

That PBS TBR pile search is really coming in handy. That and the fact that I have nothing to do at work this afternoon.

message 103: by Hayley (new)

Hayley (mrsjohnson1985) You sound like me Mary!. I have been going through my TBR pile too (while at work being bored out of my mind). I'm so happy that I have good reads to keep me company in times like this. LoL.

message 104: by Crystal S (new)

Crystal S (crystalann) | 129 comments I love the PBS search tool. I only wish that it was the same way here since I'm a bit better about adding books to GR than PBS.

message 105: by Dee (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 7316 comments you can also use the shelfari link that someone posted on one of the previous pages...just change where the name says michael to whatever name you are looking

Thanks Sandra - that would be great.

Sorry Rena - it is City of Bones: Brother Jeremiah."

Darn!

message 108: by [deleted user] (new)

By the way, how important or how frequent does a character have to appear in a book to officially call him a character?

message 109: by Sandra (new)

Sandra | 4260 comments Rena, Black Sheep does have Miles, which is also on the list as well as Abby/Abigail.

message 110: by Jane (PS), Moderator (new)

Jane (PS) | 24334 comments But - you can only use either Abby or Abigail :)

The character needs to appear more than once. For example: not a servant that is just in one scene. They don't have to be a main character, but they certainly need to be a part of the story.

Sandra wrote: "Rena, Black Sheep does have Miles, which is also on the list as well as Abby/Abigail."

Yeah! I just noticed about Miles! And thanks for mentioning the Abby thing too, Sandra.

Katharina | 802 comments Sandra wrote: "Rena, Black Sheep does have Miles, which is also on the list as well as Abby/Abigail."

Great. That book was already on my TBR list for May.

But I've also got the first 3 of Dara Joy's Matrix books on my May list and I doubt I'll find any of the names in those books. Oh well.

Lizz (Beer, Books and Boos) | 809 comments one more challenge can't hurt

have you guys thought about making a thread for the names.
Like one could be called Aaliyah-Alexandra
and so on

There is a spreadsheet with names floating around somewhere. Steph and Sandra were discussing it on the first page of this thread...

That is the spreadsheet that they were discussing at the beginning of this thread...

Jane (PS) | 24334 comments Thanks Hayley - What a spreadsheet!

message 119: by Hayley (new)

Hayley (mrsjohnson1985) I know! I looked @ it and was amazed!! I think Diane posted it on the first page of this thread and I went on there and was amazed at everything it had!

message 120: by Dee (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 7316 comments this is also an awesome link...http://www.shelfari.com/characters/mi...

just change where it says michael to whatever name you are looking for...i tested it out on about 20 different names and had success on all of them

message 121: by Hayley (new)

Hayley (mrsjohnson1985) I used that link Dee and it was a great help!!!

message 124: by Mary X (last edited Apr 27, 2011 06:41PM) (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 1103 comments Darn. I had a book I own come up Xavier but it's his last name. Last name doesn't count even if they call him that throughout the book and never really use the 1st name? (I did a search on Amazon and that's what it looks like with this book)

I suppose since rereads count, I can relisten to a Carpathian audiobook.

Sorry - it has to be their first name :)

Dee (austhokie) | 7316 comments isn't there like a vampire called xaiver is a series...you guys could also try the A-Z of character names for males/females...that might give you some of the weirder ones

That is the one that Mary is referring to - the Carpathian audiobook :) I think I'll be doing the same thing.

There are a few of Feehans' Carpathian books that would qualify except that they are in the middle of the series.

message 128: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 1103 comments Well rereads are allowed right? I've read them all at this point. So relistening to one in the middle somewhere won't be hard.

message 129: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 1103 comments Thanks to Dee's link-I might have another Xavier book. It's a book already on my PBS WL and I did an Amazon search and it looks like there's a character with the 1st name of Xavier. So I'll probably wait and see if that comes through.

message 132: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 1103 comments Now I'm havign trouble with a female Addison. Not that I'll have time to read a book for every name-I'd still like to find one. That I might be interested in reading.

message 133: by Jane (PS), Moderator (last edited Apr 28, 2011 05:23PM) (new)

Jane (PS) | 24334 comments I haven't come across one of those yet (not a name that is thick on the ground) - but I also haven't looked. I'll let you know if I see one :)

message 134: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 1103 comments I've come across males named Addison and last names. But no female first names. Lots of Addy.

message 135: by Tien (new)

Tien (tiensblurb) | 70 comments I can't see if anyone has come across this but this might be helpful:
http://www.goodreads.com/characters/

Can't really tell what order it's on but it's definitely NOT alphabetical! I think it's probably by popularity of the books noting the first one is Harry Potter

message 136: by Jane (PS), Moderator (new)

Jane (PS) | 24334 comments Mary wrote: "I've come across males named Addison and last names. But no female first names. Lots of Addy."

I came across an Aubrey - but he's male! I don't think I've heard of a female Aubrey. *shrugs*

message 137: by Mary X (last edited Apr 29, 2011 09:33AM) (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 1103 comments Hard As Nails by Helenkay Dimon has a female Aubrey as one of the main characters.

(I've known a couple female Aubrey's in real life)

This looks good for Neveah: When Wolf Comes by John Pappas . I put it on my booksfree queue but I don't know if I'll get it or not. Only if I'm doing well using books I own already.

I don't really plan on acquiring any books for this. At least not buying any. But if something looks good for a name I don't have, I might get something from the library or booksfree. But they'll be low priority.

message 138: by Jane (PS), Moderator (new)

Jane (PS) | 24334 comments Wow Mary - good work!

message 139: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 1103 comments That's actually thanks to Dee's shelfari link. Sigh. My reminder list at paperbackswap is growing and growing.

That shelfari link is awesome. I filled in several names from my own TBR that didn't come when searching my PBS TBR pile. That is good for main characters of a book. But not so great for secondary characters.

message 140: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 1103 comments Anyone is free to peruse my participants list and steal book ideas. I've gotten a lot of entertainment value otu of searching names. I get a little thrill when I find books I already own that work for multiple names.

I had no luck with Addison, Camryn and Brooklyn though.

(sigh-I need to get a social life)

message 141: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 1103 comments Oh and I think my first read will be Earthly Delights by Kerry Greenwood. I got this from Booksfree today and was flipping throuhg and it looks like there's a Kylie in the book. I name that I am missing. So crossing my fingers that she's in more than a few pages.

message 142: by D.G. (new)

D.G. | 4477 comments Mary - I've been looking at you for those hard to find names!

Just my luck that right now I'm finishing a book with a Evan, Matthew, Daniel, James and Elizabeth. And it's not too long!

message 143: by Jane (PS), Moderator (new)

Jane (PS) | 24334 comments LOL! I'll check your list out Mary, when I finally get around to considering my options!

(Kylie is such a popular name in Australia - I'm not surprised it turned up in an Australian author's book...)

Diane ~Firefly~ | 1512 comments Mary wrote: "I had no luck with Addison, Camryn and Brooklyn though. ..."

There is a cozy mystery series with a Brooklyn. There is a bit of romance in it. The first book is:
Homicide In Hardcover (A Bibliophile Mystery, #1) by Kate Carlisle

message 145: by Dee (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 7316 comments can we use a female pet for aubury?? cause I know of one...lol! (the cat in the Georgina Kincaid series is Aubrey)

message 146: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 1103 comments Ooh I have that on my PBS reminder list. I'll keep that in mind for Brooklyn. I'm going to make an effort to focus on books I own already. But I'd like ot have some possibles for the names I'm missing. Just incase I want to get something from the library.

My list on post 89 of the participants list thread. Looking for names has got boring now so I don't know how much more I'll do. I was doing most of it at work in the afternoons when I had nothing to do.

message 147: by Mary X (last edited Apr 29, 2011 07:39PM) (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 1103 comments I struck out on Camryn, Kennedy, Makenna, Peyton and Harper. (I've read all the Harper Connely books and don't think I want to reread one just to fill that name in)

LOL! I think the question was tongue-in-cheek, but the answer is 'no' anyway :)

message 149: by Mary X (last edited Apr 30, 2011 06:04AM) (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 1103 comments Hey I found a Makenna book in my own TBR almost by accident. I have a seperate little shelf in my hallway for books I've offered in games on PBS or offered for trade. Sometimes I post books that have a lot of copies in PBS before I've read them. So I was perusing that shelf and right there was The Ghost of Carnal Cove-heroine named Makenna.

It's posted to my PBS bookshelf so it didn't come up in my TBR search.

Now whether or not I'll get aroudn to reading it for this remains to be seen. I should peruse the rest of my posted books and my library list.
