Ed | 23 comments How much are you able to read each week? I wish I had more time to read more and run. My goal is to read an hour a day on weekdays and 3 hours on sat and sun but I find that hard.

message 2: by Genia (new)

Genia Lukin | 205 comments Oof. Depends on the week.

message 3: by Zulfiya (new)

Zulfiya (ztrotter) | 11 comments You are right, Genia! it depends on the week. During the spring break (instructors enjoy it as much as students do!!!!) I read three medium size novel. Otherwise i try to read 50 pages a day at least. But sometimes the book can be quite an engrossing read, that you sabotage all your duties and devour page after page:-)

message 4: by Genia (new)

Genia Lukin | 205 comments Yes, it definitely depends on the book. Well do I remember the time when I had a philosophy exam on the morning but, drat it all, couldn't leave off of this new book I picked up...

On an average week I'd say I read one or two books of a more or less standard length. On very busy weeks I may read half a book, even less. I do not set myself page goals per day, because it makes it too much like a chore. If there's a day on which I don't feel like reading, I don't - I know I tend to make it up elsewhere.

message 5: by Sissy (new)

Sissy I'd say two (or three) a week - one during the week and one on the weekends. Depending on the week of course. The book tracker here is telling me that I've read 39 so far this year - so I guess that would break down to about 2.5 a week?

message 6: by Shay (new)

Shay | 71 comments I read between 30-40 books a month. Usually somewhere around 35.

message 7: by Shirley (new)

Shirley (shirleythekindlereader) | 19 comments I listen to audio books all morning and read a book in the evening.

Has been running about 20 books a month.

I am retired so this is my dream come true.

message 8: by [deleted user] (new)

I read about an hour every day. On my days off, I read most of the day (minus time with the kiddos, household chores, etc. OOOF! That laundry can wait. I've gotta finish this chapter!).

message 9: by Karendenice (new)

Karendenice I'm also retired so I'm able to read as often, where ever and whenever I like. I can even stay up all night finishing a book. But I do wish that I could find a part-time job. My budget for books is practically non-existant. :( I go to the library a lot.

message 10: by Judith (new)

Judith (jloucks) | 1202 comments I'm retired also, or semi-retired when I have a contract job to work on. I read every morning and every afternoon when I am not working, so I can get up to 20 books a month at that rate. I range from 5 to 20 a month, depending on the time I have available to read.

message 11: by Genia (new)

Genia Lukin | 205 comments I, on the other hand, am a full-time student. But since I count as "Reading" the books I read for my coursework, my reading amounts even out a bit.

message 12: by El (new)

El I work full-time so I don't get to read nearly as much as I would like. I do commute by bus (20-30 min ride each way) so I read while I ride. If I'm able to take a break at work that gives me about another hour; but the majority of my reading takes place at home. This can vary depending on what else I have going on each evening, but if I'm lucky I get another couple hours of reading in before bed.

Weekends are usually another story entirely. I would prefer to spend my whole weekends doing little else besides reading, but life sometimes gets in the way.

message 13: by Susanna (new)

Susanna (jb_slasher) Depends on my mood and if I have other things that interest me more at the moment. Mostly during the week I'm pretty tired when I get home but I try to read at least a chapter a day (mostly at bedtime), and if I'm spending the weekend at home, I usually read at least 100 pages a day.

message 14: by Stuart (new)

Stuart (asfus) | 46 comments I am a busy shift worker so I am very lucky if I read one book in a week.

message 15: by Lina (new)

Lina (booksnotlovers) If I read whenever I have the time, I can reach up to 3-4-5 books a week. However, I don't. I read very little(much less than I would like too), and have periods where I read nothing at all. Right now, however, I read every waking minute. I'm a student, so I read when I'm on the bus, and I read in the evenings.

message 16: by Joy (new)

Joy I used to try to read 100 pages a day, but now I have a baby so have cut it down to about 50-60, but sometimes I can still get my 100 in, but like others have said it sorta depends on th ebook, sometimes the pages fly and sometimes they don't!

50-60/day is still amazing!

I try to do a book a week.

Thanks!! A book a week is really good!!!

message 19: by Hubert (new)

Hubert | 63 comments A round trip commute takes anywhere between 1hr and 1 1/2 hours, so usually I can get a good chunk of reading done then.

message 20: by Mike (new)

Mike | 78 comments I'm always reading one or two books at a time. I try to get in at least 100 pages per day. If the book is really good, I might stay up late and read more. My books are always by my couch. Even when the TV is on, I'm still reading. I love to read as you can tell. I wish I were a faster reader.

message 21: by Deanne (new)

Deanne | 681 comments Depends on work, I work in an operating theatre, which means doing shift work. On a normal shift I get to read at work for 1/2 an hour. If it's a late or night shift it depends on what work needs to be done and how urgently someone needs emergency surgery. I also have to do standbys which means staying at the hospital where I work in an on call room, there's no TV or radio so I take a book and hope I get to read for an hour before bed.
I usually read about 10 books a week, but it depends on the size of the books.

message 22: by KOMET (new)

KOMET I would consider myself a "plodding and steady" reader. Between M and F, I read on the subway (travelling to and from work), during lunch hour, and for an hour or two when I'm home.

All told, this translates to reading 4-5 books a month on average. (As a teenager, I read more briskly, probably 8 to 10 books a month.)

Among the books I'm now reading are the following ---

The Reign of Napoleon Bonaparte by Robert B. Asprey Robert B. Asprey

Diana in Search of Herself Portrait of a Troubled Princess by Sally Bedell Smith Sally Bedell Smith

Both of these books are on the magnitude of 443 and 450 pages, respectively.

message 23: by Doron (new)

Doron Yam (dylam) | 2 comments I work 12 hours a day, aprox.
I have two baby born twins and one son who is almost 5 years old.
I'm about to finish my MBA.
I play chess half proffetionaly (? - is this how it speld?).
according to that I don't have much time to read.
but yet,
I read on the bus on my way to work and back home. I read another hour or two in the night or early in the morning. I read more on weekends.
My luck is that I read quite fast...

message 24: by Shovelmonkey1 (new)

Shovelmonkey1 | 190 comments My reading depends on where i'm working. If I'm driving to a site or building survey then I have very little time but if i'm commuting to my office in University or the head office then i get a good bit of time every day for reading. This year I'm aiming to read three books per week but that all went a bit awry when I read The Meaning of Night by Michael Cox which is over 700 pages long and it took ages!

message 25: by Rusty (new)

Rusty | 30 comments Try to read at least 100 pages a day. Sometimes more, some times less.

message 26: by [deleted user] (new)

it depends on my mood.
i don't actually read just to finish something.
i read because i enjoy the story, and if i got bored or the book's not my taste, i stop and pick other book to read.

message 27: by Sofia (new)

Sofia (fivesunflowers) | 7 comments I read about 40-50 pages a day of whatever given novel I am reading. However, I am an avid magazine reader as well (National Geographic, Time, Vogue, whatever). I pretty much check books out of the library every week. I feel naked if I go somewhere and don't have some sort of reading material with me.

message 28: by Sophie (new)

Sophie (imsophiedavies) It's difficult to tell quite how much I read since I read in queues, walking to work, waiting at red lights, in the bath, before sleeping.. Reading in little spurts like this (along with say, a solid hour or so per day) means books get finished surprisingly quickly!

I'd say on average I will read between 75 to 100 pages per day.

message 29: by K. (new)

K. (aoutranc3) I have a Kindle, so I read at work during my lunch hour and then probably another 2 hours afterward. All in all, it averages to about 30 hours per week. I'm always reading something.

message 30: by Yrinsyde (new)

Yrinsyde | 295 comments I have a Kindle as well and I'm loving it! I read before bed every evening, I read on the tram to work, I sometimes read at lunch break (though I only get 30mins) and I read about 2hrs at home Sat and Sun - though it is interspersed with chores etc. Can't wait until I have more time to read!

message 31: by Yolo (new)

Yolo Yearwood (mirandaelizeabethyearwood) | 1 comments I also have a Kindle! And I just discovered free audiobooks on iTunes (those that are free on Kindle, such as the 100-year-old classics, that have been recited into audiobook are free at iTunes fyi). Since this major discovery, I have gotten a lot more reading accomplished.
By the way, A Room With a View is an iTunes audiobook...if anyone is interested :)

message 32: by Vanessa (new)

Vanessa I read 1-2 hours a day, usually at bedtime, as I work full-time and have two kids that take up most of the rest of the time.

message 33: by Inder (new)

Inder | 82 comments I read for 20 minutes each way on my four-days-a-week public transit commute, and I listen to audiobooks on my once-a-week long (45 minutes) driving commute. And that's pretty much it. I have a toddler and a bunch of hobbies, so I rarely read much on weekends. But I get through things pretty quickly anyway. It's amazing what you can do in a 20 minute BART commute. :-)

message 34: by Stuck_in_a_book (new)

Stuck_in_a_book (stuckinabook5) | 1 comments I read around 25 books a month. But it depends on the amount of homework i get but i still manage to read 20 books at least...

message 35: by Bucket (new)

Bucket | 248 comments I read in the morning - while I eat breakfast, ride the bus downtown, and then walk to work. That's about 45 minutes x 5 days = 3.75 hours

Sometimes I read during my lunch break - probably 2 days a week - so that's 2 more hours.

I read during my walk and bus ride home - that's 30 minutes x 5 days = 2.5 hours.

I spend an hour or two reading about 1 evening per weekday, on the other weekday evenings I read for about 30 minutes. So that's 6 hours.

On the weekend days, if it's raining I spend 3 hours a day more or less. If it's sunny, I am probably hiking and will only read for 1 hour all weekend. So that's 1 to 6 hours.

Adding it up: I spend about 15-20 hours each week reading. Pretty good stats!

I read the New Yorker more or less cover to cover, so that eats up a decent amount of my reading time each week. I still manage to read 2-4 books per month along with all those New Yorkers.

Wow! I love how you squeeze in reading whereever you can! Those are good stats!! You are really busy too!! It is very encouraging! I was so afraid that after I had my daughter I would never have time to read ever again, but seeing how you do it, I know that if there's a will there's a way! You just gotta prioritize!! And I guess I'm not doing so bad, I got 8 read just this month!

message 37: by Jess (new)

Jess Lane (catsofdeath) | 47 comments I can read 2-3 books a week but if it is more then a fluff book I may like books from the list I take my time to savour the book and to try to look at it like I did on college. This slows process but always worth the time.

message 38: by Deanne (new)

Deanne | 681 comments Discovered the read enabled on my kindle and tried it out, but it sounded too tinny and very american, bit like Stephen Hawkins computer voice, so I was a bit put off.

message 39: by Anne (new)

Anne (arl0401) | 6 comments I try to read a book a week. I listen to books on my commute, I read at night before bed and when I have insomnia. I've read alot of good books when I can't sleep!

message 40: by Ellen (new)

Ellen (elliearcher) I read whenever waiting in line, I listen to audiobooks on my commute, I read when I get home before chores & then before going to sleep & then I put a chunk of time in over the weekend. Children, work & other obligations of course taking a bit of that time. And Goodreads!

So it depends on what I'm reading-2-3 books a week of light stuff & much longer on more intensive works. I think I judge more by how much time I spend reading than the amount finished. Otherwise, I start feeling like a racehorse & don't want to run courses that will take too long-or require walking not running!

message 41: by Jeffrey (new)

Jeffrey (jeff_nardecchia) I try to do an hour a day, and occasionally more.

message 42: by Kimberly (new)

Kimberly Mine depends on the day and my mood. Usually since I've been off school since the beginning of May I've been getting in 3-5 hours a day or more.

message 43: by Heather (new)

Heather (heathera77) | 11 comments Hi all, I try to read most days, but as others have said it can depend on how my week is going and how much I'm enjoying the book. I can usually read for 30 mins - an hour each day though. If I'm really loving my book I'll get though it in 3-4 days, if it's a slow burner then it might take me up to 2 weeks. I've got 2 young children, a house to look after, a part time job, 2 voluntary commitments and various other things to fit in around my reading time!!

message 44: by Hubert (new)

Hubert | 63 comments 4 round trip commutes a week, 1.5 hours per round trip commute, total 6 hours. Plus some at home, while eating, etc.

message 45: by Summer (new)

Summer (summerskyes) Ah, I read much less... :-(
I have exams right now, so I hardly have time to read 20 minutes a day, however, as soon as I have summer holidays I'll devote 2 hours every day to reading:-)

message 46: by Leora (new)

Leora | 40 comments I probably average 5 books a week, especially since I got my i-phone and downloaded 5 reading apps. I read in line at the grocery store, in traffic etc. Plus a few hours or so at bedtime usually.

message 47: by Ellen (new)

Ellen (elliearcher) It so depends on what I'm reading. I read all the time-whenever I can, waiting on lines, etc. I listen to audiobooks when driving or cleaning. I can read mysteries quickly but dense writing or very long books take longer. I don't go so much by quantity as by what I want to read.

If I really love the language, it can take me a lot longer. Poetry, for example, can be very short and take me more time to read than 3 cozies.

message 48: by Rusty (new)

Rusty | 30 comments Try to read a minimum of 100 pages a day and my selections include classics, contemporary, YA books (to discuss with my grandchildren), fantasy and historical fiction/history. I have many books on my shelves that I have not posted because I haven't yet read them. Seem like as soon as I post them they are gone.

message 49: by KOMET (last edited Jun 10, 2011 07:40AM) (new)

KOMET Lately, I’ve taken to reading books by chapter. That is to say, I try to read up to 2 chapters in a single sitting. Should the chapters be short ones and I’m not under any time constraints, I may read 3 to 4 chapters in a sitting.

Notwithstanding that, as a general rule, I continue to read a book until I either come to the end of a paragraph, which signifies a transition to a different part of the story, OR I pause after a paragraph that marks the end of a conversation (or conversations) between characters.

message 50: by Deb (new)

Deb An unbelievable amount! I feel like I’ve always got a book plastered to my face. Lol Not several in a week but about almost a book a week and I’ve surprised myself. I feel good about that and I’m having a ball. I’ll read all of 2011 and then write all of 2012.
