Kristen (kristen120378) My mom just got "Nineteen Minutes" in a library book sale in the town I grew up in. The library gives you a bag and you fill it up as much as possible with books and the whole bag is 5 dollars. I don't think she realized she even got it until I mentioned "My Sister's Keeper". So, when I go home for Christmas I'm "stealing" it! LOL

As soon as I'm done with Plain Truth, I'm planning on getting "Myth of you and Me" for my trip next weekend, then starting "History of Love". That's the plan anyway.

message 152: by Holli (new)

Holli Kristen you can borrow my copy of The Myth of You and Me if you'd like. Want me to give it to you Saturday?

message 153: by Kristie (new)

Kristie (spedkristie) | 385 comments I just finished For The May Queen as well......LOVED IT.

Halfway through CUTS by Richard Laymon

next up JANE EYRE

JP books......Loved MY SISTERS KEEPER and CHANGE OF HEART.....There's only been 1 I have disliked Harvesting the Heart....I'm not too sure about her new one about Wonder Woman.

I've only read one Jodi P book Plain Truth. While she was a great story teller I was pissed off at her with the ending and have been hesitant to read any more because I hear she does that in quite a few of her books. I wont give it away but even though I had guessed it early on it just angered me to have it realized and for her to twist characters so much. Grrr months later that book still makes me angry. Like I said she was a good story teller but if all of them are like then I'll be the pissiest (sp?) reader ever if I keep going with her.

message 155: by Holli (new)

Holli I loved For The May Queen Kristie Faye....wasn't it so good?

I felt right there with the characters. Living there life and since I'm from CA I could even picture everywhere they were and where they went. Great book by one of our own members!!

message 156: by Carrie (new)

Carrie (missfryer) | 533 comments Tera, she does that every time. As soon as you think you have it figured out - BAM! A twist!

message 157: by Kristen (new)

Kristen (kristen120378) Thanks for the offer Holli, but I think I'll get my own. Just in case I loose the book enroute. I'm horrible with misplacing things! LOL

I'm going to go to Half Price books tonight and use my 40% coupon after work. Hopefully I can find a few on my list there.

message 158: by Holli (new)

Holli Sounds good Kristen!! Have fun :)

message 159: by Emily (new)

Emily (ejfalke) | 576 comments I read My Sister's Keeper, and I thought it was OK. Same way I thought The Secret Life of Bees was OK. They are good books and good stories, but they don't make me want to read everything by the author. They didn't make me go, "WOW!" Anybody read The Mermaid Chair, or hvae a JP book they'd really recommend?

message 160: by Tera, First Chick (new)

Tera | 2564 comments Mod
I have the Mermaid Chair if you want to borrow it Emily. Heck you can have it. I tried to read it because I really liked Secret Life of Bees but I didnt like it. Found it drawn out and blah. I was hoping for a lot more I guess. The only Jodi P book i read was Plain Truth and it pissed me off to the point I really have no desire to read any of her other books. (Elizabeth L loaned it to me so she has a copy if you want to try it)

message 161: by Cindy (new)

Cindy (cyndil62) | 1774 comments I too have The Mermaid Chair and was so disappointed! Someone can have my copy also if they want it. I really liked The Secret Life of Bees and was looking forward to reading more from the author so was surprised that I didn't like it.

message 162: by Kristie (new)

Kristie (spedkristie) | 385 comments I quit on the Mermaid Chair after 50 pages....I was soooooo annoyed with it. HATED IT!

Holli-I LOVED For the May Queen. I couldn't put it down....I totally connected with each character and lived the story with them!

I really liked Change of Heart by JP.

message 163: by Kat (A Journey In Reading) (last edited Oct 30, 2008 10:42AM) (new)

Kat (A Journey In Reading) (ajourneyinreading) | 390 comments I just finished "Nothing to Fear" by Karen Rose.

One of those romantic suspense books.... you know... killer is introduced.... two other characters introduced who are not connected... two connect.... killer is lurking.... two fall in love.... killer after one of the two... two get hurt and one goes to save the other..... killer gets caught.... two get engaged.... blah blah blah....... can you tell I'm not too fond of romance stories?? Suspense wise... was pretty good.

Now I am trying to decide what to read next. I am off work until Monday and can get a good bit of reading done if I could just figure out which book to start......... help me out ladies!

Choices at the moment:

The Alchemist

A Tree Grows in Brooklyn

The Thirteenth Tale (tried to start this months ago and got bored)

The Book Thief

Special Topics in Calamity Physics

Notice I said "choices at the moment"....... have to go to dentist tomorrow and there is a B&N and a BAM within 10 miles... so I am sure that my car will find its way to them....blasted car brain....

message 164: by Brandie (new)

Brandie (brandiemichelle) I read My Sister's Keeper and thought it was really good - but did not really like Change of Heart. Been meaning to pick up another Picoult book, but I have too many others to read!

message 165: by Tera, First Chick (new)

Tera | 2564 comments Mod
I LOVED The Book Thief. I would tell anyone to read it.

message 166: by Mich (new)

Mich | 150 comments JP books are among my favs BUT i didnt care for change of heart(thot it was like her harvesting the heart meets the greenmile) or the tenth circle(just did NOT get the comicbook thing)
i liked the Pact and My Sisters Keeper. Songs of the HumpbackWhale was good too-oh HECK they ALL were good!!

Hated the Mermaid Chair. was dying to read it b'c of Bees but no way did it measure up in my opinion.

i'm still slogging thru PANIC but thinking i'm about ready to hit the panic button-thinking i'm just not in the twisted plot mood.

i LOVED Land of a Hundred Wonders by Lesley Kagan tho and would recommend THAT or Whistling in the Dark by her too! Great reads with a good story.

message 167: by Mich (new)

Mich | 150 comments ASHLEY. from your 10/29 post..

message 168: by Cyn (new)

Cyn | 263 comments I have every JP book...I loved "Plain Truth" best...set on an Amish farm. Mine is a signed copy or I would lend it out, but if anyone wants to try antoher JP, her older ones held me more.

I have never read "The Alchemist" and it is also in my pile!

message 169: by Emily (new)

Emily (ejfalke) | 576 comments I really enjoyed The Alchemist.

message 170: by Laura (new)

Laura (apenandzen) | 1445 comments Kat - I would pick Thirteenth Tale 1st from your list and A Tree in Brooklyn 2nd. But I haven't read Book Thief, and have heard OODLES of good things about it. So there you have it! Happy reading.

message 171: by Jessica (new)

Jessica (jessicaafrank) | 4 comments April, I agree. I need to reread it as well. I found the first read fascinating.

message 172: by Jessica (new)

Jessica (jessicaafrank) | 4 comments I am reading Tara Janzen's Crazy Kisses. I am not sure I'll finish it.

I am also reading Walmart in the 21st century or a similar title. Work-related curiosity. (No, I don't work for Walmart but for one of its suppliers.

I am going to find my Chaucer and read that. I am also checking my shelves for Cisneros.
Jess

message 173: by Jessica (new)

Jessica (jessicaafrank) | 4 comments I have taught this book for a creative writing class that I taught to mostly military personnel. Do you find it an easy read? My students did, but I had some difficulty--enjoyed it but found it hard to keep track of who and what. It is well worth the read. What have you learned about it in your lit class?

message 174: by Carrie (new)

Carrie (missfryer) | 533 comments I've seen AWAY by Amy Bloom and thought it looked good, Meg!

___ I am reading A Great and Terrible Beauty
It's great so far!

Shelby *trains flying monkeys* I'm starting Pillars of the Earth. So far it's fascinating!

message 176: by Carrie (new)

Carrie (missfryer) | 533 comments Have you read the other two?

message 177: by Tera, First Chick (new)

Tera | 2564 comments Mod
I just LOVED pillars of the earth. So well done.

message 178: by Meg (new)

Meg (megvt) | 3069 comments I loved Pillars of the Earth and World Without End. Highly recommended.

I just finished A Child Called It. So depressing, unfortunately I work with a lot of kids that fit in that description. I heard his other two books get a little more uplifting.

message 179: by Sandy (new)

Sandy (sandila) | 75 comments I'm starting on From Dead to Worse by Charlaine Harris today. It's her last book she's written in the Sookie Stackhouse Vampire series. Then I've got several to pick up and read. I need a new bookshelf. I need to add that to the list.

message 180: by Kristie (new)

Kristie (spedkristie) | 385 comments I started Jane Eyre on Friday.

message 181: by Cyn (new)

Cyn | 263 comments Meg and all ~ "Pillars..."~ That is the book that rides around in my car with me that I read when I am waiting for my kids..I may actually get through it by the time my 1st grader graduates! LOL

Guess I better bring it inside and try to really get into it!

message 182: by Laura (new)

Laura (apenandzen) | 1445 comments I might start on Pillars after I finish an 800 pager I've been reading and mostly audio-ing for sometime - Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell. I'm also still reading I Capture the Castle, which is getting better now that there are love interests for both daughters.

I have the first Sookie Stackhouse in my TBR, I'm really looking forward to that one. I better get a move on too, because it is a holdlist book at my library.

And gotta start reading Extremely Loud...soon too!

message 183: by Laura (new)

Laura (apenandzen) | 1445 comments Has anyone read the other books in the A Great and Terrible Beauty series?

How are you liking Jane Eyre, Kristie Faye?

message 184: by Kristie (new)

Kristie (spedkristie) | 385 comments So far so good....

Yes read all the AGATB they only get better!

message 185: by Lisa Julianna (new)

Lisa Julianna (lisajulianna) | 80 comments I am reading Twilight and Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close.

Two different complete styles of books but both so far are good. :~)

message 186: by Carrie (new)

Carrie (missfryer) | 533 comments I'm still loving AGATB :)

message 187: by Meg (new)

Meg (megvt) | 3069 comments I didn't like Mermaid Chair either, but liked Bees. I am looking forward to the movie.

I like Jodi Picoult, my favorite being Second Glance. If you decide to read it, do some research on Eugenics while you are reading. It scared the crap out of me. Also, for my Vermont friends, really really read it. What a discussion this book could be. I met Jodi Picoult and she is awesome in person.

message 188: by Cindy (new)

Cindy (cyndil62) | 1774 comments Finished "Love Walked In" over the weekend and now have started "Belong To Me" both by Marisa de los Santos. I enjoyed "Love Walked In" though it started out a little slow for me.

message 189: by Laura (new)

Laura (apenandzen) | 1445 comments I loved the Mermaid Chair, but haven't read Bees. Wow, I wonder if I would still like it now. It sure got some bad reviews here! I was a little oversexed at the time, maybe that had something to do with it??

<< frowns >>

hmm

message 190: by Brandie (new)

Brandie (brandiemichelle) I just finished Cecelia Aherns, Love, Rosie yesterday, and I really liked it! Has anyone read it? I saw the movie about her other book (PS, I Love You) but this is the first of hers that I read. I picked up on Saturday night, just for something different, and loved it so much I finished it yesterday. Good chick lit book!

I started to read the 19th Wife last night but didn't like the style so I'm putting it down and picking up 100 White Women. I'm pushing myself to stick with my goal for the year and so far so good but the holidays and nanowrimo are taking its toll.

Shelby *trains flying monkeys* Oh Tera. I liked 100 White Women. I keep thinking it was a true story and had to keep telling myself. "Hey it's not!" Enjoy.

message 193: by Cyndi (new)

Cyndi (chill77) I had to see what all the fuss was about, so I picked up "Twilight" over the weekend. I'm going to start it today.

message 194: by Deb Obrien (new)

Deb Obrien | 23 comments Mystic River and Bastard out of Carolina currently...but have a whole stack waitin'

message 195: by LinBee (new)

LinBee I loved Dorian Gray, even though it was one of those High School Required books. I have to get around to rereading it.

Right now I am reading:
Going Postal by Terry Pratchett

The Alchemyst by Michael Scott (book on CD)

Shelby *trains flying monkeys* Deb, Bastard out of Carolina is one of my most fav. books ever. I hope you enjoy it.

message 197: by Cyn (new)

Cyn | 263 comments I loved L M Montgomery when I was younger too....

tera~ I recently read "1000 White women" for my real life book club..and I also kept thinking that it was a real story! I liked it

message 198: by LinBee (new)

LinBee I LOVE Terry Pratchett, he is one of my favorite authors. He is good if you just want to laugh out loud (and I do constantly with him). He is a wonderful satirist, but not too raunchy. You should check him out!

message 199: by Holli (new)

Holli Who wrote that 1000 White Women book Cyn or Tera?

message 200: by Deb Obrien (last edited Nov 05, 2008 09:17PM) (new)
