Debbie (db_debber) | 2757 comments It's time to get ready for the August Monthly Challenge!

Special thanks to the members who regularly stop by at the Suggestions Thread and share their input. It definitely helped me a lot when I put together the monthly categories. Thanks, guys!

This thread will be for suggestions and helpful hints.

The participants thread can be found here:

August Monthly Challenge: Participant Thread

1. "A" is for August: Read a book which title or authors name starts with "A".

2. Happy Birthday!: Read a book from a August birthday celebrant's GR bookshelf whose "day" falls on the same "day" as yours. If no one has the same day, choose someone with the closest day to yours.
(August Birthday Celebrant list)

3. Geography: Read a book whose author, character or setting is from New Jersey.

4. Kiss and Make up Day: Read a book with the word kiss in the title, with kissing on the cover or has a couple that spend the book making up.

5. National Thriftshop Day: Read a book you bought at a thrift shop, got from the library or paid $1 or less for.

6. Frankenstein Day: Read a horror book or a book with a "monster" in it.

7. Lazy Day: Read a book that you have had on your reading list for some time or a book that you would be able to finish in a day (if you had all day to read it).

8. Back to School: Read a book that takes place in school or a young adult book.

9. Romance Awareness Month: Read a book from the first 8 pages of the
Popular Romance Books Shelf

10. Reader's Choice: Read a book, any book. It is your call which one.

Challenge duration: August 1 - August 31

Here is a list of books that features Troubled Marriages

Joanne | 195 comments Help! I am totally stuck on no 6. Frankenstein Day. I don't read horror and can't think of a book (pref romance with HEA) with a monster in. The closest I can come up with is Lover Unbound by J.R. Ward would this do? If not suggestions needed :)

message 5: by Fran, Moderator (new)

Fran | 12278 comments Joanne, I am hoping we can use the term "monster" to also mean a horrible person, someone who does bad things. I want to use The Body Finder for this task; she is trying to find the serial killer tormenting her town. It's YA, and I don't think there's anything too graphic in it.

message 6: by Vi (new)

Vi | 2794 comments Joanne, if you'd wish to start on horror, then you could check out Shadowed Summer by Saundra Mitchell. It's mild, YA, so you're bound to have some kind of HEA. I haven't read it yet though.

message 7: by Penney (new)

Penney (pschoener) | 3553 comments Joanne, I'm also hoping/thinking books with a 'Beauty and the Beast' theme like When Beauty Tamed the Beast (Happily Ever Afters, #2), Beauty Tempts the Beast, Beauty: A Retelling of the Story of Beauty and the Beast, Beastly and sooooo many others.

message 8: by Fran, Moderator (new)

Fran | 12278 comments Also thinking of Lucifer's Daughter for the "monster"- the devil himself!

message 9: by Lacy (new)

Lacy (lacy_stewart) | 1966 comments Do zombies count as monsters?
What does HEA stand for?

message 10: by Desperado (new)

Desperado (lethallovely) | 822 comments HEA=Happily Ever After=The Hero & The Heroine "do it". Preferably many many times.

message 11: by Debbie (new)

Debbie (db_debber) | 2757 comments All of those sound like great interpretations of "monster". I would say any and all of them would work just fine.

1 - many many times?! :)
2 - loving the name today ;)

LOL!!

I'm glad about the wide definition of monster, I don't want to read a horror story either!

You're very welcome, Lacy.

Joanne | 195 comments Thanks everyone, some great suggestions. My reading list has just got longer! :)

message 17: by taita (new)

taita This is probably a stupid question but if my Birthday is in August then could I mark one of my own TBR selections as meeting the Happy Birthday! item? ;-)

message 18: by Penney (last edited Jul 23, 2011 09:15AM) (new)

Penney (pschoener) | 3553 comments No question is ever stupid and I happen to know the answer to this one. Yes!
Happy Birthday to You!

Lynne (lovetoreadgal) | 1182 comments A suggestion for monster is a book that a friend just gave me The Remarkable Miss Frankenstein by Minda Webber. The reviews at GoodReads are that great, but the friend had good things to say about it.

Fran | 12278 comments This one is free right now on Amazon, looks like a short Erotica- Lights, Camera...Monsters Lights, Camera...Monsters (Monsters in Hollywood, #1) by Lila Dubois (in case anyone wants to use hot demons for the monsters!)

Thanks Penney!

Nairabell | 433 comments I'm not sure if a book I'm waiting for would count as a Thriftshop one. I used my loyalty points to pay for it so it didn't technically cost me anything, but it did use nearly £4 of points. What do you guys reckon?

Works for me since you paid with points and no actual money.

message 30: by Wan (new)

Wan (wanwaddell) | 2081 comments I will not be able to finish the challenge. Irene hit and been losing power since Saturday and don’t know when it’ll come on. Once the daylight is gone, my reading time is up. I will probably finish the book I’m currently reading and ended up with 7/10 but well. Better luck next time.

Debbie (db_debber) | 2757 comments Just be safe Wan, that is the important thing.
