Maryfox | 398 comments Just joined and looking forward to finding more good stuff to read.

My husband and I are retired and are full-time cruisers aboard our sailboat Sea Fox although we've been dock bound in North Carolina for the past 14 months.

Space limitations limit us to paperbacks except when we're in one place long enough to get library cards. While in NC we've especially enjoyed reading Margaret Maron who gives us a great feel for our temporary home.

Jan C (woeisme) | 39173 comments That sounds great.

Welcome to the group.

I've read one Margaret Maron and have another sitting on a shelf somewhere. My mother lives in Western North Carolina so I get down that way about twice a year.

Otherwise, it is Lake Michigan for me.

Hi Maryfox, thanks for joining the group. If you're short of space this group might be a problem: your TBR is going to explode!

aprilla Hey Maryfox - no need to panic... if you run out of space consider audiobooks!! There's a solution for everything here... except those exploding TBR lists LOL

Maryfox | 398 comments Our space problems are partially eased by trading books with other boaters. And alomost every marina has a book exchange. We've found some great used bookstores, too, and they'll usually buy back or give credit for books. That being said, we still keep far too many books on board because we think we'll read them again (and sometimes we do). Problem is that they end up getting stored in little spaces that aren't easy to get to.

Books are VERY difficult to get rid of because we usually don't want to.

Sounds great for those (unlike me) who are not susceptible to motion sickness. (Oops).

I have to chuckle about the Margaret Maron books, which are, in fact, now one of my favorite series. I read the first couple of books when I still lived in Montana (Montana native) and while I more or less enjoyed them, did think them quite exaggerated.

After relocating to Kentucky, I picked them up again after several years here. Nope, not exaggerated at all. I've "met" most of the characters in one form or another over the past 10 years.

Maryfox | 398 comments Yes, Sharon, the South is different than the rest of the country. And I suspect that the "deep south" is different than the coastal south.

One of the things we've enjoyed about Maron's books is that Deborah travels to different places in the state. Gives us ideas on interesting places to visit and insights into those places. We're re-reading some of the series just now.

Hi Maryfox. You've joined a great group here. I hope you enjoy the discussions. I remember reading Margaret Maron books years ago: I'll have to check her out again.

Jane (flopsybunny) | 159 comments I just wish that there were more Morse although I have heard that Colin Dexter is writing a new T.V. series about the young Morse when he first became a policeman.

I think you truly have to live in some areas for years to really have a feel for the people, the customs and the area.

I'm a Montana native myself and so often see recommendations from people reading books set in the modern west that rave about the characterization and accuracy ... I read the book and to me, it's obviously written by someone who spent several long vacations in the area or maybe, at most, went to college for a couple of years in the area. They're writing stereotypes ... not real people.

M. Myers (mruth) | 100 comments Hi, Maryfox. If you're sailing & have limited space for books, I recommend a e-reader. Being a bit of a luddite I didn't think I'd like one, but after trying one for a week I was sold. Use it at home all the time & it's great for traveling. You never run out of books!
