message 1: by Chrissie (new)

Chrissie Barry, I really want to thank you for beginning a group which has such flexibility. The goal is for each of us to get what we want from our reading choices. The common denominator is of course learning about different cultures!

I have a self-imposed deadline, so I'll start reading now.

Chrissie I have too many books for each country, I want to read all of them, so I will now start reading books on my list from those countries that have numerous alternatives. Then, when I get to 1/1 2012, I will try to not read books from the same country.

And I am every day adding more books to my list anyway!

What I cannot decide is whether to remove the books I read this year from my list, or whether to just put completion dates on the list. Then I can see which books I read this year verus next.

I thinnk I will just remove them.

Janice (jamasc) *Note to self... It helps to read all threads before you start leaving questions.*

I will bring my question over to this thread and delete it from the other, since it rightfully belongs here.

message 5: by Janice (new)

Janice (jamasc) I have a question. If we are setting our own rules, may we set our start and finish dates too? Just asking. Don't throw tomatoes or anything. :)

message 6: by Ally (new)

Ally McCulloch (allymcculloch) Barry - I've already set my own rules. Please and thank you.

message 7: by Chrissie (new)

Chrissie Janice, what about eggs? :0)

Yes, you can set your own dates. Sho has already started. Me, I am now reading books from countries on my list that have several titles.

Eggs would fall under the "anything" category. LOL!

I'm just so excited about the list I've come up with that I want to start now. But I will hold off until I have a few others with higher priority crossed off my list. That might take me up to Jan 1st anyway.

message 9: by Betty (new)

Betty I don't know of anyone's list written in stone (except maybe B's). I don't plan to start my list in 2011, but if I were to read some of the 2012 titles in 2011, I wouldn't count them as 2012 readings (that's sacred). The titles I snatched off my 2012 list, I'd replace with something else to have a complete list of 52 books from different countries on Jan 1.

Cool, it's like being a prince and having a whipping boy.

message 11: by Chrissie (new)

Chrissie Asmah, BTW, I remove books that I read this tear from my list.

Once we are in to 2012, I will date each book as it is completed. Then at the end of 2012, I can easily rmove them from my list and have a list for 2013. :0)

message 12: by Chrissie (new)

Chrissie Judy, feel free to do the same. This system works for me.

Excellent foresight, Chrissie! I'm still working on 2012...

Chrissie Asmah, feel free to either check out my list of multiple choices or my shelves. I cannot possibly decide NOW what I will feel like reading THEN! Probably you can get a hold of more books from my shelves than I can. I only have on my list those I know that are available.

PS I am putting the book I think I like best on the top of the books under each country.

so, think about it..."

Oh, so this is the thread where you have been deciding what to do with me. It's okay. I've started already. You can place my "Ally's Books" thread wherever you wish.

message 16: by Chel (new)

Chel | 187 comments I started early because I am working on another list too and because I am too busy to read my 52 in one year. The ones I have finished so far are under "Chel's Books" or "Chel's List".

message 17: by Jenny (new)

Jenny (penciltwister) This is not a question to the challenge itself, but more of a geography/nationality/language question - I didn't know which other thread I should direct it to. Ok, so the question is:

When I list my books according to countries, according to which criteria would you list them?
For example: I want to put Lolita by Nabokov in. Do I put it under Russian for author nationality, USA for novel setting or France for original publishing country?

message 18: by Genia (new)

Genia Lukin Author nationality and setting are the big ones for me. Personally, I would not put Lolita under Russia: Nabokov wrote it in English, while living abroad, having set the book in the US. It's not "Russian" to me.

message 19: by Jenny (new)

Jenny (penciltwister) Arguably the novel is not Russian, and Nabokov is, but that is also the basis of my inquiry: is if the country classification follows the author or novel? (not that one is more legit than another, I just have a hard time putting anything in boxes).
Another one I am having trouble putting in a box is Karen Blixen (pen name: Isak Dinesen) - a Danish author writing, among others, Seven Gothic Tales in US-English AND then translating it into Danish.

message 20: by Anne (new)

Anne (reachannereach) Many of us go by setting of the novel or birthplace of the author or a combination of the two. It's up to you to decide what you want to do.

The order you listed the three criteria would be the order I would prioritize them personally. I wouldn't even consider the publishing country as that important at all, however.
