It is similar to the politics and people voting for a certain party because they belong to it, instead of finding out where the nominee stands on issues, or what the issue is actually about. Same thing goes for the celebrities that press their "charity" on people. Fine with me if they know what they are talking about, have physically participated in the fight, but it is a real put off when they are obviously just trying to look good to everyone.
I would say working towards helping a cause is good, living for it (especially with being misinformed) and becoming a fanatic about it, not so much.

And while I agree with what seems to be most people's opinion - that it got a little old - I don't think it was a bad thing for her to undertake.

Hermione was right in her desire to help the house elves. It was how she went about it that was wrong. Her desire to help others, though, is an important part of her personality and, that, I think (besides adding some much needed humor to the story) was the point Rowling was trying to make.

Although, I do think that Rowling was trying to make a subtle statement about human/civil rights through Hermione, authors can be tricky like that.
My thoughts:"If it's not broke don't fix it." and "Just leave me alone and let me live my life."

It wasn't that the house elves didn't know any better - it's that they LIKED working for people. That's what they were made to do. It's their purpose. Yes, some of them get mistreated, but they actually prefer that than dying on the side of the street because they got "fired" and can't find anyone else to work for.
I liked the SPEW campaign at first, but honestly; if the house elves are happy (which most of them were) then let them be happy, without bringing in campaigns like SPEW which offends them.

Although, I do..."
Very true, it may have been her own little plug for civil rights. But as far as your "If it's not broke don't fix it." idea, that's kind of the point. To her it was "broken". She saw a group of individuals being enslaved and abused and set out to stop it.
People need to stand up for their beliefs even if others think they're wrong. If no one ever stood up for things like this, we'd still have slavery in America for one thing. I'm guessing a whole lot of slave owners in early America saw nothing wrong with having slaves - they saw it as the way things are supposed to be. And many of the slaves, although maybe not happy with their situation, accepted it.
However once freed, they didn't have to stop what they were doing, but they now had the choice and the rights not to be owned or abused and to receive payment and benefits for their work.

Not that I completely agree with Hermione either. This question is way more complicated than simply being right or wrong in wanting to free them.

not all of them!

Ok, so the elves didn't mind being slaves who were completely at their master's mercy as far as how they were treated. Does that mean it was ok to leave them that way?
They didn't know any better. Things were the way they were and they were contented that way.
Think about it this way, a baby is born to a psycho path who locks them in a room and from time to time shows affection, but the majority of the time ignores or even abuses them. That child very well may be relatively 'happy' because they don't know any other way.
I don't think any decent person would tell a 'nosy' outsider to butt out if they were trying to get that child the rights they deserve. Even if they go to that kid and tell them what they want to do. He might be insulted by the idea, but does that mean it's good to leave him there?
The decent thing to do is to give him the option to have a better life. To be treated a whole lot better.
And if he decides to reject it after having the option(when he's old enough, of course), that would be his choice.

i totally agree with u, arti, she was just trying 2 help!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I love the fact that Hermione is so passionate in her belief, but she's just a kid so is learning how to express her passion and desire to create change for the better
oh dear I seem to have gone a bit fanatical about HP, but I really do love the series.
