Did anyone else feel sad that Julius Root died?

I think it was horrible...
I mean the scene wasn't that bad, I actually thought it was kind sentimental, even though it was pushed away quite quickly. But that does happen in fast-paced books. At the end though it did go back, which I think was very nesaccary. I would have been pissed if it was just left with a few tears and some sad thoughts. What did anoy the sh** out of me, was the fact that Holly WASN'T ALLOWED TO GO!!!
I mean seriously. What. The. Hell.
That new Commander is a complete prick.

Root's death was an excellent moment. It's rare that an author can get away with killing off an important character, but the way Colfer handles it works. It's just depressing enough to make the reader care, but it's never blown out of proportion. It's realistic, and I don't mean that to have a character die is a reflection of realism. Any author can kill off their creations, but few can do this in a way that's satisfying. I didn't enjoy the death of Julius, but I can hardly think of a better way for him to go out.

I hate Julius root.him being dead makes be glad that he can stop being a dick to everyone.

To be honest, until he died I never even thought a good guy would die in the series. I dunno, it just never occurred to me. So when he died (in a spectacularly horrible way) it took a moment to sink in, then I hyperventilated. I loved Root and his relationships with all the other characters, and Holly's part in that scene just plain hurt. Despicable. But it made the series better, I guess.

I am currently reading the fourth Artemis Fowl book, The Opal Deception. I have just reached the part of the book where Commander Root dies. Frankly, I already knew that he was going to die because before I read that part of the book, I saw this discussion by accident. I feel that Root's death was very sudden and caused a great impact towards Holly which is probably because he was a very strong father figure towards Holly. Also, it felt quite different because Root was the first character I know to die in the whole series so far. I wonder whether many things will be different because Root left the story.

As Grace two posts above me said "I hate that he died!" You said it!

it's not right that he died. I already didn't like opal but now it's like hate.

WHY EOIN???? WHY?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?

So sad :'(

I was utterly shocked. I really liked Root and I felt really sad. :(

I was heartbroken.I knew that he loved Holly like his own daughter(you know,in his own gruff, military guy way),and Holly loved him.

Spoiler much? Anyways, I didn't cry but I do miss him a bunch. He was amazing and I was just getting to know him as a person, and not just some mean character in a book.

BUT.... I almost didn't think of Opal of one of my favourite characters when I found out that she set Holly up.

I cried when he was killed.... But I can't say that part didn't make the book better. The Opal Deception is my all-time favourite of all the books, and since this is my favourite series, The Opal Deception is the best book I have ever read.

I wasn't to sad because i have absolutely no personal connection, but he had a horrible death, i really feel bad for him, but I could also tell that he was going to die in this book anyways, he seemed kind of old, eoin colfer probably thought nothing of taking him out of the series because -unless he has a big plan for another artemis fowl book coming up- he's done with the series.

first of all I am in love with this cleverly written book!

Root's death was obviously shocking to nearly everyone! I was shocked and I found it awesome at the same time. My mind was whizzing with ideas about what would happen next. And Foaly struggling to find out what had happened on CCTV was infuriating for me!

So sad..

yes. he was almost a family figure in the book especialy to holly, like a gruff but lovable father or grandfather.

His death makes this my least favorite of the series. The good guys should always get out alive in a perfect fictional universe.
