Cairnraiser | 53 comments There are two versions of "The Gunslinger". There's the original published version (copyright 1982) and there's a revised (retconned) version from 2003.
I've read the original version at least twice and for this discussion I finally went out and bought the "Expanded and revised" edition.
So what are you reading?

Jon (jonmoss) | 889 comments I haven't received my requested edition from BookMooch yet. When it's in my hands (next week probably), I'll post the exact ISBN etc.

Angie | 342 comments I am reading the original, only because it is the one I own. I know my mom bought the newer and felt she did get more information out of it.

I read the newest version when I read it. I enjoyed King's intro!

Angie | 342 comments OK weird, I know I posted a comment here the other day about the newer version of the book but now I don't see it here. Yea REALLY weird. It is one of those situations where I wonder if it was all in my mind? I dreamed that I posted it? Anyways.. let's try again:

In 2003, King revised The Gunslinger. As stated in the new introduction, King felt it was necessary for many reasons. First, he felt the first book was 'dry' and hard to get into for new readers. He also revised it to make it more linear with the series' ending. The added material was about 9000 words (35 pages).

My point is that probably for newer readers they should get the newer version because it seems like King wrote it for that purpose.

You did post a comment, but it was in the "First Impressions" thread instead of this one.

Angie | 342 comments Wow, do I feel like I am getting old or what? :)

message 8: by Michael (new)

Michael (bigorangemichael) | 187 comments I've read both version. The new edition came out before King released the final three volumes. I believe he said he'd done some things to reconicle continuity within the novels but that he hadn't changed any of the writing--warts and all.

Essentially, it's the same story. There are some VERY minor difference but you can't go wrong with either verson.

Hi Cairnraiser,

I have read the original versions of the Gunslinger, The Drawing of the Three, Wizards and Glass, Song of Suzanna, Wolves of the Calla, and The Dark Tower (the last book in the series). Loved the way King uses common and everyday reality then bending it out of shape. There are times when this series goes left when I felt it was going to turn right.LOL. Still I got very attached to the characters of Jake and Oy.
Tee
