What's the Name of That Book??? discussion

I'm looking for something like Sailor Moon or H2O Just Add Water, but a book (not manga) version with a similar plot line? Where they hide their powers from their parents?
Maybe they can become animals or control people with their minds...or turn back time, fly...become invisible..or something like that!

Just as long as it isn't violent and ISN'T in a medieval setting. Something pretty much a PG rating?

The tattoo one sounds interesting. Don't know if I like how it mentions killing though. I'm a bit of a wuss T-T

There's a parental advisory page here that tells you about the content. It doesn't sound like there is much violence, but that page tells you exactly what there is.

I really liked the Animorphs series back in the day. It's about a group of teenagers that can change into animals at will and have to fight off against an alien attack. There are a lot of books in the series, and although there is some violence, I don't remember it being gruesome or gory at all. Wikipedia gives a lot of spoilers so I wouldn't suggest looking it up there! Here's the first one The Invasion

I know you want a regular book, but Saint Tail, Volume 01 is a good example of what you are looking for. Haneoka is a normal high school girl, who secretly is the magician/thief Saint Tail, who steals to help people. Of course, the boy she likes has vowed to capture Saint Tail, and is oblivious to her growing feelings to him.

Not violent in the least, and surprisingly well done.

If you want an inversion, The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya is where the girl has magical powers, but everyone else is trying to hide the fact she does from HER. Because, you see, she might just be God.

Girl with the Silver Eyes is a possibility. I can't recall the author.

There ist a German "witch"-series called "Bibi Blocksberg" by Elfie Donnelly. Just everybody in Germany knows her... It's funny, sometimes romantic, sometimes dramatic, too. There are English versions of the books and there is a movie, too. Check Wikipedia to learn more:

And you might also like Cornelia Funke, author of the famous "Ink Heart Triologie" (there's a movie, too). In her Ink-Heart books, there are more characters using supernatural powers, but the heroine is a young girl called Meggie.

The author of that book is Willo Davis Roberts. I was going to recommend that one too. As I remember, there isn't any violence, but a lot of suspense.

If you want to go to a more classic thing, you could try the A Wrinkle in Time books. There's quite a few of those, and it's mainly a lot of time travel and it's not medieval.
For more modern stuff, try First Light, which is a little supernatural-y, there's also the Pseudonymous Bosch books which are always fun, with kind of a mystery thing. In the later books theres more superpower stuff.

The best thing I thought of are the Terry Pratchett "Wee-Free Men" books. Definitely try those. Search "Tiffany Aching" and it'll come up.

Recently a got Priscilla the Great free on Amazon; a girl with super-powers, but she only hides this secret from her parents like half of the book.

edit: not sure how violent some of the scenes are, on rereading the description. It's a 9-12 book, but be warned.

I read the book, and at one point the girl is crushed halfway to death, but it doesn't talk about her blood or anything like that. it is a really good book, though, and is just what you are looking for.

Did you ever see the TV series The Secret World of Alex Mack, she has to hide her powers from most people including her parents. There's a book series based on the TV series.
