Jennifer | 4 comments I originally posted this on my Kisses Grim blog, but thought it might be of interest to people here:

There are three, yes three, upcoming Snow White movies: "Mirror Mirror" (Release Date: March 16, 2012), "Snow White and the Huntsman" (Release Date: June 1, 2012) and Disney's "The Order of the Seven" (2013). See below for a brief comparison of each movie.

Mirror Mirror

The relatively unknown Lily Collins (daughter of singer Phil Collins) plays a Snow White with girl power in "Mirror Mirror". Based on the trailer, Julia Roberts steals the show as the petulant Evil Queen. It is definitely a family movie, containing a bit of action, romance and comedy to ensure it appeals to a broad audience. My guess is that it will prove to be an entertaining, but forgettable movie to anyone other than diehard Julia Roberts fans.

Snow White and the Huntsman

The more maturely-themed "Snow White and the Huntsman" appears to be a re-imagining of the classic fairytale as a war movie. Twilight fan favourite Kristen Stewart plays Snow White, opposite Charlize Theron, who plays the chillingly ruthless Queen Ravenna.

Under the tutelage of the ruggedly handsome Eric the Huntsman (Chris Hemsworth, "Thor"), Snow White transforms into a sword-wielding Joan of Arc figure reminiscent of Alice in the climactic scenes of "Alice In Wonderland" (the movies share the same producer). Hopefully the ending to "Snow White and the Huntsman" is more satisfying than simply having the protagonist slice off the head of her enemy.

Even if the movie turns out to be flawed, its beautiful imagery has me sold. I will be eagerly awaiting its summer release.

The Order of the Seven

Disney's "The Order of the Seven" is another live-action retelling of Snow White, but heads in a much different direction than any other version. Set in 19th-century China, seven warriors assist an English woman who goes to Hong Kong to attend her father's funeral, only to find out her step-mother is plotting her murder.

Not much more information is currently available, but based on what I've heard so far, I'd much rather watch Disney's 1937 animated film, "Snow White and the Seven Dwarves".

I predict Kristen Stewart's Snow White will be the fairest of them all. Which Snow White movie are you most eagerly awaiting?

Collin (midnightaster) I'm hoping that Snow White and the Huntsman is more Evil Queen and the Huntsman. That would be a great movie. Unless Kristen Stewart's acting has improved, though... eh.

Mirror, Mirror looks like it could be funny, but I'm a youngster and I'm not sure if it'll have... y'know, stuff. =P Its Snow White does look a lot more interesting, though.

I haven't heard about the Disney version, but to be honest, it sounds a lot more interesting to me personally. Have to keep watching that one...

Jessi | 76 comments I honestly look forward to watching all three though I am not a huge Kristen Stewart fan but I will give her a fair chance =) I'm most excited to Snow White & the Hunstmen though because I've been hearing about it the longest

Krista (findyourshimmy) | 16 comments I'm most looking forward to Snow White and the Huntsman, followed by Mirror Mirror. At this point, the jury is out for me on the Disney live action. Although, I generally like Disney (animation or live action), so I'll likely give it a chance.

Out of curiosity, who wrote the original Snow White. With all the retellings springing up, I'm thinking I'd like to read the original.

Diane Reed I saw a magazine advertisement for the film Snow White and the Huntsman and a trailer on the web--looks like Hollywood is pouring a LOT of money into it with actresses like Charlize Theron and Kristin Stewart. Hopefully they'll capture the magic and nuances at the heart of the fairy tale and it won't be just an overblown production.

I'm not sure if anyone knows who created the first "Snow White" story, as it would have been passed down orally. But the Brothers Grimm recorded the German version of the story, so you could start by finding a faithful translation.

Krista (findyourshimmy) | 16 comments Thanks, Jennifer. I'll check out Grimm. I'm pretty sure I recently downloaded a free collection of their work. I'll see if it's included there. :o)

Cierra (itscierraduh) | 2 comments I look forwoard to seeing all of them. I'm a fan of all versions of fairy tales honestly. I'm also not a big fan of Kristen Stewart ether though but I really do love Charlize. I just keep thinking to myself of all the people in the world to play Snow White they picked Kristen Stewart...

message 9: by Diane (new)

Diane Reed You're right--I never would have pictured Kristin Stewart for Snow White! Ginnifer Goodwin plays Snow White in Once Upon A Time, and she nails it whether it's during the fairy tale portion or the modern day portion of the show. She has the porcelain skin and innocent look to her features that you might expect, but she also has a wit and intelligence that make you respect her. A lot of that comes down to the good writing of the show--they do a great job of keeping it from being too saccharine : )

I agree with you, Ginnifer is the best live action, modern Snow White I've ever seen. I don't have high hope for Snow White and the Huntsman...Kristen Stewart just really really bothers me. Charlize looks awesome in it though, and I do love her, so I'll probably see it.

message 11: by Diane (new)

Diane Reed I'm rather excited that they cast Charlize Theron for the Evil Queen, because although she is heart-stoppingly beautiful, she can be truly ferocious as an actress. Everyone recognizes the Cruella DeVille types from a distance, but I'm hoping Charlize can portray the kind of evil that is charming, intoxicating, and deadly as all get out...the most dangerous of all.

Danielle The Book Huntress (gatadelafuente) | 4 comments I think Ginnifer Goodwin definitely makes a good Snow White. I don't see Kristen Stewart as Snow White at all, but the movie looks like it might be good.

I'm not a big Julia Roberts fan, so I'm not sure how much I'll enjoy the other Snow White movie.

The one set in Hong Kong might be interesting.

message 13: by Athena (new)

Athena Grayson I dunno. I have little hope for Kristin Stewart, but then too, in the Disneyfied/Bowdlerized version, most of Snow White's story comes from her being pretty much dead wood to attract her man... ;)

OTOH, Snow White has always been about maturity being threatened by youth, especially in women's matters, and KS might be a very subtle subtextual nod to our celebrity culture that values youth and stardom uber alles. Especially since Charlize has always had more than enough of the chops to hold her own in meaty parts while still looking like starlet material.

Ginnifer Goodwin is just made of cute, though. in a kickassy sort of way.

The Hong Kong seven version might be interesting, but if it's a ripoff or mashup of Akira Kurosawa's Seven Samurai, I'll be annoyed.
