Dawn (Kat N Hat) (katnhat)
Here we go again!

The general rules of Scattergories are you are given a list of categories and a time limit. Then the letter dice is rolled and you have to come up with something that matches your letter and the category.

This “Challenge” works in conjunction with the other challenges you may participate in this month. You may use a book to fulfill multiple items (you don't have to read 12 books this month...don't worry!) While you are fulfilling the requirements of your other challenges, be on the lookout for the following items (they may be on the cover or mentioned in the book):

The Challenge: I will post a list of 12 categories, 6 general relating to any book, and 6 specific to that month. On the last day of the month before, I will post the letter of the month. You can start reading on the 1st. The goal is to get as many points as possible by the end of the month.

Duration: January 1st to January 31st

Rules
1.Any genre of books will work
2.Ebooks and audio count
3.You can read in any order
4.Rereads are ok but if you really reread the book

Points: You get one point for each category you can tie to a book, where the first letter begins with the letter of the month. You get double points for each time the letter of the month is used to begin a word (ex. for author if the letter was C, Cassandra Claire would be 2 points). We will not be deducting points for duplicate answers like the original game version does.

Special categories are open for interpretation. As long as it is mentioned in the book and you can justify how it fits, it will work.

When you find one of the items list the Book Title and Author (or link the cover), date it, and specify where the item is found within the book.

Just like the regular game we will not use the letters Q, U, V, X, Y and Z.

Let me know if you have any questions.

message 20: by Lisa Kay (new)

Lisa Kay (lisakayalicemaria) I have questions. . . Does Enchanted, Inc. (Enchanted, Inc. #1) by Shanna Swendson have a white enough cover? How about How to Murder a Millionaire (Blackbird Sisters Mystery, #1) by Nancy Martin . If we have multiple white covers, should we post them all for points? Also, do the "hobby" and "manly" and "loud" etc. have to be connected with a "W"? I was surprised at the number of times I ran across "manly" - but there wasn't a "W" for miles. Please check out what I posted.

message 21: by Dawn (Kat N Hat) (last edited Jan 02, 2012 07:31PM) (new)

Dawn (Kat N Hat) (katnhat) Yes I would take the White from the cover, no matter how small. But to get extra points it needs to be all tied together from the same cover/book. You don't get two points for two books you would get two points from some thing with 2 W's like white wall tires.

message 22: by Dawn (Kat N Hat) (last edited Jan 02, 2012 07:41PM) (new)

Dawn (Kat N Hat) (katnhat) Lisa, it does have to be connected somehow to the W. But the point is to think outside the box. It doesn't have to be as plain as a loud wailing noise, "loud enough to wake the dead", is a loud-W to me. So I think the things you found work.

Dawn (Kat N Hat) (katnhat) Can I get some feed back, please? Do you guys like the time frame? I've noticed we all seem real gun-ho the first of the month and occasionally there are some stragglers that we find later in the month, but not a lot of points. What would you all think about shortening to a 2 week challenge? Or would you prefer more categories? Or do you like it just the way it is?

Lisa Kay (lisakayalicemaria) I didn't get all the categories... but I got some of them twice. Do you count them if we did them twice?

message 45: by Dawn (Kat N Hat) (new)

Dawn (Kat N Hat) (katnhat) No, it doesn't count if it is from two different locations.

for example on your new list you have welcome wagon and new wife, each from a different book. I only counted the "Welcome wagon" since it has 2 words that begin with W so you get two points for it instead of the one you would get from "new wife".

You can replace items but not count more than one item location. So if you had found the "new wife" first then later came across the "welcome wagon" you can remove the "wife" and change it to "welcome wagon" to increase your points.

Does that make sense or am I over explaining?

message 46: by Lisa Kay (new)

Lisa Kay (lisakayalicemaria) Nope, you're not over explaining! Makes perfect sense, Dawn. Thanks!

Lisa Kay (lisakayalicemaria) Finally, I'm getting to Iron Kissed (Mercedes Thompson, #3) by Patricia Briggs and there are "W"s all over the place! Unfortunately, I don't think I'll finish in time. Less than 9 hours to go.

Unfortunately there is no W word with your red. I know how frustrating it is to find one with out the other. Thinking outside the box you could go with a Russet Wolf, if you've got one. Or something that is another shade of red.
