happy (happyone) | 2782 comments Spring weather - I talked about the snow Monday, yesterday it was 6o degrees and the snow is more than half gone. There is more snow/rain in the forecast for tomorrow and the weekend.

happy (happyone) | 2782 comments Silly me, I thought it was Spring
Woke up to 6 inches of snow on the front lawn -again.

Nice thing about spring snow - it melts fairly quickly.
Some of the neighbors are already experiencing basement flooding. Rising water tables - the streams are not at flood stage...yet.

Is this an unusual spring pattern? Our seasons down here are all over the place at the moment.

happy (happyone) | 2782 comments Oh, yeah. I live in Utah and technically on the edge of a desert. Most years, the last snow is in early March and snow pack stops accumulating by the end of March. While, March and April are wettest months, the temps are running about 15 degrees F or so cooler than normal, so our Spring rains have been snow. This last series of storms have added more than 6 feet to the snowpack n the mountains. This winter has really, put a dent in the drought :)

The Ski resorts won't close this year due to lack of snow, but lack of customers :) The tourists are done and the locals get spoiled with the powder snow we get and don't like this kind of wet, heavy spring snow. For the most part won't go.

Jim Wallis (jimthething) | 3 comments Just reading the comments about the ongoing long winter. Thought I’d add my two penneth…
I’m on the northeast coast of England. We’ve had some fine weather interspersed with days of rain. There’s been a breeze coming in off the sea for a couple of weeks now that makes it very chilly outdoors for what should feel more springlike!
Fingers crossed that May brings a bit of heat and sunshine.

happy (happyone) | 2782 comments Here in Utah, we are just about out of the runoff season and inspite of everyone's fears, there has just been minor flooding ( although if it your basement, I don't think you consider it minor :)). The temps have been just about perfect for bring the snow down gradually.

There have been quite a few landslides in the canyons however. A few homes have been destroyed and the road up to Alta and Snowbird Ski resorts has been closed a couple of time.

Marilyn (mbk1857) | 415 comments Here in So California the weather has discovered “Oh! It’s Summer! Let’s pour it on!” The price we must pay for living in paradise. Utah makes a close second. But the have snow. 😊

Michelle (michellehartline) | 237 comments It's hot and humid as heck today in southeastern Virginia. You could cut the humidity with a knife. Snow right now would be excellent :)

message 17610: by Marilyn (new)

Marilyn (mbk1857) | 415 comments I spent 10 years in East Texas. I do not miss the summer humidity. Visiting family is contained between late October and April 30. Strictly contained.

May (mayzie) | 968 comments I’m in Seacoast NH. Heavy, gusty winds during Hurricane Lee. Probably some serious surf & erosion. Then torrential rains all day Monday!!

Ace (aceonroam) | 19 comments Hi gang 👋 been ages since I have been here, look at those cobwebs! After many years of travel I have bought a house and settled down! I have a multitude of places to sit and read and nap :D
I'm not reading much ancient works lately but keen to pick up a few here and there.
I've recently read these fine novels, although Cursed Bread sways so far from it's title topic, it won't be for everyone!
Stone Blind by Natalie Haynes Stone Blind (Medusa)
Edenglassie by Melissa Lucashenko Edenglassie (1854/2024 Australian indigenous author)
Cursed Bread by Sophie Mackintosh Cursed Bread (1955 France)

happy (happyone) | 2782 comments I don't if I should reintroduce myself or not - I've been drafted into helping care for my aging father and his wife :) (not really drafted, I volunteered, I live about a mile from him and it gives me something to do during my retirement)

Between watching Dad and my walking regimen my reading has been drastically cut back though.

I an starting one of my New Years Resolutions early - Check in with Good Reads at least once a week :)

I hope everyone here had a Merry Christmas (or 25 Dec) and has a wonderful New Year!

happy (happyone) | 2782 comments I'll try and not be a stranger :)

I think my car can get to the SLC VA hospital (about 40 minutes away) on its own now. It seems Dad has an appointment every other week for something. We took his keys away and I am the chief of transportation for them.

His memory is going and it is really sad to watch. He used to be a reader and was a school principal. He recognizes people who he sees often, but he can't remember what happed 5 minutes ago.

He IS 87 and has been on borrowed time since 1972. That said his heart and general health are pretty good. His wife's mind is fine, but her heart (among other things) is failing. Between the two of them there is about one complete person :)

May (mayzie) | 968 comments It’s hard watching a parent lose touch with their surroundings, friends & family. I’ve had close friends say that it felt like losing their loved one twice.

Happy, I hope you & your Dad can share some joy on your car rides.
Hugs to you & yours 🤗

message 17638: by Micaylah (new)

Micaylah (micaylah-michelle) | 7 comments So I didn't make my Annual Challenge. I think that's a first. And I failed by a lot. gak

There were too many eye surgeries this year (3). And I've discovered I don't like audible books. I should note that I don't usually count any research books I read.

This year, I'm starting lower. If I get there early, I'll just up it again. But 2024 hasn't started well already.

My rescue puppers had a stroke 3 days ago. So far, she's improving slowly, but we're exhausted. Her hind end is very wobbly, and she needs 24 hr supervision right now. That includes going out to do her business. She's not in pain, though. of course, this is better than Saturday when she had no control over her back legs at all.

She's a tough girl, part Silky and Yorkie Terrier. 11 lbs. And of day this happened, it started snowing. Green up till now, so it's twice as hard for her to go outside. I'm not complaining here; I'm a bad Canadian and hate snow and cold.

So I'll try to keep up this year, but I have a couple more surgeries to go. FML

Hope y'all had a good holiday season.

happy (happyone) | 2782 comments Dogs are just one more member of the Family. The hardest thing I ever had to do was make the decision to put "Otis" down. All of our other dogs have gone naturally, before we HAD to make that decision.

More on my Dad - he spends his day puttering. Today he swept (there was not enough to shovel) his driveway and walks of snow 3 times while I was there ( about 6 hrs or so). We had a total of maybe 2 inches, tops in that time frame.

When it is not snowing, he pulls weeds, not just his yard but every yard in the neighborhood. His neighbors are really good about it, and kind of get a kick out of it.

May (mayzie) | 968 comments Happy, this is hard to watch, I’m sure. Glad his neighbors are kind enough to let him do his thing. What are you doing to take care of you? Sending hugs 🤗

message 17643: by happy (new)

happy (happyone) | 2782 comments Tnx for the hugs. Yeah it is hard to watch. Luckily, my siblings are also very near, so we trade off "babysitting". I have the "duty" twice a week or so. Since I'm retired, I do have the time and I am happy (no pun) to do it.

Michelle (michellehartline) | 237 comments Who was the leader, Marilyn? Now you have me curious.

I have been binging on military science fiction lately, (I'm one of those binge and mood readers), so I haven't been present here very much.

Although I did get to read the eARC of Bernard Cornwell's upcoming Sharpe book Sharpe's Command. That was fun!
