DARK ROMANCE | 11 comments Anyone know any good fantasy books/series that deal with the subject of reincarnation? Maybe in an Asian setting?

Thanks. :)

Shadow Jubilee (uhqs) Katharine Derr's Deverry series. Have you read them? Not Asian setting though

The Last Herald-Mage trilogy by Mercedes Lackey.

Jim (jimmaclachlan) Steven Brust's Vlad Taltos series has some reincarnation in it. I can't say much about it without a spoiler, but it isn't a huge theme, but a fairly important one.

Carolyn (seeford) | 61 comments I really enjoyed the Deverry series! Another book with a prominent theme of reincarnation is The Art of Racing in the Rain - a ways off the beaten path from regular fantasy, however. I loved it though, so I highly recommend it!

Jim (jimmaclachlan) I'll second The Art of Racing in the Rain as an excellent read. It's a life story told from the dog's POV. My review is here:

Brandt The Wheel of Time deals with reincarnation.. Hard to be elaborate without spoiling it though..
It's a pretty big piece of the plot, and several of the characters have, if not all being reincarnated as such, some connection to former lifes..
Have only read to the sixth so far, but the series is definately worth a recommendation..

Melani Lord of Light, doesn't that have reincarnation themes? Sort of kind of?

message 9: by Kate (new)

Kate | 42 comments One of the plotlines in The Fionavar Tapestry is related to reincarnation.

Carolyn (seeford) | 61 comments I've had The Years of Rice and Salt on my tbr list for a while now, but I didn't know about the reincarnation angle - that's moving it way up on the priority list now. Thanks for the detailed info Nicki!

message 11: by Traci (new)

Traci Not Asian but with a reincarnation theme, The Hundred Thousand Kingdoms. Can't say more because even recommending it is kind of a spoiler.

Thank you. :) I have the Herald Mage Trilogy on my TBR. And no, I haven't heard of the Deverry series, but it sounds interesting.

*Jawdrop* WOW! That sounds like a must read! Thank you very much. XD

Thank you! :) I'll definitely add it to my list.

Jim (jimmaclachlan) Melani wrote: "Lord of Light, doesn't that have reincarnation themes? Sort of kind of?"

You're correct in fact, but I think it misses the spirit of what most people think of as reincarnation. Minds are transferred wholesale into new bodies & the only karma is what the current politics dictate. It is an awesome book, though. One of my very favorites of all time.

Will Macmillan Jones (willmacmillanjones) | 164 comments Jim, thou art a man of taste.

Anyone who hasn't read Lord of Light should do so. A masterclass in how to write a fantasy, IMO.

(By the way it won more awards than most people could fit in a cupboard)

message 18: by Melani (new)

Melani I read it so long ago and when I was far to young to apreciate it, I was seven or eight I think, but it has definitely stayed with me in ways that other books I read at the same time have not. I keep meaning to go back and re-read it.

message 19: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) Thank you, Will. Roger Zelazny is definitely my favorite writer. He was amazingly well read & had a subtle humor that complimented his outrageous ideas. As much as I like most of his novels, his short stories really shined. Over the past 2 years, I bought the 6 book NESFA "Collected Works of Roger Zelazny" & the bibliography. It's great & Chris Kovachs, one of the editors, is a member of the Zelazny group here on GR, so he can always fill in any blanks.

Melani, you should re-read it!
;-)

Zeeduck I have a question please;*]. I'm looking for a fantasy tetralogy series that I read a long time ago and cannot remember the names of any of them unfortunately, lol. The first book is about a green/blue eyed witch whose being tortured and a young captain named Wil is forced to watch. He tries to save her but fails. In her gratitude, she bestows a "gift" to him that when he is killed, he will become the person who kills him. I thought the first book was called Merriam's Gift or something like that, but I cannot find it. The author is a woman and unfortunately, I can't remember her name either. Is anyone familiar with this series and can provide me with either the author's name or names of any of the books please? Thank you so much!!;*]

Why don't you try the group called 'What's the Name of That Book?' here on Goodreads.

message 22: by Michelle (new)

Michelle Thomas (michelle-thomas) Myrren's Gift (The Quickening)by Fiona McIntosh is the first book she is on Amazon and the books come both in Paperback and Kindle

message 23: by Zeeduck (new)

Zeeduck Lol just figured it out-the first book is called Myrren's Gift, by Fiona McIntosh. The series is called The Quickening. I truly recommend it-very good reading;*]

message 24: by Zeeduck (new)

Zeeduck I'm sorry I did not see your comment Michelle, prior to mine own about Myrren's Gift, and for that I apologize. It is also a trilogy not a tetralogy, so again, I apologize. Obviously, my memory is completely shot lol.;*]. Sandra, I will look into that thank you so much;*]

I Absolutely love Katherine Kerr's Deverry series, there are a lot of books, but its worth the time.
If you are wanting books about reincarnation these books are pretty much based on it and the author does a great job of explaining the world/magic system.
I think its time for a re-read :)

message 26: by Christopher (new)

Christopher Preiman | 22 comments Michael Moorcock's books all have a strong theme of reincarnation.
