Wodehouse cracks me up discussion

Hello all! I am new to goodreads and a diehard Jeeves fan. I've just posted a quiz about Jeeves and Wooster...any takers?

not fair: one of the questions had a double answer

Every time a couple breaks up in one of his novels, Wodehouse says they "parted brass rags". I've wondered about the derivation of "parted brass rags" for years and didn't know where to find the answer.

Now that I've found this group, maybe I'll finally find the answer. So how 'bout it? Does anyone know?

L.T., a quick Internet search suggested the British Navy is at the root of it, as is so often the case.
