Karen | 120 comments Well, I've started reading Touching Distance by James Cracknell , and I've got to admit, I've cried reading this book. I never realised just how much of a struggle it is to deal with a family member who has a traumatic brain injury (TBI).

message 153: by Karen (new)

Karen | 120 comments Well, Touching Distance by James Cracknell managed what no other book has done for a long time. It made me cry, and I have to admit it was a riveting read. I'm now onto the The Hundred-Year-Old Man Who Climbed Out of the Window and Disappeared by Jonas Jonasson , as I need a "take you brain cell out" book, and from all the reviews, it should be a real laugh.

Sam (VanillaFountain) | 577 comments Mod
Sounds like you need a laugh after Touching Distance by James Cracknell Karen :) I'm just over 20% into The Hundred-Year-Old Man Who Climbed Out of the Window and Disappeared by Jonas Jonasson and it's made me laugh a couple of times. Reminds me a bit of Forrest Gump :)

That was quick reading!

Karen | 120 comments Bit of a book worm I'm afraid - don't watch much TV at home, and refuse point blank to stare at a computer screen after I finish work, so the Kindle has been my life saver. Have to admit that I am enjoying The Hundred-Year-Old Man Who Climbed Out of the Window and Disappeared by Jonas Jonasson , as it's made me giggle a couple of times...

I started it last year but I had group reads to get on with so I put it down but now that I've read The Hundred-Year-Old Man Who Climbed Out of the Window and Disappeared by Jonas Jonasson and I almost had to have Night (The Night Trilogy #1) by Elie Wiesel Night pried from my fingers last night (I'll probably get on with it tonight but it is a harrowing subject so I might leave it a day) I might just start The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks by Rebecca Skloot The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks:)

so on my way to find The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks The Immortal Life Of Henrietta Lacks by Rebecca Skloot after finishing Night but on my way through my kindle I found The Illustrated Man by Ray Bradbury The Illustrated Man. So it all came down to 'l' before 'm' order lol.

Karen | 120 comments Finished the The Hundred-Year-Old Man Who Climbed Out of the Window and Disappeared by Jonas Jonasson , and am now reading Priestess of the White (Age of the Five, #1) by Trudi Canavan . Forgotten how good this book is!

message 161: by Michelle (new)

Michelle | 30 comments Now reading The Golden Acorn (The Adventures of Jack Brenin, #1) by Catherine Cooper . So far, so good, although it is a simple read. I'm not against reading young adult books so I'll stick with it. I'm guessing it's meant to be a YA book.

I've heard mixed reviews about the later Eragon books.. some absolutely loved them and others hated the ending! So I am looking forward to seeing what they entail. I am almost finished with Eldestand have enjoyed it so far. I too wasn't impressed with the later Hunger Games books (well, any of them actually - it's the first time that i've liked the film more than the book!) but I did think the idea of the story was fantastic. :) I have Beautiful Creatures on my wishlist.. maybe I should refrain from reading them now!

message 164: by Karen (new)

Karen | 120 comments Well, I finished the Age of Five trilogy ( Priestess of the White (Age of the Five, #1) by Trudi Canavan , Last of the Wilds (Age of the Five, #2) by Trudi Canavan & Voice of the Gods (Age of the Five, #3) by Trudi Canavan , then read then decided to read War Stories by Jeremy Bowen . Then I needed something a little lighter, so I read A Street Cat Named Bob How One Man and His Cat Found Hope on the Streets by James Bowen . This made me cry in parts, and I just hope that James manages to get his life back together. Now gone back to a real blast from my reading past - The Hunt for Red October (Jack Ryan, #4) by Tom Clancy ... Just wish I could get the rest of the Jack Ryan books on Kindle!

message 165: by Michelle (new)

Michelle | 30 comments Well, I stopped reading The Golden Acorn (The Adventures of Jack Brenin, #1) by Catherine Cooper because it was too juvenile and I figured I have plenty of other books to read, so why waste my time.

So, now I'm reading Brilliant Devices (Magnificent Devices #4) by Shelley Adina . It's the last in the series, so that's a little sad.

Karen | 120 comments Gone back to a series that I loved in a "tree book" - the Patricia Briggs series - Mercy Thompson ( Moon Called (Mercy Thompson, #1) by Patricia Briggs , Blood Bound (Mercy Thompson, #2) by Patricia Briggs , Iron Kissed (Mercy Thompson, #3) by Patricia Briggs , Bone Crossed (Mercy Thompson, #4) by Patricia Briggs , Silver Borne (Mercy Thompson, #5) by Patricia Briggs , River Marked (Mercedes Thompson, #6) by Patricia Briggs & Frost Burned (Mercy Thompson, #7) by Patricia Briggs ) - so that's my next few books spoken for!

*Grin*

I love this series! I'd like to read the latest one, but I refuse to give Amazon (really, the publisher, I suppose) $13 for a digital copy.

message 175: by Karen (new)

Karen | 120 comments Ouch! $13?? The UK has it for £4.99 (not too bad I suppose). Good book though - never thought I'd see the outcome though. Not saying any more, as I don't want to spoil it for people who've not read it. Gone back to the non-fiction this time - a book for any music fan - I am Ozzy by Ozzy Osbourne - as funny as hell. How this man is still walking & talking is beyond me, but I really enjoyed it. So now back to an old favourite - The Firebrand by Marion Zimmer Bradley - just a book that I adore (and needed a little light relief after Ozzy!)

I'm currently re-reading Ian Fleming's James Bond books. Finished Casino Royale by Ian Fleming and Live and Let Die by Ian Fleming , and I'm currently reading Moonraker by Ian Fleming .

Also on the go is Dead Over Heels An Aurora Teagarden Novel by Charlaine Harris . I'm enjoying the series, although it's a little bit pedestrian at times. Some of them keep you guessing, though, so they're worth a read if you like Charlaine Harris.

As I can't take my kindle to work I bought Various Pets Alive and Dead by Marina Lewycka (that's Various pets alive and dead by Marina Lewycka for anyone on phone/iPad) to read. Little disappointed, i didn't enjoy it as much as some of her previous books.

message 179: by Karen (new)

Karen | 120 comments Finished reading The Firebrand by Marion Zimmer Bradley , and have just started reading the Giordano Bruno series by S. J. Parris. It's a cracking series, and I'm hoping that book 2 ( Prophecy (Giordano Bruno, #2) by S.J. Parris ) is as good as the first book - Heresy (Giordano Bruno, #1) by S.J. Parris .

Karen | 120 comments Guess it's time to update the reading files... I've now read Prophecy (Giordano Bruno, #2) by S.J. Parris , and then moverd rapidly on to Beyond the Limit by Sid Watkins . Then it was on to a book I've meant to read for a while - Seraphina (Seraphina, #1) by Rachel Hartman . Then it was on to a book that has been calling to me like a siren (no pun intended, I promise) to Black Coke by James Grenton - the scampered off to The Running Man by Stephen King - the only thing the book and the film have in common is the murderous game and the title. Then it was off to Shadow of Night (All Souls Trilogy, #2) by Deborah Harkness - can't wait for the final part of this series! Then it was back to the non-fiction, and read Worm The First Digital World War by Mark Bowden . Bit of a let down as the Worm in question didn't (or should that be hasn't) really done anything... Then it was back to the alternative side of fiction, and read Deadly Hearts (Descent, #0.6) by S.M. Reine , followed by Dire Blood (Descent, #5) by S.M. Reine and finished off with Defying Fate (Descent, #6) by S.M. Reine - again, can't wait for the next book in the series. Currently reading The Hot Zone by Richard Preston - I've read this before, but it's a damned good book, just not for the squeamish.

I've just moved to the U.S. and was surprised to see that some kindle books are more expensive

message 189: by Karen (new)

Karen | 120 comments Finshed The Left Hand of God (The Left Hand of God, #1) by Paul Hoffman , and won't bother with the rest of this series. Not good as far as I'm concerned. However, found a real corker of an author - J R Rain. His writing reminds me of Jim Butcher, and I really enjoyed the Knighthorse series ( Dark Horse (Jim Knighthorse, #1) by J.R. Rain , The Mummy Case (Jim Knighthorse, #2) by J.R. Rain & Hail Mary (Jim Knighthorse series, #3) by J.R. Rain ). Can't wait for the next book in the series! And now I'm reading Born to be Riled by Jeremy Clarkson . Perfect "take your brain out" reading - especially after a bad day in the office. Nost sure what the next book will be, as I'm desperately trying to avoid reading the John le Carré Smiley series....

Having read 'tinker tailor soldier spy' I would recommend putting off John le Carre for as looooong as possible!

I've been reading the rest of Ben Aaronovitch's books after Rivers of London and loving them, 'whispers underground' reminded me a little of something Neil Gaiman might write.

message 191: by Karen (new)

Karen | 120 comments Still resisting the John le Carre books! Succumbed to a series that I read years ago - the Chronicles of the Necromancer The Summoner (Chronicles of the Necromancer, #1) by Gail Z. Martin , The Blood King (Chronicles of the Necromancer, #2) by Gail Z. Martin , Dark Haven (Chronicles of the Necromancer, #3) by Gail Z. Martin & Dark Lady's Chosen (Chronicles of the Necromancer, #4) by Gail Z. Martin ) Then it's probably going to be something like The Inside Track by Jake Humphrey , as this has also been calling to me!.

Also got the Whispers Under Ground (Peter Grant, #3) by Ben Aaronovitch , as this was a £0.20 purchase on my Kindle, so that's also on the reading list!

Don't believe the 'European Gone Girl' hype, because it's not. Interesting idea but hated the characters
