So when are we all going to read Eragon? Aren't there like 5 people in this group that wanted to read it? Let's set a date. It can be months from now - it doesn't matter. Then we can talk about it here with (view spoiler)

message 2: by April (new)

April | 570 comments <3! Well...I'm gonna finish WH up here in the next week...so I've got Feb. and March with undecided reads? I'll just pick something, unless we choose then to do the Arthurian book read? I'm thinking...May (or even June) for Eragon... That's my thoughts? But I'm pretty flexible!

message 3: by Thalia (new)

Thalia (thaliaanderson) | 359 comments Eragon is one of my books for a February challenge (read a book where the main character has a pet, OTL), so I need to read it this month, although I'll be happy to participate in any discussions we'll have about it later. (: I'm just going to read Demonglass, but I'm pretty sure that'll be finished either tonight or tomorrow (and I haven't even gotten it yet, hahah), and then I'll be starting Eragon. (:

message 4: by April (new)

April | 570 comments If anyone else is up for starting it right away, I can do that before Jessica and I attempt, nay...READ! Paradise Lost! No reason for the kneeling guy, Thalia...She IS his pet! :)...hmmm or maybe it should be a pet that has a human read??? ! Anyway...I'm reading a couple of non-fiction with WH, so once I finish WH, I can totally put Eragon on my 'fun' reads!

message 5: by Thalia (new)

Thalia (thaliaanderson) | 359 comments Woo hoo! Eragon, here we come. (:

message 6: by April (new)

April | 570 comments Alrighty...all jump on the dragon train! Thalia and I are starting on Monday (or right round there)...if you guys need to wait, we'll promise to hide all spoilers! Yiipeeee...cause I know how! :)

message 7: by Thalia (new)

Thalia (thaliaanderson) | 359 comments Hahha, woot for HTML! (:

Jessica (Books: A true story) (booksatruestory) | 490 comments Mod
Okay, I'm going to read Eragon right after I finish Hunchback of Notre Dame. That could take me any where from 5 days to um...3 weeks. I will go as fast as I can! That guy puts me to sleep sometimes. I have been getting marvelous rest the last few days...

message 9: by Thalia (new)

Thalia (thaliaanderson) | 359 comments I'll be starting it either tonight or tomorrow! But probably tomorrow so I can at least give my heart a little time to rest after finishing Demonglass and feeling all my insides explode, hahah. Just let me know when you guys start, too. (:

message 10: by April (new)

April | 570 comments Looking at Tuesday (maybe Wed.)...had some computer 'issues' that I had to work on today during reading time, blah! But this week FOR SURE!

Jessica...if you get Huchback done in three days, you're AMAZING! :)

Looking forward to the discussion!:)
Hope there's at least something saucey or annoying or fabulous to talk about!

message 11: by Jessica (new)

Jessica (Books: A true story) (booksatruestory) | 490 comments Mod
If you can't find anything saucey or annoying PLEASE talk about the movie! LOL

message 12: by Thalia (new)

Thalia (thaliaanderson) | 359 comments ^^^
SERIOUSLY.

I saw the Eragon movie before I had the book, right when it first came out. I remember thinking it was a really decent movie and was really angry when it ended on a cliffhanger and my friend was like, "OH YEAH, it's a trilogy, lololol."

And then I read the book and I was like, "Well, that about the worst book-to-movie adaption EVER." Could it have been anymore inaccurate? XD

message 13: by April (new)

April | 570 comments I heard the movie was NOTHING like the book! I may have seen it A LONG TIME ago...but don't remember ANY of it...So after the read, it'll be a fun movie to get out with the boys...my 10 year old is on Brisingr...and he's been dying for me to read Eragon...so he's quite happy with you folks for getting me to it! :) Looking forward to it!
Oh, and I do love bashing movies for not being like books...so that's a huge plus!

message 14: by Thalia (new)

Thalia (thaliaanderson) | 359 comments I'm page thirteen or something of Eragon. I remember why it took so long to read it the first time around...there's SO MUCH description and not a lot of action. I mean, Tolkein does the same thing, but with Tolkein I'm seriously interested in it. XD Right now I'm like, trudging through. Alas, I hope I get to the "meat" of the story soon!

We can be snarky about bad movies as well as books. (;

message 15: by April (new)

April | 570 comments I'm with you...I stopped on around page 230 or something and shelved it for later....it was VERY difficult to get through...it just couldn't keep my attention because of all the description...but at least now I can complain about it to someone...and I guess if my 10 year old can do it... :) I'll be starting again tomorrow. I've got to finish up WH...almost done!

message 16: by Thalia (new)

Thalia (thaliaanderson) | 359 comments Yeah, since that first time I read it (took me like, three weeks to a month that first time @_@), I keep looking at it on my shelf like, 'I should probably read that...but not now.' I have no excuses now, since I'm reading it with you guys, ahaha.

This is terrible of me, but this is the same reason I never finished Harry Potter. OTL. I got to book three was like, 'TOO MANY DETAILS I DON'T CARE ABOUT!' *throws books across the room* *sigh*

message 17: by Dalynn (new)

Dalynn (dalynnrmc) Not sure when I'll start, but I did get the book (actually the whole series) from my sister this weekend. Probably not today or tomorrow, but definitely will work it in this week.

I usually do really like a lot of description, as long as it's *helpful* description. Funny you bring up Tolkien, Thalia - this Silmarillion has a little TOO MUCH description for my liking. I like to be able to imagine where I am, but with all the silly names and different variations and so many of them being alike, etc... yeah, the notes are needed to follow it. Homework, for reading a novel? Ugh.

So, I'm kind of looking forward to some YA for a little bit. Even considering putting the Tolkien down for a while (GASP!!!) just to get a break in from it. All except I think Beren and Luthien are next. ROFL!

I saw the movie when it came out, also, and that's when I tried to get my oldest son to read it. Sadly, he was way too young to be interested just yet, and I didn't have the chance to read it instead, so we didn't get past... yeah, page 13 sounds about right. HA! I'd heard that the movie was a badly adapted version, but you hear that about a lot of movies, so I figured it was at least close. Maybe not? But it's been a while since I've seen the movie so I'm quite sure neither will ruin the other for me just now.

Looking forward to getting started though! Thanks for the thread! Good idea! <3

message 18: by April (new)

April | 570 comments It's called SKIMMING, Thalia! You can try it here, if the details become to much for you...(although, I can't pracitce what I preach! ugh!) I read every word in the books I'm reading, because I want to know every datail (at least most times!)...I was reading InkHeart and it talks about the three people that read books..devourers; people who read books really fast just to read the book...there was someone in the middle then there were the digesters...yup that's me, read the book and digest every part! So...when it comes to these, I totally feel you in throwing it across the room...with a big, JUST GET TO THE POINT ALREADY! But, we can do it! I know it's a good story, we just have to push through some mires of words at times to get to the magic that resides there! But...I am looking forward to putting some *snark* in where needed! :()

message 19: by Cynthia (new)

Cynthia (ckalthuis) | 16 comments Dalynn- the movie is (in my opinion) one of the worst adaptions of a book. It left out so much that they didn't have a way to continue the series via video.

April- thanks for bringing up Inkheart! I forgot how good it was.

I have read Eragon at least 3 times. It's and even though he is wordy, the important details are repeated so I bet you won't miss anything.

message 20: by Thalia (new)

Thalia (thaliaanderson) | 359 comments April, I read all my books out loud. When you're reading the story that way, there's no way to skim. And then I get all compulsive if I miss details. I've gone back pages to reread single lines that I'm not sure I got right. XD

Is this a new emote? :()
Is that not the same as :O?
Hahaha. (:

Man, I don't even have anything to do right now and I'm staring at Eragon, dreading reading it! x)

Dalynn, I'm not surprised Silmarillion has tons of details, hahaha. Even some of the biggest LotR fans haven't been able to stomach it!

message 21: by Dalynn (new)

Dalynn (dalynnrmc) Talking about re-reading the same pages over again.. I'm doing Silmarillion that way, only I'm re-reading *paragraphs* and sometimes even sentences. Having two toddlers is not turning out to be super conducive to reading Tolkien.

I like it, I do. I'm enjoying it. I just need larger spans of time to be able to enjoy it properly. It's not a book you can read one paragraph at a time. LOL

I'm hoping Eragon will be more conducive to what my life looks like right now, though I'm getting more concerned about my classics TBR for this year. ;) Hope they don't kick me out of Bookish. ROFL!

message 22: by Thalia (new)

Thalia (thaliaanderson) | 359 comments I just noticed that "dreading" is just "reading" with a "d".

Fun fact. (:

message 23: by Dalynn (new)

Dalynn (dalynnrmc) Thalia... lol can you say "procrastinate"?? ;)

message 24: by Jessica (new)

Jessica (Books: A true story) (booksatruestory) | 490 comments Mod
I thought the Eragon movie was Star Wars with Dragons. Like, let's copy the exact same story as Star Wars but they'll ride Dragons instead of X-wings. It was the most predictable movie I've ever seen with some bad acting mixed in. Oh, and it was really cheesy. I hate cheesy movies.

I met Christopher Paolini and he was a nice guy! I'm excited to read his book. Too bad his book got made into a crappy movie.

message 25: by April (new)

April | 570 comments Cynthia! Yes..I loved InkHeart..it ended well enough that it didn't leave me clammoring to get to the second, so I haven't tackeld those yet, but looking forward to it! Very good book!

Thalia..no new emoticon...bad typing:)OTL, LOL! :) . . .and thanks for the fact..but usually it's not ture in my case (at least since college! I read for fun...there usually isn't a D in front of anything...although this challenge is helping with that!)

Oh, and Thalia and Dalynn! Oh DEAR!@! Do I know about going back and RE-reading...ugh...I try and try to skim through boring parts, but then I get to something and I'm like, what...who is that when did they get here...and end up going back and skimming! Grrr... :)
...and yes, it would be hard to do so if your reading out loud...I try to do that with the kids sometimes, and they call me on it every time! :D

Looking forward to reading Eragon so that I can get the movie out and totally make fun of it with my kids! Sounds like a great way to spend a Satuday night:)

message 26: by Hannah (new)

Hannah | 38 comments Okay I will also not that the Eragon books are VERY MUCH like Lord of the Rings as well. Like it's those to stories set in Alagaesia with Dragons. Fantasy style. It's like his tribute or something. :D

I've read all the books and seen the movie.

Haha yeah if you want to watch the movies, yes be warned. It is kinda fun to discriminate a movie that was a horrible replica of the movie. Like Eragon and Percy Jackson.

message 27: by April (new)

April | 570 comments My son was sooo mad that he watched the Percy Jackson movie after reading the book! He said he had a different picture for the characters and in the rest of the books all he could see were the movie people! (although...I didn't have too big a problem picturing Peirce Brosnon (spelling:) when I read them! LOL! Ya, Percy was a bit of a disappointment;P
The worst we've run into so far was the Rats of Nihm. That was really a totally differnt story! But they both had rats that could talk!

message 28: by Hannah (new)

Hannah | 38 comments YES! I know exactly what he means. I did like the actor for Percy and Luke though. But It was just a shame. Why make the movie if you are going to destroy it? It's so loved it's like blasphemy!

Rick riordan hasn't even watched it.

message 29: by April (new)

April | 570 comments If I were an author...and they made a movie out of my book...I wouldn't watch it...you know who you characters are...and usually Hollywood can't compare! :)

message 30: by Thalia (new)

Thalia (thaliaanderson) | 359 comments There's actually an entire thread somewhere on GoodReads on whether or not Paolini copied Lord of the Rings and other works and tried to pass it as his own. I've posted there several times in Paolini's defense and if anybody is curious to read it, I'm sure I could find it again. (:

Fifty-ish pages in. Finally things are interesting! Once the dragon actually becomes a thing, it's much more interesting, hahah.

message 31: by April (new)

April | 570 comments It would be very confusing if you were reading them at the same time...that is for sure! But, the story is one that seems interesting enough and different enough that I'm willing to follow through...and I say...hey, there's no new idea under the sun, just the way you present it...and if Mr. Paolini got his imagination to spark from some of the stuff in LotR...more power to him! He did a great job making it something different and new enough... I won't say what just happened...where I am, because I don't want to spoil..but it's really starting to come easier after a hundred pages or so.... I do get frustrated with Eragon sometimes...he's a bit of a jealous kid!~ But, I heart the exchanged between he and Safira! Lots more action after those first few chapters! I'm very afraid...none of the other three are on my "dusty challenge" list...and I may have to read them! Gahhh... as Dalynn says...reaking havoc on my TBR!

message 32: by April (new)

April | 570 comments Ok..so good thing about Laundromats...extra reading time! :)

I'm really getting into the characters now, and totally sucked in....enjoying it, and on edge...egads! Oh, and I wanna be an elf! Just sayin'!

message 33: by Dalynn (new)

Dalynn (dalynnrmc) I think that if the first book of a series is on your dusty shelf then, by default, the books that follow it are as well. You can't start a series and not continue it. That's reading blasphemy!!!

And I'm worried about starting Eragon while still reading Silmarillion now. ROFL

message 34: by April (new)

April | 570 comments THAT could be a challenge in itself, Dalynn! with all the names and places that sound so similar...I don't envy you that reading challenge:) IF I read more than one fiction at a time..(not counting the kids read aloud for school that we do everyday)...then they have to be totally different in nature...like vampires and dragons...cause you know, they don't go together at all!!! ROFL AM (that's at myself...translation for Thalia! ) Hahahahahahaha!

message 35: by Dalynn (new)

Dalynn (dalynnrmc) LOL!

I'm the same way, about not reading more than one fic at a time (not counting the kids read alouds, and even that I can only handle because it's just a couple of chapters at a time). I do okay if they're totally different. I don't know if I DONT do okay with anything though, because it just bothers my brain to even TRY. Just one of those things.

If I get in another "silent reading day" though, like I did yesterday, maybe I'll finish Silmarillion this weekend and start Eragon Monday, a week behind. Maybe? Or something. We'll see. Again, considering setting down SIlmarillion... just worried about if and when I'll pick it back up and thinking it might be better to just power through it.

I think I might skim the 'details' chapters and just read the fun stories. It'd be a better book with just the fun stories. At least IMHO. (do we need an abbreviations translator, thalia?)

message 36: by Thalia (new)

Thalia (thaliaanderson) | 359 comments April, don't forget the spoiler HTML! I'm at page 107 right now, so I'd like to know what's happening where you're at, hahah. Eragon is a reread for me, so I don't really mind clicking spoiler buttons. (;

But you're right! It takes that hundred or so pages to get situated with it, hahah.

Dalynn, I agree. Reading the first book in a series and never reading the rest? That should be illegal! Even books I HATE, if they're in a series, I force myself through the rest of the way! Then again, I may have a sickness with things like that. (;

LOL, April, thanks for the translation there. (;
Dalynn, I think I can piece together IMHO on my own, hahaha. IMO is a pretty common one and I'm sure the H isn't something crazy like 'in my hippo's opinion' or something, right? x)

message 37: by April (new)

April | 570 comments I can never remember if that H is humble or honest...but really doesn't matter does it...as long as like Thalia said it isn't Hippo! and if it is..well I guess that's pretty cool if you have a hippo:)

I didn't forget..I was just afraid to tempt someone...this was the biggest (view spoiler) But, I was still ok with it...althoug I wish that would have gone differently:) I'm on about page 335, but I won't make it through the rest as fast because I had already read to about page 200...so it was faster getting through that! Although...there's some cool stuff going on!
Theres (view spoiler) !

And...yes...I already knew I'd read all three...but Not sure if it's before or after I get my challenge books done:) If I start those, I might never get back to these dusty ones! :) Eragon is a fun distraction to have a group read with y'all while I'm reading my non-fiction too! Not sure what I'll tackle for March:) Then in April it's on to that big book of poetic phrases that's gonna kill me and Jessica's gonna have to make sure I read at LEAST a page every day! :) :)
Anyway . . . Eragon is definately picking up...and the pages are turning much more easily! Looking forward to see if he leaves an uber cliff-hanger or ends in a place (like InkHeart did) where the others can wait??? Hmmm...

message 38: by April (new)

April | 570 comments ..and thank you again, Thalia...using that little (view spoiler)

message 39: by Thalia (new)

Thalia (thaliaanderson) | 359 comments I'll agree with April; if you have a hippo, I might just have to find you and hug you. (:

April! In regards to spoiler one:
(view spoiler)

Spoiler two!
(view spoiler)

Glad to hear it gets interesting at the end there!

message 40: by April (new)

April | 570 comments OH, I've got a ways to go yet...but it is better...and I don't remember the movie at all (if I did, in fact, see it!) So I have no idea on (view spoiler)

...and yes to the hippo! My kids would LOVE a hippo! How fun would THAT be?!?! :)

message 41: by Dalynn (new)

Dalynn (dalynnrmc) I got a hippo for Christmas, and next time the dog gets out I'm feeding him to it!

I don't know the spoiler HTML. But it doesn't matter cuz i can't get out of Silmarillion to HAVE any spoilers. And not clicking the above spoilers is going. to drive. me nuts.

message 42: by Thalia (new)

Thalia (thaliaanderson) | 359 comments Dalynn it's just like this:
< spoiler >
< / spoiler >

With no spaces. (:

message 43: by Dalynn (new)

Dalynn (dalynnrmc) oooooooh okies :) thanks!

message 44: by April (new)

April | 570 comments Ok..so movin' right along in Eragon! The he and the elf are having some 'brain' conversation and the urgles are catching up fast while we're searching for the Vardon! Achk! I did think it was interesting as my train of thought led to LotR as they started talking about the forest and how dark and old it was...I thought..ok, I do hope no Treebeard comes outta here! But, that didn't happen, so kudos to Mr. Paolini! Enjoying it...got to a boring part ..well, not boring, just cumbersome. Hope to work more this weekend...maybe finish it up...and looking forward to an Arthurian read for March:)! Woot!

message 45: by Adrianne (new)

Adrianne (montanaandi) | 11 comments I tried, but just couldn't get into that series :(

message 46: by Thalia (new)

Thalia (thaliaanderson) | 359 comments Adrianne, I don't blame you, hahah. I'm still trying to buckle down and get down to it!

April, I remember that! If you're looking, you can see some parallels, but not enough to say Paolini directly copied anybody. I applaud him for being so successful! I plan on finishing tonight after the Valentine's dance I'm going to. (:

message 47: by April (new)

April | 570 comments Have fun at the dance...sounds like it's gonna be a late night! :) Looking to get some pages in before LotR! Cause I can't possibly read while Legolas is on my screen! *dreamy sigh!*

message 48: by Thalia (new)

Thalia (thaliaanderson) | 359 comments Hahaha, seriously! (: Legolas *swoon*

I ended up reading like, five pages! I was all set to buckle down and dive in, and then my parents were like, "We recorded the rest of Yentl!" which we started in the morning and didn't get to finish. So I got sucked into to the musical and then was too angry about the ending to read anything else, hahaha. Plus, it was about one in the morning by the time we were done!

As soon as I get home from church...Eragon will be taken down! (:

message 49: by Dalynn (new)

Dalynn (dalynnrmc) I'm only 45 pages from the end of Silmarillion!! YAY! If I don't finish today then definitely tomorrow, so I think Eragon is up for tomorrow for sure! Excited!

message 50: by April (new)

April | 570 comments FINISHED! Woot woot! It does get so much better and the want to go back and read is much greater toward the end! I enjoyed it. I'll wait a bit (because I'll have to get it at the library) for Eldest...but I'm looking forward to see who this mysterious caller ...a cripple who is whole??? and meet him/her in Ellesmera! (view spoiler) But...now onto other things...maybe get another one in before Arthurian month! :)
