I issue this traditional challenge on my blog and I was so excited as I was writing it up that I could extend it to all of you this year. It really is a lot of fun. Below is the information from my blog but you can follow the links at my blog at www.daysofus.blogspot.com
"GINGERBREAD HOUSE CHALLENGE '08!!!" For those of you who are new to the challenge allow me to explain. I issue the challenge. Everyone goes out and makes their house. Here are the rules
No pre-made houses! You can use the kits available at Costco, Walmart and everywhere fun Christmas goods are sold. This is the recipe I used last year for our house and while I didn't eat the house it cooked up really well and CC and the kids did nibble it. Get together with family or friends and decorate, be imaginative, have fun. Take a picture of your finished product and email it to me by 12/20. I will gather all the pictures and post them together on one Gingerbread post. How simple is that? Three rules and one of them is to have fun. Last year we had some GREAT houses that were sent in. My brother Ben's house left something to be desired, namely honesty in creation, but the rest were wonderful. Last year we tried to recreate out house in gingerbread and had a blast doing it. This year I got my inspiration this summer and I knew then what I wanted to do. I cant wait to attempt it and hope it works out.
I also wanted to add that I have seen sheets of Rice Crispy Treats at the stores and if you want to make a Rice Crispy Treat house then that is totally acceptable and I would love to see what can be done with it.
Here is a link to last years Houses of Fun.
I have already recieved some pictures of houses already done! So, in the immortal words of Padma Lakshmi, 'time begins NOW'.
How fun! We have a family Christmas party every year where we have a gingerbread house contest. We have about 70-80 people at the party and my mom makes one house per family. Each family decorates their house and then everyone votes on their favorite. The prize is a quilted gingerbread house wall hanging that the winner gets to display in their house for the year. Each year the winner's names are written on the back and then it's handed down the next year. I think we've been doing since for about 10-12 years. Since we have so many people now, we are considering decorating the houses with scrapbook paper...so my mom doesn't have to make gallons of icing. (we started making the houses out of cardboard a couple years ago when we got up to about 20 houses that my mom was baking and assembling).
ok, I know this is a dumb question, but what do you do with a gingerbread house after the holidays, or are you supposed to eat it as the season goes along???
