Set in North Shields and Tynemouth, Growing Pains is the story of one man’s challenge – to run for prime minister as the leader of the Union Party.
Theo goes on TV show Talk the Talk and, fed up with the rhetoric and self-serving answers, criticises the panel to the point where two MPs walk off the show. The audience love his performance, and at the end of the show, a questioner asks him if he’s going to run for prime minister.
The story moves to his life up to the point of appearing on the show, including his upbringing in Meadowell Estate, North Shields, and it details a heroic act where he ends up with a burned face and hands. A prejudiced comment about the way he looks sends him to depression and he comes out of that wanting to make an impact.
He writes the Common Manifesto, outlining how the country needs to be run in the same way we run homes and businesses. The manifesto includes outrageous policies, and is followed by his unorthodox campaign.
