Sarah | 13814 comments Anybody had any of these beers? They're listed below the photo - 95 categories of award winners for this year.

Pat (patb37) Other than the mass market brands, no.
The list lost its credibility when I saw Old Style and Milwaukee's Best are both winners.

Yikes! Those are some seriously icky beers!

Jammies "Indigenous beer" makes me giggle, and I'm glad to see something from Akron made the list, but since I don't see anything by my brother on there, that's all the interest I have.

Sarah | 13814 comments I saw all those Colorado beers and wondered whether your brother had made it.

To me that speaks to a couple of categories that I just generally find unpalatable. All of the bad American beers in the competition seem concentrated in the categories made for them.
Category 42: American-Style Cream Ale or Lager, 23 Entries
Gold: Prestige, Brasserie Nationale d’Haiti, Port-au-Prince, Haiti
Silver: Old Style, Pabst Brewing Co., Allentown, PA
Bronze: Milwaukee’s Best, Miller Brewing Co., Golden, CO

Category 43: American-Style Lager or Light Lager, 39 Entries
Gold: Coors Light, Coors Brewing Co., Golden, CO
Silver: Michelob Ultra, Anheuser-Busch, St. Louis, MO
Bronze: Michelob Light, Anheuser-Busch, St. Louis, MO

Category 44: American-Style Premium Lager or Specialty Lager, 37 Entries
Gold: Steel Reserve, Miller Brewing Co., Golden, CO
Silver: Evans Original, Cervecería Mexicana, Corona, CA
Bronze: Icehouse, Miller Brewing Co., Golden, CO

What that says to me is that American-Style Lager is synonymous with those weak corporate beers. It's the definition of the category.

He doesn't enter this one, but if he had, his beer would be credited to the brewpub in Dallas.

And you're totally right about the American-style lagers essentially being weak commercial beers.

I don't know... Michelob Ultra isn't that far off from panther piss, but I've had much, much worse and you can slam 'em down pretty quickly if you're faced with a time crunch.

Now if you'll pardon me, I'm late for a AA meeting and my sponsor is a real ballbuster.

Pat (patb37) But why even have categories for american mass market beers? They don't need the publicity. Is is to let beer snobs know which are the least yucky?

Sarah | 13814 comments Natty Boh has puzzles inside the lid too.
