The Universal Mirror by Gwen Perkins Gwen Perkins

Genre: Fantasy

The Universal Mirror

Book Description

On the island of Cercia, the gods are dead, killed by their followers and replaced with the study of magic. Magicians are forbidden to leave their homeland. Laws bind these men that prevent them from casting spells on the living—whether to harm or to heal.

Quentin, a young nobleman, challenges these laws out of love for his wife. His best friend, Asahel, defies authority at his side, unaware that the search for this lost magic will bring them both to the edge of reason, threatening their very souls. The Universal Mirror shows how far two men are willing to go for the sake of knowledge and what they will destroy to obtain it.

Martin (Martins_Library) | 28 comments Sound pretty interesting and The Night Circus has got me in the mood for good takes on magic.

Here is to hoping it isn't aimed towards a more female audience (it isn't, it it?)

Hi Tana, I'm back and ready-ish to receive my copy! Got three books to read for tours first but they're all for this week / early next week and once they're done and dusted I can concentrate this one. =)

Just to let you know that I'm running a little slow with getting started on this one. I'm hoping to read it next week.

message 29: by Elizabeth (new)

Elizabeth Jasper (elizabethjasper) | 16 comments I can usually get right into a book but I found this one very difficult - I'm sure it's just my perception, but as I agreed to review I thought I should give my honest opinion. I am a writer myself and this might be a large part of the reason this book did not work for me - I may be looking at it not solely from the general readers POV.
