White-Out or Liquid Paper is actually called Tip-Ex in the UK? Guess it's like Kleenex, or Tyson, something that doesn't translate. Or something.

message 2: by Dave (new)

Dave Russell It was invented by the mother of Michael Nesmith of The Monkees.

Jackie "the Librarian" | 8991 comments Those crazy Brits don't call anything the right name. Why, there aren't even any plums in plum pudding!

RandomAnthony | 14536 comments I still get confused on exactly what in goddamn hell they call "cookies" over there.

shellyindallas Tyson?

message 8: by Heidi (new)

Heidi (heidihooo) | 10825 comments I like that they call rainboots "rubbers." And I loooove the word "knickers." :)

message 9: by [deleted user] (new)

I gotten my "knickers in a twist" over all of this ;-).

message 10: by Félix (last edited Jan 02, 2009 08:01AM) (new)

Félix (habitseven) I was in a restaurant once where a family from the UK was seated nearby. The server said they had cookies for desert. The little boy said, "Cookies?"
"Biscuits," his Mum replied. "Ah," he said.

And why the hell is the trunk of the car called the "boot"?

message 12: by Félix (new)

Félix (habitseven) and the roof is the "hood" and the hood is the "bonnet."

message 13: by Heidi (new)

Heidi (heidihooo) | 10825 comments Knickers.

Bullocks... what does that even mean? Is it a verb?

message 15: by Félix (last edited Jan 02, 2009 08:34AM) (new)

Félix (habitseven) Buggers. Oh bloody hell.

message 16: by Heidi (new)

Heidi (heidihooo) | 10825 comments I thought it was "Bugger," no "s"... :(

message 17: by Heidi (new)

Heidi (heidihooo) | 10825 comments Knickers. :)

Sally (mrsnolte) | 17373 comments Mod
Heidi, why are you just standing there, saying "panties" to us in British? Are you snickering whilst doing so?

message 19: by Heidi (new)

Heidi (heidihooo) | 10825 comments Knickers. :)

message 20: by Heidi (new)

Heidi (heidihooo) | 10825 comments You know, that scene in Bridget Jones' Diary when Hugh Grant finds Bridget's granny panties, and he makes fun of her knickers is totally sexy to me.

He says "panties," though. :) SHE says "knickers."

message 21: by Félix (new)

Félix (habitseven) "Buggers" is a common expletive. "Bugger" is the verb.

message 22: by Heidi (new)

Heidi (heidihooo) | 10825 comments I've only heard it used in the movies... I was thinking specifically of the beginning of "Four Weddings and A Funeral" when Hugh Grant keeps saying it over and over because he's running late to a wedding. It was more of a question than a statement. Thanks for the info, Larry! You're a fount of knowledge. :)

message 23: by Sarah (new)

Sarah (songgirl7) And it's bollocks, not bullocks. It means testicles, but in slang it's used to mean "nonsense."

message 24: by Sally, la reina (new)

Sally (mrsnolte) | 17373 comments Mod
Thank you! I could not figure out that spelling, and normally Google helps me: "Did you mean to say testicles?" But not in this instance.

message 25: by RandomAnthony (new)

RandomAnthony | 14536 comments Did you mean to say testicles?

That made me laugh. Why yes, I did mean to say testicles! How did you know? Thank you for being so helpful, google!

message 26: by Félix (new)

Félix (habitseven) Bloody bollocks in your knickers.

Jackie "the Librarian" | 8991 comments Eww, Larry.

message 36: by Sally, la reina (new)

That is making unfortunate images appear in my head, Larry.

I agree, :-/ indeed
.

message 37: by Pamela(AllHoney) (new)

Pamela(AllHoney) (pamelap) I'm going bloody bonkers reading this :)

message 38: by Félix (new)

Félix (habitseven) Knickerbockers are men's/boy's baggy, knee-length trousers.

Trousers -- now there's a word they use over there a lot more than we do. As in Wallace and Gromit, The Wrong Trousers.

message 39: by Heidi (new)

Heidi (heidihooo) | 10825 comments I've always thought knickerbockers look like prude baseball player pants. :)

message 40: by Heidi (new)

Heidi (heidihooo) | 10825 comments Oh. And I almost forgot...

Knickers. :)

message 41: by [deleted user] (new)

message 48: by Gåry! (last edited Jan 02, 2009 01:56PM) (new)

Gåry! (garyneill) Fanny is not what you think, it's a mere inch or so away.

message 49: by RandomAnthony (new)

RandomAnthony | 14536 comments You're still drinking eggnog?

message 50: by [deleted user] (new)

I don't think she is she seems to be using as lubricant for her keyboard.
