Paranormal Romance and Urban Fantasy Addicts discussion

My daughter is into paranormal/romance books. She is 10, reads at a high school/ almost college level, and I am out of ideas for her that does not have descriptive sex involved. She has read all of L.J. Smith's and P.C. Cast's. Anyone have suggestions?

basically you need YA books - if you go into the bookshelves in most of these groups they have a section for just YA (young adult)

THEN check with others in the group- "did it have sex" or "if it did have sex in it, was it handled well ?" ( like fade to black instead of anything other than kissing with a hint that something might happen...)

My daughter loves the Glass Houses series. Later in the series there are sex scenes that are camera to the right - she writes the beginning and then changes scenes.

Morganville Vampire series is good, the main character is like 16 but in college. Later is the series there is sex but not detailed.

yeah, Morganville Vampires are more of a movie version (of sex)- where the camera pans to the left with an open window and a breeze blowing the curtains

She has read almost all the books in the high school which means all the YA books. She read too well for me top keep up. Especially when I usually pre-read them all.

Twilight they never actually do it until the last book and even then it's not graphic most kids now by her age kinda at least know where babies come from right? :) I could read Twi over and over :)

Thanks Jennifer but she read those 4 yrs ago and hated the last 2. Though she is more into the movies.

Julie Kenner has a very funny series, Demon-hunting Soccer Mom. It's not YA but there really isn't an sex it in and it's hilarious. It's a little gross at times since to kill a demon she has to put a knife through the eye but it's more funny than anything. The mom, Katie, is a retired demon hunter with 2 kids, I think 12 and 2 (it's been awhile since I've read it). She comes out of retirement when a demon comes crashing through her window and now she's trying to be the mom and hide the fact that she is a demon hunter.

Damn down girl. You must be mistaking cause i sure as hell can't remember ANY sex scenes at all. There has only been the slightest hint of a romance. And i'm on #6 so far.

Lynn kurland books . These ones just have a very old fashioned romance. Nothing sexual. Also who is YA, and only has a few kisses. Robin Mckinley . They're YA, they're retellings of fairy tales, with no sex. Patricia A. Mckillip has some amazing books. I think these two are apropriate for her age: and

It's gonna be hard to find YA PNR that doesn't have more than kissing in it. My son read goosebumps and stuff like that at her age.

She might like the Dark Divine Trilogy by Bree Despain. It's about a Catholic girl who finds out about werewolves. That has no sex in it.

Also, there's the Monster High Series By Lisi Harrison if she wants something really girly.

The Dead is series by Marlene Perez is more of a mystery supernatural series. They are pretty short and no sexual content.

The Percy Jackson series by Rick Riordan might work too. It about Greek mythology and its about a boy and what I have read, no sexual content.

Most of the books mentioned are all released so no waiting for books to be published. (YAY!) Hope she gets an idea.

Thanks everyone. You have given her many choices. I hope it'll be enough to make it through the summer, though I doubt it. She reads a 300 page in 2 days. She always has her nook in her hand. Lol Friday I caught her reading the second chapter of Fantasy Lover by Kenyon. I freaked out.

Some of my favorite YA are:













None of them have graphic sex scenes as far as I remember (haven't finished the soul screamers series yet, but the first few books were definitely without any graphic scenes and I doubt this is going to change).

YA --- Rachel Caine's Morganville Vampires series is AMAZING. Earlier books no sex. And later books not graphic. Not sure I'd recommend for a 10-year-old, but if she's read P.C. Cast's House of Night series (which does have sex in it; first book jumping right in w/ a somewhat graphic sex act when first gets to the school) then it should be fine.

Richelle Mead's Vampire Academy books --- are really good, too. Again... I'd say a bit older than a 10 yr. old, but once again... i found this series tamer than House of Night.

Here's my suggestions:
10, huh? Patrick Carman's Land of Elyon Books are good and age appropriate.

Rick Riordan's Percy Jackson & the Olympian series as well as the Kane series.

Suzanne Collins's Hunger Games trilogy; I haven't read her Gregor books, but heard they are good.

Kelly Armstrong's is pretty good and has NO SEX in it.

Veronica Roth's Divergent series (haven't finished the second book yet to say if any inappropriate material in it.) Lauren Oliver's Delirium Series deals with love in a sort of dystopian way. Interesting premise despite the love triangle. I'd be okay with my 12 yr. old niece reading them.

Not a series... but I'm a fan of Neil Gaiman... Stardust and Neverwhere are both really good. Coraline & The Graveyard Book are age appropriate as well.

Shannon Delany's werewolf series ??? 13 to Life --- to be fair, I haven't finished the series, so I can't say if there is sex in the later books.

Michelle Sagara West's Chronicle's of Elantra series... first book Cast in Shadow --- you might be thinking of a different book; I am reading this series and I am POSITIVE that the first 4 books have absolutely NO SEX in them whatsoever. I'm on Cast in Silence... the 5th book now. So far... no sex.

Michelle Sagara West has a series called Chronicles of Elantra. They are sort of a mixture of police procedural/detective/ fantasy --- lots of different races... each book has a single story, but there does exist a long story arc that is on-going.

This series isn't for everyone, but I really like it.
And it DOES NOT have any sex in it that I can remember. Not really even romance... a bit hinted at perhaps or foreshadowed, but so far... no sex or romance.

Well her soon-to-be-step-mom took the list and plans on getting her at least 4 complete series in the next week hopefully that will keep her reading most of the summer, I hope! You guys have been a great help!

Beastly by Alex Flinn is a good book.
She might enjoy Bad Moonlight by R.L. Stine.

It is ok for her to read everything except sex scenes. House of Night she has read.She has even though she could handle the sex in The Nightwalker series but yelled at me for not telling her there was real sex. LOL

R.L. Stine has some pretty good books.
She might like some of the Fear Street series
like Bad Moonlight & Goodnight Kiss.

Twilight, Vampire Diaries, Stephan's Diaries, Secret Circle, House of Night Series, Night World Series, Witches of Santa Anna, The Inheritance Cycle, Harry Potter, and a few more that I can't remember at the moment. She loves PNR type books and knows all bout sex but just doesn't like reading it though insinuated sex is ok she said. I'm hoping to get her a few suggested series from here in Sept, after school starts. She loves taking her nook to school. Her teachers have always allowed it since she is always the first done with her work and they don't have to find something for her to do.

Try the Lauren Kate series which begins with Fallen and then the Becca Fitzgerald Hush, Hush series; also the Beautiful Creatures series. Kimberly Derting has a mystery/psychic series which begins w/The Body Finder if she likes mystery programs plus it has a great formerly-boy-girl-best-friend-turns-into-romance thing going on which I loved. Ransom Riggs' Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children is odd and eccentric and totally rocks. Alice Hoffman's Green Heart, the Hunger Games trilogy are all great, and coming up the first week in October Kresley Cole has her debut (paranormal romance writer usually)book in the YA genre entitled Poison Princess (Arcana Chronicles #1). Also not to be missed is Lauren Myracle's Shine even though it's not paranormal.
