Tom, welcome to the History Club. I’m currently reading a biography of George Washington in part because I know little of the French and Indian War, which was part of the European Seven Years War. After reading some military books I have to jump around and read something on the lighter side to clear my head.

I have been a bit of a history geek since high school when I read Barbara Tuchman’s, “The Guns of August.” I remember driving to school one day in my old VW bug thinking non-fiction stories were inherently more interesting than fiction because they actually happened. I do occasionally now read fiction, but I still find myself reading history and thinking, wow, you just can’t make stuff up that’s better than this. I lived overseas – Japan and Germany – for a number of years so I guess inevitably am drawn to World War II. The Manchester books on Churchill and the Kershaw books on Hitler are some of my favorites. I’m looking forward to reading your recommendations and reviews and finding more like them.

Hello everyone. I became a history freak after high school, once I found out that history is, in fact, interesting... and it's been a non-stop journey ever since then.

I am mostly interested in historical fiction, some of my favorite novels have been Rabble in Arms by Kenneth Roberts, Spirit Lake by MacKinlay Kantor, and of course, Gone with the Wind by Margaret Mitchell. I am looking for a good excuse to re-read Spirit Lake.

Sitting in front of me are two non-fiction books I hope to read soon -- A History of the Wife by Marilyn Yalom and America's Women: 400 Years of Dolls, Drudges, Helpmates, and Heroines by Gail Collins. As I looked through the extensive list of categories offered here, I couldn't find one for Women in History? American women, especially stories of early American women, are my favorite of all historical genres.

I am relatively new to GoodReads, and very excited to have joined my first group! I am a recent college grad who majored in history. I focused mostly on the late middle ages and the early modern period, particularly the history of science. Since I graduated, I have spent most of my time reading novels, but realized I miss reading and discussing non-fiction. I decided to look into reading groups on here, and voila, here I am! I live and work in Philadelphia, and in my free time I enjoy running, reading (duh), and learning something new. My current project is learning the piano... we'll see how that goes!

Hi All! This is my first time on this site. I studied history at undergraduate level and after completing my Masters and PhD in international Relations I am now a research fellow at the University of York. I have never lost my passion in history and believe it is absolutely essential for better understanding the present. My personal areas of interest are the history of war, international politics and diplomacy. I think my favourite history book remains one I read many years ago for my undergrad degree: A People's Tragedy by Orlando Figes. An utterly absorbing read shifting from personal stories to high level politics.
