I'll kick off this kiki here and say that I am loving it so far. I watched season one of the show already, and now I'm reading the book and watching each episode of the show with the matching chapters, now that it makes more sense or at least has more depth with the text in conjunction.
I really love the writing style, and I appreciate how each character feels different, even when the narration is in third person pov, we still get different types of descriptions. Bran feels young, Sansa feels like a teen bitch. Tyrion feels like ....Tyrion. I loved this sentence I just read in Tyrion's chapter that says "when the serious business of eating was done" Yes. Eating is serious business, I totally agree.
Also I'm going through and doing fanart as I go, using the appearances from the show. You've probably already seen these if you're friends with me here on Goodreads, but oh well.
Jon Snow and Ghost

Joffrey

Littlefinger and Renly

I'll post more when I read more. Only at page 175 rn (I have the giant paperback version.)

I sort of tense up when people talk bad about Sansa, just because of some of the nasty hate that's been directed her way. I think she was naive in this book, but I don't think she was particularly mean. Her and Arya are just such different (and similiar) people that they're always butting heads. I HOPE SOMEDAY they'll be awesome together.
I hope a lot of things.
Funny story, I was reading a stupid webcomic I no longer follow who spoiled that someone got their head cut off at some point during the book and I spent the entire book praying it wasn't so-and-so. I think at one point I was sure it was going to be either Tyrion or Ned, but either way it was painful. (Cos I liked Tyrion at that point).
Well I don't mean Sansa's a huge bitch or anything but she certainly acts all snooty in her perspective. I mean since I know how the end of Season 1 went, I totally am like rooting for her, but in her first chapter she's talking about how Arya ruins everything and how some people aren't highborn and you know, general I'm a teen queen stuff. I enjoy it actually, I think it feels good to have a different voice.
Also I'm worried about Tyrion in other books because I am enjoying him so far, I think he's pretty awesome. I'm afraid to find out what your reasoning is but don't tell me yet.
And yes I am totally going to continue my pictures as I go :)

I think a lot of what I don't like about Tyrion is something that often strikes me with Arya, a few characters you get the impression that they're the Author's favorites so maybe they're right after all and I really don't like that he's the only view point into the narrative of sex workers (we'll discuss this in more detail when you get farther on, I'm sure).
Then again, DINKLAGE! So I forget when I watch the show.
I know, Dinklage kind of negates any argument.
BAMF right there.
i just made this because you said that.

i love the line where Tyrion was joking about "the crabs are here" at the Wall, and then it made me think of Jersey Shore's CABS are here, so....i dunno...

Yes omg I so agree, I loved that! Some of the best lines come from Tyrion chapters, you can tell Martin loves to inject little bits of wittiness in there.

How is that? Are you able to pay attention to the names? I find it would be easier to see it in front of you since there's the map and the appendix to check every now and then.
I'm at Tyrion's 'trail' right now, and this is unrelated, but I just wanted to mention, Mia, since you were talking about this series breaking your spirit and I was thinking about this in the car just now.....I am prepared.
Because I saw Spartacus season 1. There is nothing...nothing...nothing...more spirit breaking than that show. And now, btw, I'm sure it's worse to rewatch it now that Andy is no longer with us, but lordt, after episode 10, I lay on my bed for an entire day and would not come out. I could not function. I don't know what happened to me. And I was one of those people that doesn't like devour a tv show they love, I was watching an episode like once a week to kind of spread it out, so when I put in the blu-ray and was like oh let's have a fun Spartacus day and then THAT happened and I just could not move. Omg.
omg.
even thinking about it hurts.
lol so my senses have already been dulled massively after that. I feel like I can handle anything and since (view spoiler) I feel like I can handle whatever else might happen.Maybe.

I think I realized that I like things that wreck me, because I was looking for a favorite movie to watch or favorite book to read last night to cheer me up and everything I loved was at least slightly devastating.
(Also I heard Spartacus was amazing, but I haven't watched it yet and Netflix took it off)

It's great to see how differently Sansa and Arya would have reacted in that situation and how one of them (Arya) would be dead, lol. Whereas in Arya's plotline the reverse is true. LOVE MY GIRLS AND THEIR PARALLEL ARC.
But srsly people act like because she didn't do that, she's to blame for everything Joff does.

i think you'll pick it up pretty soon, and remember there's an appendix in the back that lists the major characters of the house to aid you!
most of the characters bran introduced are random people that work in the stark household that won't be too important, like the horsemaster and such.
You only need to remember, for now, that Bran introduced on their excursion, is Jon, Robb, Theon, Ned, Jory, and Rodrick but if you look in the back appendix and truly care it will like tell you the jobs of the winterfell people.

And your fanart is hilarious!
