All That I Am
question
Have you read this book?
Yes, I finished it last week. Excellent, well researched, fact based story of German refugees in England carrying on with their anti Hitler activities. A novel of amazing courage and dreadful betrayal. Not an easy, quick read but recommended for anyone with an interest in recent history.
I recently finished it and I liked it. It was well-written and well-researched, the story "felt" true and based on my other readings it is quite believable. I thought it flowed well and didn't get too hung up in the history while still describing it well. It is amazing to think of the courage involved in those years--as well as the self-interest. Just how would we respond to similar circumstances?
Beautifully written. The language seems sparse and yet imagery is so vivid, the landscapes, the rooms, cafes, the cabaret... The research was painstaking, the story built on it brought these people to life. It is hard to take historical facts and reconstruct life. It is not an easy story, it's tragic and scary, we have advantage of seeing it in retrospect and know how the story ended, for them it was the future, still open to hope.
I read it a couple of months ago. I found the story compelling and was fascinated to read how the author based it upon first hand stories and documented facts. I agree with the comments about the amazing courage but found it thought-provoking the varying sources of that courage - some idealistic, others grounded in the most mundane of convictions.
