David Firmage Hello.
Joined goodreads a couple of weeks ago and joined here in the last couple of days. Getting back into reading slowly and starting my slow climb from depression, again.

Robert | 2 comments Greetings!
I am Robert from Lima Ohio. I pulled myself out of the dark ages and returned to reading like I did back when I was in high school. No more shall I read just two books a year. Groups like this one have helped me find many a great new book to explore. I am more of a lurker than a chatter, but happy to be here!

Maria Jose (mjcj) Hello everybody! I’m Maria Jose from Spain. It’s the first time I join a group in Goodreads. I loved to talk about books but I find myself with only a few people to talk to 😔.
Writing In English isn’t my strong point, apologies in advance 😀 any correction is welcome 😂.
I really look forward to read the next fantasy novel about Innsmouth.
See you around!

Robert Collins Hello!

My name is Robert. I write and I read science fiction and fantasy. I'll also read anything else that catches my eye. Right now I'm reading through the "Enchanted Forest Chronicles." I've got a few other genre books that I picked up over the holidays to read.

Happy to be here!

Jodie (anntsy) | 3 comments Hello Everyone! My name is Jodie and I joined this group because I decided to focus more on sci-fi and fantasy books this year and wanted to find some recommendations. I've been going through the list of past books read by the group to see what appeals to me. Looking forward to finding some good reads.

Hola Nick! I feel your pain. Here, have an internet full of book lovers :D Hope you get to have those conversations you've been missing.

Alison Thompson | 2 comments Hello, I’m Alison. I got into sci-fi when I read my sister’s school copy of Fahrenheit 451 in grade 5. I loved it, even though I didn’t understand a lot of what was going on, and proceeded to read everything I could by Bradbury. I then discovered Anne McCaffery and wanted to leave my dull life and move to Pern. Marion Zimmer Bradley, Andre Norton, Heinlein, Clarke, David Eddings, Orson Scott Card all helped me survive high school.

I found this group as the recent death of Ursula Le Guin made me realize I have few friends to discuss sci-fi and fantasy novels with. And I’m keen to find new authors. I look forward to discussions with you all!

Welcome Alison! I'm sorry a tragedy brought you to us, but strength in numbers! Glad to have you, hope to see you in discussion! We're voting on books for March now, so I hope you'll head to the polls :-D

message 6465: by Jarrod (new)

Jarrod | 2 comments Hey everyone my name is Jarrod I’m new to the group. I’m 41 years old and live in Idaho. As a kid I wasn’t much of a reader unfortunately, but now as an adult I am changing that and reading more. I like a variety of genres including Horror, Sci Fi, and Fantasy. Horror is my favorite, but I’m trying to read more Sci Fi and Fantasy (as I love some of the fantasy and sci-fi movies out there). Anyway glad to be here and nice to meet everyone I look forward to some good books and making new friends. Thanks!

message 6467: by J.J. (new)

J.J. Hello everyone, I'm an avid reader as much as the next person in here. Some more than others I'm sure lol. I'm from Texas and loving the weather. I'm also in other groups, Sci/Fi & Herioc Fantasy, and Fantasy Buddy Reads. So I'm here to see what's going on and possibly make new friends. I've just finished back to back reads or The First Law trilogy by Joe Ambercrombie, then LIes of Locke Lamora and Red Sea under Red Sky by Scott Lynch. Right now I'm reading Iron Gold by Pierce Brown the Red Rising series. I hope to get some recs of new books I have yet read and possibly join in some group discussions. And sometimes I'll joke around because I've notice in some group others are a bit tight wound and take things too seriously. Books should be fun

Tara | 2 comments Hi all, I'm Tara and I live in Nairobi, Kenya. I've always loved dystopia novels, and have recently enjoyed some other sci-fi reads (The Golem and the Jinni, the Red Rising series, The Martian, Station Eleven, Ready Player One, etc). I've decided I want to delve more into the genre, and I joined this group to get some great book recommendations. Looking forward to reading more from you all!

Welcome all!

Hey Michael! Your "intro book (AWIT)" is very in vogue right now, that must be fun! Are you excited about the movie or nervous?

Hiya JJ! No jokes here, very serious all the time always =P I am of course kidding, glad to have you, hope you find some good things to try!

Hello Tara! Man, you're hitting like a "best of" streak with those books :) hope you find some more great picks!

Y'all should consider voting in our March polls, and checking out our current reads (Tara, have you read Artemis yet? We're on that one!) Artemis and Winter Tide are the current books and we have 4 re-reads (changes on the 15th) as well as several buddy reads. Get lost (in a good way!), poke around, and I hope you all find something fun to read!

Sci-fi and Fantasy are what I was weaned on, so I'm really looking forward to seeing and hearing what you guys are all about. It'll probably take me a fair while to catch up/on as I may or may not be utilising this as a tool of procrastination... but I'm sure I'll get there :)

Happy reading folks!

Hola Benjamin and Winona!!

Winona, reading is the best kind of procrastination because you still get to feel accomplished having spent time investigating, discussing, or absorbing books! It's like when you're supposed to be doing homework, and instead clean the kitchen.

I hope you both finds lots of things to enjoy!

David Patneaude | 9 comments Hello, book people. I'm Dave (David on my book covers), and I've been reading for enjoyment for as long as I can remember (and that's a long time). I tend to read a wide range of genres--whatever sounds good, is pretty much my criterion, whatever gets strong reviews from reviewers I trust. If I had the time I'd be out there trying everything, but the too-many-books-too-little-time truism is even more valid today, so I let the reviewers (or friends) whittle it down a little for me. Although I've never gotten into what I've heard some people call "hard" science fiction, I've always had a love for otherworldly, ghostly, fantastic, chilling stories. I started with Grimms' and Andersen's creepily illustrated fairy tales and scary comic books (Tales of the Crypt, etc) at the corner store (my mom wouldn't have let them in the house) and moved on to Poe and Bradbury and Stephen King and many others. I've also read a lot of speculative YA stuff (John Bellairs, Nancy Farmer, MT Anderson, Suzanne Collins, David Almond, and Andrew Smith come to mind) and even written some. In this group I hope to find recommendations from readers who read in the same ballpark as I do, and others that will coax me to take a step outside.

message 6479: by Georgia (new)

Georgia Ball (askmaridee) | 8 comments Hi, I'm Georgia and I've written a bunch of comics. Fun facts about me include:
-I've read every issue of Starlog Magazine between 1974 and 1985
-I tried to join a LOTR MUDD in 1994 and later met one of the elves in real life
-I've read a lot of science fiction and have thoughts about it
-my father accurately predicted that Luke and Leia were twins while we were watching Empire in the theater

Today I went to the bookstore and picked up Jack McDevitt (again) and my first Ursula LeGuinn. I'm listening to Artemis and I joined this group because no one I know reads science fiction.

message 6481: by Paul (new)

Paul Arvidson (paularvidson) *cough, tap, tap* Hello! Is this thing on?

I'm Paul, but folks tend to call me Arvo. I've read and loved SF & F since forever. For long and complex reasons I became an SFF author recently.

But being a writer these days feels like being thrown out the airlock and hoping that The Heart of Gold is gonna pick you up. Y'know lonely and a bit scary. So, I thought I'd say "Hi" on here.

I am an author with books to plug, but y'know what? We hardly know each other, pull up a chair. The first one's on me.

M.J. Konkel | 1 comments Hi, I'm MJ. I'm an older man if measured by the salt in my hair, but still young if measured by the tempo of my heart. I read tons of books when I was younger. Then it was down to a handful a year through a couple decades. Now, I reading a lot again and even started writing. My favorite books that I've read over the last year include Casimir Bridge (Darren Beyer), The Solarian Wars (Felix Savage) and Leviathan Awakes (James Corey).

message 6488: by Jean (new)

Jean | 67 comments Hello my fellow dreamers-of-other-worlds-and-dimensions!

I'm Jeanne! I just joined today and this is my first group on Goodreads! I aim to read 180 books (and more) this year.

Fantasy, romance, and thriller are my 3 absolute favorite genres, so I'm always secretly on the lookout for an epic romance in an epic fantasy type of book -- like I don't know, Lord of the Rings meets Titanic? LOL. A Court of Thorns and Roses by Sarah J. Maas fits this category for me.

My favorite fantasy authors include Sarah J. Maas, Cassandra Clare (I read a lot of YA Fantasy I'm sorry!), and most recently, S.A. Chakraborty.

My latest great fantasy read is City of Brass by S.A. Chakraborty.

If anyone is interested in buddy reading some of the big titles in the epic fantasy universe (e.g. Game of Thrones, Malazan Book of the Fallen, Mistborn, etc. -- yes I know I'm late in entering the fray!), please let me know!

Looking forward to everything this group has to offer.

Ethel Stanley | 4 comments Hi, I'm Ethel. I'm a part time administrator. I'm from Ireland. Can't believe I haven't come across this group before.

So, I'm in my 50s and now I've got more time to read books (and review them). I read all kinds of fiction and science fiction and any book that takes me places.

Got no pets, but my wacky family substitute in that area.

That's pretty much it. i won't say too much as I'm sure you've got plenty of pages to read on your kindles and what not. Same here. But you'll see me around. This is a huge group so I'm sure we'll get to exchange plenty of thoughts and recommendations. There seem to be plenty of nominations as well so I'll see where I can fit in.

Ethel

Oh, feel free to add me as your friend.

Not sure how the nomination thing works, and I don't know (exactly) what Gen Ships/Colonization means, but I'm reading a book based on planetary (non-earth) colonization. Would that qualify?
