The Wordsmiths and the Warguild
was my first book by
Hugh Cook
. I was very pleasantly surprised.
This is grown up Fantasy, without the fluff of fairy tales.
The protagonist Tagura reminds me of the Discworld's Rincewind but more realistic and without The Luggage to bail him out.
He is an anti hero in an anti fantasy adventure.
This book is available as a free e-book on the author's website:

It's a crappy old early internet HTML site, but text is text and the book is really good.
There are two other free books on the site, but I haven't read them yet.
