"Another strong non-fiction entry in this compendium, "Rich Men's Skins: A Social History of Armour" is a concise but very content-rich exploration of the role of armor in history. Particularly social history. With plenty of citations and footnotes, Parker goes from the ancient world to the modern and highlights how armor functions in practice, and also interacts with the social status of those who wear it. Too short!" Nov 06, 2022 04:17PM

Mervyn Peake
“What is Time, O sister of similar features, that you speak of it so subserviently? Are we to be the slaves of the sun, that secondhand overrated knob of gilt, or of his sister, that fatuous circle of silver paper? A curse upon their ridiculous dictatorship!”
Mervyn Peake, Titus Groan

Alexander Theroux
“The best reason for disbelieving in God is that he never gave us enough time in life to pursue enough knowledge to find sufficient truth.”
Alexander Theroux, Darconville's Cat

Neil Gaiman
“Grown-ups don't look like grown-ups on the inside either. Outside, they're big and thoughtless and they always know what they're doing. Inside, they look just like they always have. Like they did when they were your age. Truth is, there aren't any grown-ups. Not one, in the whole wide world.”
Neil Gaiman, The Ocean at the End of the Lane

“Only a generation of readers will spawn a generation of writers.”
Steven Spielberg

Lord Dunsany
“So he sat and listened to pigeons talking, till it seemed to him they were trying to lull the restlessness of Earth, and thought that they might by drowsy incantation be putting some spell against time, through which it could not come to harm their nests; for the power of time was not made clear to him yet and he knew not yet that nothing in our fields has the strength to hold out against time.”
Lord Dunsany, The King of Elfland's Daughter
