First: HER SURNAME
America Singer (the mc) - guess what she is?! A SINGER. A FREAKING SINGER. I mean, that is sooo dumb! Was that supposed to be funny or smart or an inside joke? America Singer the singer - wow! I'm amazed! Urgh.

2. WHAT GENRE IS THIS?!
I wanted to read a dystopian, and all I've read about is romance! Like, I'm okay with romance, but where the heck is the dystopian part?! I would have liked it if it had more dystopian, like, for example, entering The Selection was mandatory instead of some competition you could enter if you wanted to.
So far, I've been treated to - 'ooooh, I loove Aspen, but - oh no, my name! I'm Selected, and I have to marry the prince - oh no, Aspen broke up with me, he said I was pretty and now i have to go marry this stupid prince *cry'. THIS IS SUPPOSED TO BE DYSTOPIAN!

3. THE 'I'M NOT LIKE OTHER GIRLS' TROPE
Well, I don't usually have a problem with this trope if it's used properly, for exmaple, in Hunger Games, Katniss is sort of a 'I'm not like other girls trope'. But she doesn't go showing it off! She's a reluctant hero!
This trope wasn't used properly for The Selection.

4. "DON'T CALL ME PRETTY, FIRST MOM, THEN MAY, NOW YOU."
I like strong, brave, kind protagonists - this girl? She's trying to deny that she's pretty when everyone says she is. Like is that the author trying to act like America's modest or something, because it's not working.

5. I. HATE. ASPEN.
Like, what's his deal? He brings in too much romance, like wayyy too irrelevant. And I'm not a feminist, but I'm just saying - why does he say 'The man is supposed to provide' and stuff? Like - what? It's annoying! I mean, I know the man is supposed to provide, and stuff, but that's an odd thing to say in a book.
I'll write my thoughts again once I've finished the book. I know some people might say I haven't read the whole book so why should I hate it already, but I just think this book is too overrated. I only read it because it said it had dystopian and it was hyped. Thumbs up if you agree this book is bad. ...more "
