The book is so unique; the world different from any other, the powers unbelievable and imaginative (they get their power from consuming metals!), the three-dimensional characters quite lovable and the writing, while not my preferred lyrical prose for Fantasy, still suits the novel well. After reading as much as Fantasy as I do, things can become a bit repetitive and this was a welcome change.

The characters are something else. I’m still waiting to truly make up my mind about them but they’re all developed really well and you come to understand their motives and desires. Everyone is just so badass and distinct from others. My favourite characters are probably Vin, Elend, Kelsier, Sazed and Breeze; which is like half the characters. I am quite fond of all of them and can’t wait to spend more time with them in the next books.

Something devastating happened during a really intense scene and SO MANY THINGS were occurring that I kind of chose to ignore it until I finished the chapter. Then I may have shed a tear or two. One of the first books of the year that made me cry, even a little bit.

So, the romance felt a little bit unnecessary to me toward the beginning. I thought this was gonna be ONE Fantasy novel where I can worry about saving the world in peace without some boy intruding but, somehow, 200 pages after the book starts, this dude waltz in with a book and steals Vin’s heart. I warmed up to Elend pretty quickly (I mean, the boy has a favourite reading spot. I don’t know what more I could want) and I realized that the romance is necessary because it causes certain important events to occur, character development and such. However, I still think the romance was kinda instalove-y.

I love that it is so easy to get lost in this book and delve into the pages and lives of these characters.

July 6, 2024: Still soooo good on a reread 8 years later. Can't wait to reread the rest of the trilogy and hopefully this time I'll actually get to the other Cosmere books. ...more "
