Dan Koboldt Peter, thanks for your question. The first book, The Rogue Retrieval, is your starting point. If you prefer sci-fi, I'd point you to The Triangle, which is published through the Serial Box app.
Dan Koboldt Thank you for the question. It's wonderful that you're encouraging students to write book reviews. We can always use more great book reviewers.

Yes, my books are essentially PG-13 and certainly appropriate for high school students. I'm glad you found my site useful. Please let me know if I can help you in any way!
Dan Koboldt Believe it or not, I'm working on a book along those lines. It's about a genetic engineer who goes to work for a company that produces customized dragons for home use. I'm pitching it as "Build-A-Bear workshop meets Jurassic Park."

Will keep you posted!
Dan Koboldt Dan, great question. It took me about a year to complete the first draft, then 4 months to land a literary agent. Then 6 months of revisions/waiting before it went out. Then 9 months to get the offer, and 7 months to publication. So the complete timeline from first NaNo to published book was about 3 years.
Dan Koboldt Thank you for asking! Yes, I've written the sequel, tentatively entitled The Island Deception. Edit: In May 2016, I announced that Harper Voyager made an offer for that book and an as-yet-unwritten third volume, tentatively entitled The World Awakening. Look for them in February 2017 and February 2018.
Dan Koboldt In terms of writing strengths, I know I'm stronger at exposition than dialogue. This isn't terribly surprising, since I've done a lot of blogging and scientific writing (both of which have a narrative). However, I think the most challenging aspect is simply getting words on the page every day.
Dan Koboldt That's easy: it's the writing community. Both aspiring and established authors are incredibly supportive of one another, which is so valuable because this is a tough business. There's so much rejection and disappointment and waiting; it's hard to stay sane if you don't have like-minded people who will listen to your griping and continually build you up.

I'm proud to be part of communities like Codex writers where everyone does just that.
Dan Koboldt I'm currently writing the sequel to The Rogue Retrieval, which is tentatively entitled The Island Deception.
Dan Koboldt I've always been a fan of stage magic. I got the idea for The Rogue Retrieval a few years ago when I read a news article about Teller (the quiet half of Penn & Teller) and his efforts to obtain patent/copyright protection for his illusions. I started thinking about how technology has really changed performance magic, and I wondered what it would be like if a modern illusionist somehow got back to medieval Europe.
