David Moody first released Hater in 2006, and without an agent, succeeded in selling the film rights for the novel to Mark Johnson (producer, Breaking Bad) and Guillermo Del Toro (director, The Shape of Water, Pan's Labyrinth). Moody's seminal zombie novel Autumn was made into a movie starring Dexter Fletcher and David Carradine. He has an unhealthy fascination with the end of the world and likes to write books about ordinary folks going through absolute hell. With the publication of continuing Hater and Autumn stories, Moody has cemented his reputation as a writer of suspense-laced SF/horror, and "farther out" genre books of all description.

The movie almost entered production back in 2009 but stalled at the last moment (JA Bayona was signed on to direct, from a script by Glen Mazarra of Walking Dead TV fame). Since then it's slipped into development hell. And that's about all I can tell you... for now. The option on the film rights is due to expire in the next few months, and I've had some very interesting conversations recently. Watch this space!

I try to keep up with recent genre entries, and also maintain a steady diet of classics. The longer I've been writing, the more important reading has become. It keeps me fresh and keeps me learning.

---

I don't read as much as I like, but when I do, it's usually within the genres I prefer to write. That said, I think it's misleading to describe horror as a genre in its own right. It's more a feeling, I think, an emotion. Two of the most horrific books I've read are The Road and We Need to Talk About Kevin, and neither are described as horror!

I can't remember when I posted this answer... has to be at least 5 years ago. I saw it and wanted to update, because I read voraciously now. Interestingly, the balance has shifted and I now read more out of genre than in. Not sure what that says, exactly, but I thought it was worth noting!(less)

Sorry - I didn't spot your question.

Yes, it's the same overall universe as the original series, but as I wrote it post-Covid, it felt natural to mention the pandemic. Regardless of when the original books were written (2000-2013), anyone who reads th See Full Answer

“Surviving is one thing," he said quietly, his voice suddenly calmer, "but you've got to have a reason to do it. There's no point in living if you don't have anything worth living for.”
David Moody, Autumn

“I never get enough of the adrenaline rush of hearing good music played live and played loud like this. Hearing these songs again snatches me out of the day-to-day and helps me forget all the things I usually waste my time worrying about. As long as the music's playing I don't have to do anything except listen, relax, and enjoy myself.”

Mkittysamom I am so so so excited to read “One of Us Will Be Dead by Morning”! I love the Hater series because it’s so different, in that people get weirdly aggressive and are a new breed of..monster? I enjoyed this series much more than the last couple books of Autumn series! I think your writing is getting better and hooking me in!! Just wanted to say Thanks!

Thanks Cedric. Really pleased to hear how much you enjoyed Hater. Thanks for picking it up. Hope you enjoy the rest of the series too!

Cedric Nye Thank you very much for accepting my Friend request. I've only read "Hater" so far, but man, WOW! I sometimes feel like that split is actually happening around me. It is, I guess, to differing degrees. Everybody figuring out how the person next to them is different than they, and then fighting about it! Awesome book, and I look forward to all of your other books.
All my best,
Cedric

Christine Hatfield Thanks for being my friend

David Thanks Veronica. Hope you enjoy Aftermath.

I've got a few things planned now that the Autumn and Hater series are both done. Can't say much right now, but I hope to make some announcements very soon!

Veronica Hi David! Just got my copy of Aftermath in the mail and I can't wait to start it. I wish it wasn't the last one :( What do you plan on writing about now that the series is over? Well whatever it is, I can't wait to read!

message 10: by Angela (last edited Feb 09, 2012 07:42AM)

Angela Wow, I never got a notification that you had replied David so sorry for the late response.
I enjoyed the film as it was very atmospheric and the build up of tension was portrayed well. I find that's quite rare in British film, especially within the horror genre. Of course, I'm a complete sucker for anything zombie related and the horror channel is a firm favourite of mine. I'm sure the book will better though :-)

I'm trying to avoid the library as have a few things to read first and everytime I go to the library I always end up leaving with an armful of books, but I know your books are there on the shelf so can easily grab them.

message 9: by David

David Thanks Angela, it's great to hear you're giving the books a go!

Lots of people didn't enjoy the Autumn movie (I have mixed feelings about it...) so I really appreciate the positive words.

Thanks again!

Dave

Angela Hi David, I watched the film version of 'Autumn' yesterday from when I'd recorded it from the Horror Channel and really enjoyed it, so much so that I plan on securing a copy of the book in the library along with 'Hater'. I know generally that the books are better than the films so I'm looking forward to reading it. Angela.

Sharon Great, look forward to the website and the release in April. Thanks for speedy response, Sharon

Hello Sharon!

Purification is out in April in the UK, and August in the US. There's a new Autumn website launching in the next couple of weeks with more information and loads of free Autumn stories. I'll update Goodreads when it goes live.

Sharon Hi ya, when is the Autumn: Purification re-release due and is it going to be available on Kindle?

That's very cool! Thank you. Glad you enjoyed the books.

I think I need to STOP thinking about the end of the world now. I think I'm addicted (and I don't have the excuse of having a philosophy degree to fall back on!)

Thanks again, Brandon.

Brandon I love the Autumn series. The first book actually inspired me to explore what would drive a person to want to survive a zombie apocalypse. I figured I should use my degree in philosophy for something. Thanks for the inspiration!
