Papaphilly asked David Moody:

Do you read within genre very much, mostly out of genre, or is it about even?

David Moody I'm answering this again (at least another 5 years since I last did!). Now I'd say I read half and half. I try to keep up with recent genre entries, and also maintain a steady diet of classics. The longer I've been writing, the more important reading has become. It keeps me fresh and keeps me learning.

I don't read as much as I like, but when I do, it's usually within the genres I prefer to write. That said, I think it's misleading to describe horror as a genre in its own right. It's more a feeling, I think, an emotion. Two of the most horrific books I've read are The Road and We Need to Talk About Kevin, and neither are described as horror!

I can't remember when I posted this answer... has to be at least 5 years ago. I saw it and wanted to update, because I read voraciously now. Interestingly, the balance has shifted and I now read more out of genre than in. Not sure what that says, exactly, but I thought it was worth noting!
