News on my latest release!

I am excited to share the news that I have a new book coming out on 31st January, 2023 (available to pre-order today!)

Waiting For Our Rainbow is a WW2 romance set in Cornwall and tells the story of Anne, a young Cornish woman, and Joe, an American soldier who has been sent to England to train for the largest amphibious military assault in history, more commonly known as D Day.

Would you give your heart away if you knew it could only end in goodbye?

It should have been a time of romance and excitement for Anne – but it’s 1941 and the war is raging. So instead, she spends her days repairing spitfire wings and reminding herself that the real sacrifice is going on far away from her Cornish village.

When the news breaks that America has entered the war, it brings cautious hope to Anne and her family. And eventually, as the Jeeps filled with GIs roll in, it seems their little community is to play a pivotal role in the next stage of the fight.

But the Americans don’t just bring Hollywood glamour and optimism, they also bring something more tantalising – so when Anne meets handsome Joe Mallory, she has to remind herself of exactly why he’s there; that any relationship between them could only end in goodbye.

But is the inevitability of ‘goodbye’ powerful enough to stop what has already begun to blossom?

The story was inspired by a childhood memory of an elderly gentleman. He recalled seeing American soldiers for the first time in Cornwall and it left him with a fond impression which lasted for the remainder of his life.

Between 1942 and 1944, many American soldiers arrived in Britain to prepare for D Day. The southcoast, including Cornwall with its many natural harbours and inlets, provided perfect embarkation points and training areas. Cornwall became the temporary home for thousands of American G.I.s. It was the perfect setting for romance to blossom between the young men and the daughters of their hosts. Yet, cultural differences would rear their heads, and the constant training and fear of the looming battle was ever-present. It was a time in our history when everyone had to learn they were stronger working together than holding on to what drove them apart.

Follow Joe and Anne's love story in Waiting For Our Rainbow which will be released as an ebook on 31st January, followed by print and audio releases shortly afterwards.

Lock down: At home with Victoria Cornwall

As a writer of historical fiction, I never imagined I would be part of an epic, historical (and devastating) event that would change the lives of nearly everyone on the planet. The Corona virus global pandemic has taken us all by surprise. There are many who will say that we should have saw it coming, however I never envisaged everyone in the UK would be distancing ourselves from their friends, families and work colleagues, as I served our family’s Christmas dinner at the end of 2019.

Never before have we valued the key workers of our society to the extent as we are now, or miss the face to face contact with the people we care about. Hopefully something good will come out of this tragic unfolding event and that we will become a better society for experiencing it.

And I, like many others I suspect, feel a little guilty that my contribution to this pandemic is not as heroic as many who are confronting this virus head-on and trying to keep life bearable for the rest of us. I am simply doing what I have been told to do, staying at home in the comfort of my own home, my only excursions to the outside world is for a daily walk, food and delivering essentials to my parents… all at a safe distance.

Perhaps the hardest thing for me is missing out on seeing friends and relatives who are expecting their first child. At least I can see their children growing via videos and photos and I can only hope that by the time they make their arrival into the world, I am able to hold them.

Old skills have been indulged…

I’ve been reading much more, even revisiting my own books as at one point as I had run out of paperbacks!

I’ve rediscovered my love for baking and probably contributed to the shortage of flour and eggs.

I have learnt new skills…

For the first time in my life I’ve had the time to improve my gardening skills. I have a new garden so it has been quite exciting to watch the plants in my garden emerge this spring. I’ve learnt their names and how to care for them as they make their appearance and I am extremely grateful that, unlike many, I have this safe space to enjoy.

I’ve learnt how to video with multiple people. Many have had to adapt their working lives and Choc Lit authors are no exception.

Even my local choir leader has adapted and provided online singing lessons! I certainly need them!

However, as the lock down dragged on, I wanted to be of more help. I had retired from nursing too long ago to be recalled, but I still wanted to do something for the carers and medical staff who work today. Due to the global demand for PPE, the UK supply chain was surely tested. Scrubs and masks ‘hubs’ began to spring up all over the UK, where amateur and professional dressmakers offered their services to make scrubs and face masks for free. I became a member to a Cornish Scrubs and Face-masks hub and offered my amateur skills. Within a week the material (bought from donations) arrived and I began sewing! NHS workers, GP surgeries, care homes and community workers have all benefited from these free scrubs which allow workers to go home to their families, safe in the knowledge that they are not carrying the virus on their clothing. At a time of crisis, we should all do our bit, whether that is staying home or doing a bit more. All is valued.

So life has changed for us all and it will be a long time before it returns to ‘normal’ again, but we will get there. I know this because the human race is extraordinary in its ability to adapt and solve the problems in this world… it is only the lack of will to solve them which has prevented so many problems being solved. Thankfully, the world agrees that the Covid 19  has to be controlled, with the goal of eradicating it one day, so I am confident that ‘normal’ will return to us again as the will is in the global community to beat it.

Stay safe. Stay well.

It’s Publication Day for Daniel’s Daughter!

Today is the Publication Day for Daniel’s Daughter! Inspired by a plot in one of my previous novels, I began to wonder about closely guarded family secrets which are just waiting to be exposed.

Have you ever been in a dilemma of whether to tell the truth or keep what you know a secret? It is easy to jump to the conclusion that telling the truth is the best thing to do, but what if the truth will cause great heartache? What if keeping a secret will protect someone you love? What if you don’t know what the truth is anymore? That is just the situation that my latest lead character finds herself in.

Meet Grace Kellow, my red haired Cornish heroine who is…

DANIEL’S DAUGHTER

Daniel’s Daughter

Set in 1895, Grace Kellow’s story will take you from the rugged tors of Bodmin Moor to the white, industrial, lunar peaks of mid-south Cornwall. Join Daniel’s Daughter, as she meets the handsome, but surly, Talek Danning and discovers…

Paperback Release of The Daughter of River Valley

I am delighted to share the news that The Daughter of River Valley is now available in paperback!

In 2014, prior to publication, The Daughter of River Valley was short-listed for the New Talent Award at the Festival of Romantic Fiction and nominated by InD’Tale magazine for the RONE “Indie and Small Published Book Award”.

The Cornish tale was inspired by a beautiful valley in Cornwall, a head injury I sustained as a child and Cornwall’s strong community spirit and heritage. I was delighted when award winning publisher, Choc Lit, asked to see it and subsequently published it as an ebook. The audio publisher, Soundings, later published it as an audio-book. Today I am thrilled that it has now been released as a paperback so a wider audience can enjoy it.

Join Beth Jago, the heroine, as she finds herself in a very difficult situation with a man she is unsure she can trust …

The Daughter of River Valley

Can you trust a man with no name?

Cornwall, 1861 Beth Jago appears to have the idyllic life, she has a trade to earn a living and a cottage of her own in Cornwall’s beautiful River Valley. Yet appearances can be deceptive …

Beth has a secret. Since inheriting her isolated cottage she’s been receiving threats, so when she finds a man in her home she acts on her instincts. One frying pan to the head and she has robbed the handsome stranger of his memory and almost killed him.

Fearful he may die, she reluctantly nurses the intruder back to health. Yet can she trust the man with no name who has entered her life, or is he as dangerous as his nightmares suggest? As they learn to trust one another, the outside threats worsen. Are they linked to the man with no past? Or is the real danger still outside waiting … and watching them both?

It’s Publication Day for Daughter of the House!

I am delighted to share the news that Daughter of the House, the fifth novel in the Cornish Tales series, is now available as an ebook and audiobook! A stand-alone tale set in Cornwall, it tells the story of Evelyn Pendragon, a young aristocratic woman, who’s role in life is moulded by the high expectations placed on her by Victorian society and the Pendragon name. And that was the role she was willing to fulfil, until she met Drake Vennor, an apprentice gardener on her father’s estate …

Inspired by Victorian beliefs and discrimination across areas of law, life at home and in medicine, this novel tells the story of Evelyn as she fights to be with the man she loves. Will Drake be there for her when she needs him most, and is he worth fighting for just one more time?

Daughter of the House is published by Choc Lit and can be downloaded from all eBook platforms. To learn more, just click on the appropriate link below:-
