Cyan Night is a self-professed “martial arts junkie”. Having dabbled in a wide range of martial arts, from Tai Chi and Wushu to Judo, Boxing and Muay Thai since the age of 5, Cyan has been profoundly inspired by the bravery and hardship endured by fighters encountered in the process of training.

Girl Fighter is Cyan Night’s debut novel, drawn largely from the experience of a colourful martial arts career. In addition to being an amateur fighter, Cyan has lead an adventurous life that spans across 7 continents and a travel log that included close to 100 nations. Notable escapades include Antarctica, Central Asia and Trans-Siberian (where Cyan was moved by the lives of nomads), Everest Base Camp, Angel’s Fall and 2 unsuccessful attempts to sum

First of all, the book does not wish to inspire anyone of any gender to beat someone else up, except maybe in a combat sport tournament if that is your hobby/profession. Keep in mind, the term 'sport' means that the conditions of the combat is highly regulated and monitored for safety.

The book does not explicitly advocate the rights of any gender, however, it does bring to light how disadvantaged a woman (of a minority race) can be in work and professional sports, and how one individual fights against these circumstances. In my opinion, feminism is sometimes over simplified by society as merely equal rights in law. In reality, there are many subtle ways in which a person can be marginalised without breaking the law. The book wishes to inspire anyone, regardless of race or gender to fight against the covert discrimination.

It is also my opinion that with equal rights comes equal responsibility. Aliyah, in 'Girl Fighter' is someone who takes complete accountability of her life in facing all her troubles.(less)

Book Review: In the Mind Fields

In the Mind Fields: Exploring the New Science of Neuropsychoanalysis by Casey Schwartz

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

I love the concept, or what the book set out to achieve. Schwartz admits right from the beginning that she has never been a ‘science person’, yet she bravely tackles a very difficult subject of bridging neuroscience and psychology, in other words, the hard and software of our brains. It is

“Traumatic events of the earliest years of infancy and childhood are not lost but, like a child’s footprints in west cement, are often preserved lifelong. Time does not heal the wounds that occur in those earliest years; time conceals them. They are not lost; they are embodied.”—”
