One Year Later
Boy, I should really update this thing more often. It's been almost a year since I last made an entry.
Well, lately I've been hella busy both with the day job and with FurPlanet's heavy catalog of new releases for Anthrocon. We're up to 24 new releases so far, including 5 prose works. Some of the layouts were a bit complicated this time, but I'm happy with how much I'm improving in my efficiency with In Design.
Heading to bed now. If you want to keep in touch with me, I'm pretty active on Twitter @FuzzWolf

Central Plains FurCon 2014 con report
I haven't written a con report in a while, but I wanted to do one for Central Plains FurCon cuz more people need to know about this con.
CPFC is in Wichita, KS so it's only a 5.5 hour drive from Dallas. Nice thing about that is I only need to take one day off work.
The GOH this year was Laura Garabedian. She's a friend and an artist we've worked with so it was nice to see her being honoured.
Thursday:
I got to work early then hit the road. We'd packed the car the night before so I left direct from the train station. The drive was good. Uneventful and with no major slowdowns. I started the audiobook of John Scalzi's new book, Lock In, on the way. It's a 10 hour audio so I finished it on the way back, good book btw.
I arrived around 10:30pm and pretty much got myself settled in and went right to bed.
Friday:
Got up and met Rahata for breakfast. We enjoyed the free breakfast buffet. This is part of how amazing this hotel is. A full hot breakfast buffet is completely free. They also do free dinner from 5:30 to 7pm along with three free drinks.
After breakfast Rahata helped me out big time since my back wasn't doing so well. We got my stock from the car and got all set up in the dealers room.
I had two tables and the were stuffed with different titles. It's a small con, but we do alright there for it being about 90 people each year. It means we have to pack a small quantity of a large range of titles though, so displaying them all on two tables is a challenge.
The highlight of Friday was when the charity showed up. They had an area of their own in the dealers room and they brought various animals.
OMG they brought a honey badger!
There's an animal I never thought I'd see in person. I even got to pet her! Their fur is really rough, even the underbelly, but the pads of their feet are super soft. Apparently they sense a lot with their feet.
They're not native to this continent, but the charity has a family of them including a breeding pair. This is for conservation as they are very endangered.
This one's name was Bonnie. Her brother wasn't there, but his name is Clyde. :-P Perfect for honey badgers.
I thought it was pretty cool that Laura and Vantid said down with their sketchbooks to do some live animal sketching. I think Laura took a few hundred reference pictures.
Rest of the day I worked my table. I closed about an hour early because it was pretty quiet and then I took a nap which turned out a lot longer than I expected. I got up around 9 and went to have a late dinner with Rahata at Avi, the hotel restaurant.
I had the pork chops. Definitely recommended. Just amazing. Avi is one of the big reasons I love this hotel.
I'd put my Kindle in my pocket so after dinner I relaxed in the hotel lobby for a couple of hours to read.
The lobby is huge and would be well suited for lobbycon. This con really needs to grow to take advantage of the space they're in. The lobby is big and sprawling, full of little clusters of chairs and ottomans. Perfect for a relaxing read or to chat with friends.
Saturday:
Typical for most cons I go to, I ate breakfast and worked the table.
Highlights of Saturday include the charity bringing back their adorale armadillo and hedgehog who were there last year and also another newcomer, a binturang. Which is smething I hadn't seen before, but they're super fluffy and have long, floof tails.
I also did a publisher Q&A on Saturday. It was sparsely attended, but given the size of the con I expected that. Much thanks to those who did show up and help keep the conversation going. Warrndog in particular was a good discussion started. He's the writing track lead at Oklacon and someone I'd like to chat to more about writing.
Dinner on Saturday was lamb if I recall correctly.
Sunday:
This was a short day. The charity auction started at 2pm and closing ceremonies was around 4pm. Since it was slow and with those two events I didn't expect it to get busier, I closed up shop at 2. The official close time of the den was 5pm, but I wanted to be on the road so I wouldn't be home too late. I had to work on Monday.
Kyo was my roommate for the weekend and he helped me out immensely with packing up the table and getting all the stock back into the car.
I fueled up, hit the road and finished my book.
Summary:
As with last year, CPFC was a very relaxed weekend in an awesome hotel.
My main criticism of CPFC is the same as last year: marketing!
CPFC is basically in the middle of the country. It's 5 to 10 hours from a wide range of possible attendees by car, not to mention all the Kansas locals. It has the potential to grow a lot, but the problem is very few people know about it.
I wrote this so I could talk about my weekend and hopefully let some folks know about this great little con who didn't know before.
They also need a lot of help. They have a very small staff who are all doing multiple jobs. So if you're looking to staff or volunteer at a con, consider helping out this one. It's a young, small con with great potential.

Married!
Figured I'd post a personal life update here.
Last Sunday (8/31/2014), Teiran and I got married!
We had proposed to each other last June after the Supreme Court struck down the Defense of Marriage Act. Then early last month we flew out to California to have the legal ceremony done and to get our marriage license. This weekend was the big wedding with family and friends here in Texas.
Texas doesn't recognize same-sex marriage yet, but since there's no state income tax and our marriage is recognized on the Federal level then it is legal for income tax purposes. I'm confident that within five years, if not two or three, this state will be forced to recognize our marriage too.
Anyway, after being a couple for 13 years we're finally married. It doesn't change much in our daily lives since we've been living together for nearly a decade already, but it still meant a lot to have the ceremony, to officially proclaim our love with all the people close to us celebrating with us.
The weekend was a mad whirlwind due to bachelor parties, out of town guests, the ceremony and the after party. It was fun and overwhelming in a good way, but also pretty exhausting.
I'm really happy and I feel so incredibly fortunate to have Teiran and so many awesome people in my life.
In other news, the cons I'm going to the rest of the year are Rainfurrest and Central Plains FurCon.
Now back to publishing and shipping books!

Credit Reports: this is how rigged the game is.
I subscribe to a service which monitors my credit score and emails me when it changes.
For those who don't know, I own a small publishing company. Our biggest event of the year is a convention in July where we release a lot of new titles. In preparation for this convention we have to spend a lot of money with our printer to stock up on products to sell.
Like most small businesses, we utilize our available credit for large expenses. In this case I used a card which had a zero balance and put the majority of our expenses on it, bringing it close to limit.
One of the factors which determines credit score is percentage of balance used to credit line available. You score higher if this percentage is lower.
As I expected when I used near 90% of the available credit on this card, this caused my credit score to drop.
The balance stayed on the card for two or three weeks and then I paid it off completely after the convention. The balance wasn't even on the card long enough to charge me interest.
After this I received another email saying that my credit score had gone up. Makes sense right?
Here's the twist.
My score decreased by 23 points (6/25/2014)
And increased by 13 points (7/12/2014)
A total loss of 10 points due to using one card for a couple of weeks.
Don't worry about me though. My credit is still healthy and it always stayed in the same range, which is the important part.
I'm lucky to be at a point in my life where a 10 point drop in my credit score doesn't really affect me. That wasn't always true though. Like most people I've worked for minimum wage, been a starving student and a retail wage slave. At times like that my credit score being off could have made a difference between getting a student loan or not, being able to replace a dying car, etc.
This is the kind of BS game the credit system plays and it always affects the young and lower wage workers more. Our purchasing power, even our abilities to get jobs and apply for rental housing can be affected by a score calculated by three reporting companies we have little control over.
Doesn't seem right to me. Just putting that out there.

Time of the Doctor review - Spoilers
I generally enjoy Moffat's writing, but I likened his quick explanation of various plot questions to receiving the Wiki answer rather than seing it played out. Who blew up the TARDIS, what are the Silence creatures, what is the order trying to achieve, what was in room 11, etc. The answers are all checked off one by one.
I also thought the whole "naked" gag at the begining was silly and unnecesssary.
Amy's appearance effectively minimized Clara's role in the regeneration scene, but I'm kinda okay with her showing up as it upholds the tradition going back to the Classic series of having bygone companions making an appearance for a regeneration scene. She still felt too much like a bystander though.
I was a little disappointed by the "suddenly Capaldi" jump-cut rather than seeing his face changing more gradually.
Overall too much packed in with not enough room for the various important plot points to breathe and the town of Christmas is underutilized.
Also, I didn't like the aging the Doctor to death thing. It's really out of character for him, especially as 11, to stay in one town for hundreds of years rather than working out a solution ages ago.
The end though, was good. 11 went out with dignity and grace rather than the godawful whining 10 did. 11's parting scene was truly in the spirit of the Doctor and Matt Smith was amazing as always.
3 of 5 stars, the final scene bumps it up from 2.

Radio Comix needs your help!
http://www.indiegogo.com/projects/help-save-radio-comix
Back in 1997/98 I was first discovering furry comics. Some of the first ones I read were published by Radio: Furrlough, Havoc Inc, Tales of the Fehnnik, etc. Back then, before Diamond further smothered the indy comics industry, you could find furry comics by Radio in your local comic store. Radio probably did more to spread furry comics in those days than any other publisher. They practically created the market for printed furry comics and paved the way for furs like me who would follow in their footsteps a decade later.
Now they could really use some help. As noted on the link above, their former accountant screwed them over and they owe a lot of money to the IRS. The actual total owed, as documented in the update, is $40,000! They have already met the modest goal of $4,000 they set, but I figure the fandom can dig a little deeper and maybe help them out a bit more. The campaign runs for another 29 days so there's plenty of time to contribute and earn one of the perks they have listed.
So if you can spare a few bucks to help out one of the early pioneers of furry publishing please go to http://www.indiegogo.com/projects/help-save-radio-comix and help Radio Comix out.
Thanks for listening!
