Blog Hop Stop #4! The Message In A Bottle Romance Collection
Flames lapped at the monk’s robes. He raced down the corridors that crackled with the collision of dampness and heat, dodging fire-lit debris. So this was to be the end, then. The night the stones of Ballyfir Monastery would tell their last tale…
So begins the tale of a humble monk, his unwavering courage, and the bronze bottle he sends into the night with a prayer that its contents might bring hope—the very word etched into the bottle—to someone, somewhere.
The Message in a Bottle Romance Collection follows the journey of that same bottle throughout the centuries in five novellas. It travels the world and touches hearts… and today, we’d like to invite you along for that journey.
Would you care to come along with us for a look behind the scenes in this short five-stop blog tour?
At each stop, one of the five co-authors will interview another, to take you chronologically through the novella collection and unwrap some fun bonus material.
Oh! And don’t miss the chance to enter the giveaway (more information at the bottom of this post). Thank you for joining us, friends!
Go Behind the Scenes with Jocelyn Green:
I’m so happy to be hosting Jocelyn here on my blog! If you don’t already know Jocelyn, I’m thrilled to have the opportunity to introduce you. It’s been such a pleasure getting to know her while working together on this collection, and I’m sure you’ll be blessed by her and her story.
Who is Jocelyn Green?
Jocelyn Green inspires faith and courage as the award-winning and bestselling author of numerous fiction and nonfiction books, including The Mark of the King, Wedded to War, a Christy Award finalist in 2013, and The 5 Love Languages Military Edition, which she coauthored with bestselling author Dr. Gary Chapman. She graduated from Taylor University in Upland, Indiana, with a B.A. in English, concentration in writing. She loves Mexican food, Broadway musicals, Toblerone chocolate bars, the color red, and reading on her patio. Jocelyn lives with her husband Rob and two small children in Cedar Falls, Iowa. Visit her at www.jocelyngreen.com.
And now for a few questions about Jocelyn and her story:
Where did you get your inspiration for this story?
In 2014, I visited the Marietta Museum of History, in Marietta, Georgia, to do a speaking and book signing event for what was then my latest release: Yankee in Atlanta (Book 3 of 4 in the Heroines Behind the Lines Civil War series). Before the event, the curator gave me a personal tour of the museum. Because of the research I did on Civil War Georgia, I was aware that Union General Sherman had hundreds of women and children millworkers from Roswell and Sweetwater Creek arrested and sent north from Marietta, Georgia. But the curator told me something I didn’t know: her colleague found a letter which told of a Union soldier proposing to a Southern millhand right there at the train station. That was the seed that blossomed into my novella, A River Between Us.
That museum also appears in my story—it was originally the Kennesaw House Hotel, Sherman’s headquarters while his army was encamped in Marietta.
What river does your title, A River Between Us, refer to?
When the millhands were sent north from Georgia, they were dumped on the north side of the Ohio River, while Sherman’s army fought the Battle of Atlanta and went on the March to the Sea. So the river came between my Southern heroine, Cora Mae, and the Union hero, Ethan Howard.
But the river also is metaphorical, representing a daunting challenge, a divide that isn’t easily crossed. The hope, however, is that even rivers like this can be bridged.
This is your first novella. How was this writing experience for you?
I really enjoyed working with co-authors on this collection! Writing can be such an isolating venture, it was a real treat to be able to work on a project together. I did find it challenging to tell a story in a third the length of a normal novel, but I’m happy with the finished product!
Where did your research take you this time?
As I mentioned earlier, I had already visited Marietta, Georgia, before I started writing this novella, so that was a help. My research also took me to books and the Internet, as usual. My go-to research assistant was the man who’d found the letter about the trainside proposal: Civil War historian and tour guide Brad Quinlin, an expert on Marietta history in particular. (In an episode of the NBC series, Who Do You Think You Are?, Quinlin researched the Civil War roots of Matthew Broderick.) He answered all my nitpicky questions!
My husband and I were also able to visit Ireland while all of us authors were waiting to hear whether we had a book contract for this collection. Amanda Dykes did an amazing job drafting the prologue, which takes place at a monastery in Ireland, and we all had a hand in the edits. While in Ireland, I fact checked a few things, and picked up a couple of items to add to our grand prize give-away: the earrings and the blank journal from the Book of Kells exhibit at Trinity College in Dublin.
What are you currently reading?
Right now, I’m enjoying The Messenger by Siri Mitchell, The Novelist by Angela Hunt, and an advanced copy of The Return by J.M. Hochstetler (Book 2 in her amazing Northkill Amish series co-authored with Bob Hochstetler).
Thank you, Jocelyn, for a lovely chat! I always enjoy peeking into other author’s lives. If it’s any comfort, I’ve written five novellas and I’m still challenged by the shorter length—but they’re so fun, as you found out. I love your pictures, too—imagining the Georgian mill running on the waterpower of Vickery Creek (pictured above) and the dramatic Cliffs of Moher in Ireland—so like the spot where our bottle began its journey. And I’m thrilled you’re reading Siri’s book. For those who follow my blog, they know Siri is my critique partner and The Messenger is one I especially loved!
As you’ll see from the details of our giveaway, we’re offering a unique combination of special gifts. One I’m connected to is called a “tear bottle” — something I’ve been known to give away whenever an occasion like this comes along. Do you recall from the book of Psalms that God collects our tears in a bottle? (Psalm 56:8) It’s a poignant reminder of God’s love and that He counts our tears as precious.

I’m so excited to introduce to you Ruth Logan Herne!
If you don’t already know Ruthy, I’m sure you’ll enjoy getting to know her.
There’s something perfect about books, cooler weather and fall in upstate New York! Especially with salesgirls like this one, right?

With changing leaves comes cozy fires, slipper socks and early sunsets.
Summer is crazy busy here on the farm. We grow vegetables and have a lovely flock of chickens and two dogs and three cats for mousing and 14 grandchildren who pop in on a regular basis. Not much reading gets done in the summer, so when autumn comes calling with her pretty paintbrush of color… I get more reading, writing and baking time: Perfect!
I love making food. I love eating, too, but I really love cooking and baking. I don’t know why this is, but my family is grateful and the genetic thread for cooking and baking didn’t get passed down to all my children, and that’s a curious thing in itself. Now that I’m writing all the time, though… well, let’s just say there are more sandwiches on the menu!

Pumpkin muffins!!! So good!
My characters either cook or don’t cook. Some are crafty, some are klutzy. Some carry guns… most don’t. Some love the crazy of kids and animals, and others shy away. It’s so much fun to create these fictional worlds, to see the characters come alive and then to guide them along their way. I love happy endings. Life is chock full of the other kind, thank you very much, so a happy ending is a wonderful thing to me! And romance…
OH BE STILL MY HEART.
I know it’s fiction, but I love, love, love a good romance. My Western cowboy series began with great emotion, a drop-dead-gorgeous handgun-carrying Latina house manager… who just happens to be a former Seattle detective. And she’s up against the quintessential prodigal, the son who stormed away, kicking the dust of his father’s super-successful ranch from his heading-to-the-city heels. But God’s timing intervenes and now that Colt is back home, things are changing at the Double S. And change isn’t always easy, is it?

Three sons, three broken hearts and wounded spirits, and now we’ve got Nick’s story to tell. And sometimes being the good son— the one who stayed home— is the hardest job of all. Trying to do everything right, all the time, can be self-defeating, and when the time comes to pick up the pieces, well… Sometimes even the best of cowboys needs a chance to be Home on the Range…

I want to thank Maureen for hosting me today, and wish all of you SO MUCH FUN on the Scavenger Hunt!!! Tippin’ my Resistol just a bit in your direction… And adding God’s blessings!
Ruthy
Here’s the Stop #26 Skinny:
You can order Ruthy’s books on Amazon, Barnes & Noble, CBD or at your local bookstore!
Clue to Write Down: diversion
Link to Stop #27, the Next Stop on the Loop: Click HERE
But wait! I echo Ruthy’s wish for fun on this Scavenger Hunt, and to add to it I’m offering a separate opportunity to win a gift from my heart. Quite some time ago, I came across an advertisement for a small, lovely perfume bottle. Immediately God brought to mind the verse from Psalms 56:8 about God keeping track of our sorrows and collecting our tears in a bottle. Obviously our tears are precious to Him! So I purchased a small, decorative bottle which I keep close to my writing desk to remind me that God cares enough to keep track of my tears.
If you sign up for my newsletter in the upper right corner of this page or visit my Author Page on Facebook, your name will be entered for a chance to win a “tear bottle”—a reminder that God is aware of all our days, both the happy and the sad. Enter this separate contest at the bottom of this post.

Along with the tear bottle, I’m offering a free ebook of the first of my Cranbury books, The Cranbury Papermaker . Same setting as The Cranbury Toymaker offered in the hunt, but an entirely independent romance!
If you’re already a subscriber to my newsletter, just let me know in a comment below and I’ll make sure your name is added to the random drawing. Thanks for participating!
Have a happy hunt!

Spiritual Retreat
Here’s what my quiet times often look like here at home: I sit down, open my Bible and perhaps a devotional, then start to pray. Sometimes I make it through my entire prayer without thinking about the laundry, or dishes that need to be done, or mail that needs to be sorted, bills to be paid, etc. Sometimes those thoughts don’t invade my mind until I’m into my reading.
Please tell me I’m not alone in this kind of scattered attention during my “quiet” time! It seems my mind is anything but quiet.
So when my friend Judy Knox invited me to a spiritual retreat she was putting together, I was interested. I was even more interested when learning it would take place not far from my home, in a seminary I already knew to be beautiful. I was aware they offered retreats, but I’d never checked into going on one until this perfect opportunity was given to me by my friend.
I talked it over with my husband, arranged care for my disabled son, then packed my bags with clothes and books suitable for the occasion and off I went! Everything fell so easily into place that I knew I was headed to the right place at the right time.
As you can see, the accommodations are straight out of a minimalist handbook. Exactly what I needed to keep distractions at bay! My first thought when my knees hit the floor to thank God for the opportunity was how many others had prayed in this room, how many others had sought a word from God just as I was doing.
I found the silence refreshing, so different from home where my son and I are often in a competition (albeit good-natured) to see who can make the most noise. God also blessed us with perfect weather to walk around the lovely lake, where I found it so natural to praise God for the many blessings He’s given us.
It might be easy for some to find this kind of solitude in their own quiet home, or to sneak away to a hotel for some alone time. I say whatever works! For me, enjoying a place that has been a hot spot for communication between man and God for so many years was a crucial part of my experience. St. Mary’s on the Lake is a Catholic seminary, but they offer self-directed retreats for those of different Christian denominations, like me. Between the chapel and the private rooms (including a private bath) and the lovely setting, it was truly a memorable experience that reminded me God really does want to spend uninterrupted time with me!
And I’m certain He wants to do that with you, too, no matter where you spend it.

Let the Buzz Begin!
I’m happy to announce that things are moving forward to purchase my newest novella, The Message in a Bottle Romance Collection, which will release on March 1st, 2017. Here’s our cover:
Each story is linked together by a bottle that survives the ages and, because of a single word etched into it, offers hope to various people when they need it most.
My story is set in New York City, 1798. Even then, New York was among the most exciting cities in the country to call home—although at this particular time, it was a risky place to be with a yellow fever epidemic breaking out. Let that be a clue as to why my characters are in need of divine hope!
I’ve so enjoyed working with the other lovely ladies involved in this very fun project! We have lots of excitement ahead as the release date draws nearer, but seeing the book available for pre-order is one of those first fun steps.
To pre-order, here are some helpful links:
As always,
Happy Reading!

Ready, Set, FREE!
With all of the Christmas decorations put away, it does seem a little late to be sending out a holiday greeting. But as I see it, January is the perfect time for a free read! The parties are over so we have more time, our pockets are empty now that we have to pay for all of the gifts we gave last month, and the weather is the kind that makes most of us want to curl up with a good book.
With all that in mind, let me introduce my winter sale:
My latest book, The Matchmaker’s Match which released last fall, is absolutely free today through Wednesday (free promo ends at midnight on January 13th).
Here’s a little about the story:
Can Mara win the love of a man she’s tried so hard to give to another?
Chicago, 1895
Mara Madison arrives at her sister’s doorstep after a decade of independent world travel. Having at last discovered the faith her family always modeled, she’s determined to make up for the years she’s spent indulging her own whims.
Her sister Christa instantly recognizes Mara as a potential bride for her husband’s business partner, Benjamin Esherwood. But Mara has pledged herself to perpetual spinsterhood and charity work since no proper mother-in-law would accept her adventurous past. She also suspects her sister’s family governess is already in love with the handsome businessman, and sets out to use her own matchmaking skills to bring the two together.
So begins the matchmaker’s match, a contest between the two sisters to see Benjamin happily married.
When her mother joins the matchmaking endeavor by arriving with Mara’s first love, Joshua, in tow, Mara’s resolve to remain a spinster is further challenged. Could the love that broke her heart and caused her to abandon society be reignited? Or should she surrender to her feelings for the man she’s been trying so hard to match to another?
Which sister will win the matchmaker’s match?
This story floated around in my head literally for years. It actually began while I was writing Bees In The Butterfly Garden, a 2012 release from Tyndale House. In that novel, a minor character kept popping up in my mind even after I typed the last page. She was the younger sister of a secondary character, certainly too young for her own romance along the lines I normally write. She was such a stinker I couldn’t help but imagine the trouble she’d face if she didn’t mend her mischievous ways.
Eventually I gave in to the temptation and started writing her story. But there were a few complications since it wouldn’t be an official sequel to a traditionally book published—so I changed the names. I let the character have the freedom not to be tied too much to the history as set up in ‘Bees’, and let it flow. The result is The Matchmaker’s Match—not exactly a sequel, but definitely inspired by a young character named Evie.
As it happens, in case you missed reading Bees In The Butterfly Garden, Tyndale is running a special promo on this book. Until the end of the month, the ebook version of Bees In The Butterfly Garden is only 99 cents! Now is definitely the time to see where Mara Madison the matchmaker came from.
I hope a free and nearly-free story will warm up your reading moments this winter. Happy Reading!
To purchase the Kindle version of The Matchmaker’s Match, click here. This title is free until midnight Wednesday, January 13th, 2016.
To purchase the Kindle version of Bees In The Butterfly Garden, click here. This title is 99 cents through the end of January, 2016. If you would like to purchase this title in another electronic form such as Kobo, Nook or Apple, click here and it will take you to the Tyndale sale page that offers multiple options. New Book News!
I’m so excited to share news about my latest book —
Introducing The Matchmaker’s Match!
This story was particularly fun, mainly because as I was writing this story, the heroine kept doing things that surprised me. I love it when the characters take over like that! It’s why I love writing, because I’m just the story’s first reader, discovering something that was there all along just waiting to be recorded.
Here’s what it’s all about:
Can Mara win the love of a man she’s tried so hard to give to another?
